Cosas culturales, Las propinas (slow speed)

Las propinas (slow speed) نصائح (سرعة بطيئة) Tips (slow speed) İpuçları (yavaş hız)

Whenever I have spoken with a friend who is dedicated to tourism, there is a widespread rumor that says that American tourists always leave very good tips.

I took for granted that the reason should be that, in general, it is a rich country, with a higher standard of living, so to change, Spain should be cheap. However, as a result of my trip to New York and my interest in American culture, today I have quite a different idea of the reason for the generous tips of American tourists.

The reason for this is that in the United States there is an obligation to leave between 10 and 20% tip in restaurants, with 15% being very common. And said obligation because, although it is not written, if you do not leave a tip or leave less than 10%, almost certainly they ask you if there has been any problem or if you have not liked the food. Esto es impensable aquí en España. This is unthinkable here in Spain.

It is one of those cultural subtleties that differ so much from one country to another. In Spain, of course, tips are also left, but there is no obligation. Si quieres, dejas propina, y si no, no la dejas, y nadie te dirá nada. If you want, you leave a tip, and if not, do not leave it, and nobody will tell you anything. Some waiter may look at you a bit, but he will not tell you anything. The other difference is that there is no social rule on the amount of the tip, but in any case, the amount is never high, 1 or 2 euros, depending on what is consumed.

Maybe something more if it is a group dinner, but also less than 1 euro if you have only taken something light. In case of consuming little, it is usually rounded. That is, if you drink a beer and a sandwich and it costs you, for example, € 5.80, you usually leave € 6 and you're done. But what is unthinkable is that someone leave a 15 or 20% tip in a restaurant.

Let's say for example a dinner for two that goes up to € 60. 15% would be € 9 and 20% would be € 12! It is simply unthinkable for a Spaniard to leave that amount of tip. I would not like to create enemies among the restoration guild, but if you come to Spain and have dinner at a restaurant and the bill goes up to € 60, leaving 2 or 3 euros for a tip here is more than enough.
