ZAIDA ¿Dioses?... Hay uno solo... hay un dios.

JOSÉ Pero, ¿cómo dices eso, muchacha? ¿Tú no has oído que hay Padre, hay Hijo y hay Espíritu Santo?

ZAIDA Verdad, ¿no? Entonces, serán tres.

JOSÉ ¿En qué quedamos, tres o uno?

ZAIDA Bueno...

JOSÉ ¿Tres o uno?

ZAIDA Dejémoslo en dos, ¿le parece?

JOSÉ Este diálogo lo escuché en Tamayo, un pueblo muy pobre de República Dominicana. Zaida se llamaba la muchacha. Era bonita, medio haitiana, y siempre tenía hambre.

JOSÉ Ese día comprendí lo que cantaba Atahualpa Yupanqui:

[ SI HAY UNA COSA EN LA TIERRA MÁS IMPORTANTE QUE DIOS ES QUE NADIE ESCUPA SANGRE PÁ QUE OTRO VIVA MEJOR. ]

JOSÉ Ven acá, muchacha, que te quiero hacer una pregunta. JOSÉ Come here, girl, I want to ask you a question.

ZAIDA Pregunte usté. ZAIDA You ask.

JOSÉ A ver, dime y concéntrate bien. JOSÉ Let's see, tell me and focus well. ¿Cuántos dioses hay? How many gods are there?

ZAIDA ¿Dioses?... ZAIDA Gods...? Hay uno solo... hay un dios. There is only one... there is one god.

JOSÉ Este diálogo lo escuché en Tamayo, un pueblo muy pobre de República Dominicana. JOSÉ This dialogue was heard in Tamayo, a very poor town in the Dominican Republic. Zaida se llamaba la muchacha. Zaida was called the girl. Era bonita, medio haitiana, y siempre tenía hambre. She was pretty, half Haitian, and always hungry.

JOSÉ Ese día comprendí lo que cantaba Atahualpa Yupanqui: JOSÉ That day I understood what Atahualpa Yupanqui sang:
