NARRADORA Al-Mamun, conocido Califa de Bagdad, poseía un hermoso caballo.

Tan hermoso, que el jefe de una tribu vecina llamado Omah se antojó del animal.

OMAH Me gusta tu caballo, Califa Al-Mamun. Véndemelo.

CALIFA No, gracias, amigo. No quiero venderlo. Este animal es como un hijo para mí.

OMAH Te doy una caravana de camellos a cambio del caballo. Me gusta, lo quiero para mí.

CALIFA Pues lamento entristecerte, amigo, pero el animal no tiene precio. ¡Arre, caballo, vamos!

OMAH (PARA SÍ) Ya vas a ver, gran Califa, ya vas a ver quién se queda con el caballito...

NARRADORA Y sucedió que el envidioso Omah planeó una treta contra el Califa Al- Mamun. Sabiendo que éste solía pasear con su caballo por la ruta que sale de Bagdad hacia el oriente, Omah se disfrazó de mendigo y se tendió junto al camino.

OMAH (2 P) ¡Piedad para este pobre mendigo!... ¡Piedad!

CALIFA ¿Qué te pasa, amigo? ¿Quién eres? ¿Te han asaltado los ladrones?

OMAH ¡Estoy muy enfermo!... ¡Y nadie se compadece de mí!

CALIFA ¡Ven, sube!... Te llevaré a donde te puedan curar...

OMAH Oh, buen hombre, estoy tan débil que ni eso puedo... Llevo días aquí postrado y no tengo fuerzas ni para levantarme y subir a tu caballo...

NARRADORA El Califa bajó, se acercó al falso mendigo, lo alzó del suelo con cuidado...

NARRADORA ... y lo montó en su caballo.

NARRADORA Y cuando iba a montar él en la grupa, se llevó la sorpresa.

CALIFA ¿Qué te pasa, amigo...?

OMAH (RISOTADA) ¡Caíste en la trampa, Califa tonto!... ¿No me reconoces?... Soy Omah, a quien no quisiste vender el caballo... ¡Adiós!

CALIFA (GRITA) ¡Espera!... ¡Detente!

OMAH (DE LEJOS) ¿Qué quieres ahora?

CALIFA Está bien, me has robado el caballo... Ahora sólo tengo una cosa que pedirte.

OMAH ¿Qué quieres? ¿De qué se trata?

CALIFA Por Alá, una cosa te pido que no podrás negarme. No cuentes a nadie cómo te hiciste con el caballo. ¿Lo prometes?

OMAH ¿Para que no se rían de ti?

CALIFA No, nada de eso. Porque quizás... quizás un día haya un hombre realmente enfermo tendido junto al camino. Si la gente se entera de tu engaño, pasarán de largo y no le prestarán ayuda.
