Bienvenidos a un nuevo episodio de Trotamundos del Español de ProfeDeELE.

Me llamo Marco y soy el presentador de este programa.

En este episodio vamos a visitar Costa Rica, un país ubicado en Centroamérica con acceso

al océano Pacífico y al océano Atlántico.

De hecho, vamos a visitar ambas costas para conocer qué nos ofrece este hermoso lugar.

Antes de comenzar, me gustaría hacerte dos preguntas sobre las que te pido reflexionar

antes de escuchar este episodio:

Con el nombre Costa Rica, ¿cómo te imaginas este país?

¿Cuáles crees que son las similitudes y diferencias entre la costa Pacífico y la

costa Caribe en Costa Rica?

¿Están listos?

Me encuentro hoy en Limón, Costa Rica.

Una provincia situada en la parte oriental del país, en la costa Caribe.

Un sector de clima cálido y húmedo.

Para comenzar mi recorrido estoy en el parque Vargas, un lugar ubicado frente a la municipalidad

de Limón, con vista al mar, lleno de palmeras y con algunas esculturas que adornan su interior.

Es una mañana tibia donde se siente el canto de los pájaros y perfecta para empezar el

recorrido con energía.

🎵 [ambientación: pájaros tropicales]

Es acá donde me reúno con Arturo, un amigo costarricense con quien visitaremos las costas

y el interior del país.

Marco: Arturo, ¿qué tal?

¿Cómo va todo?

Arturo: Todo bien, Marco.

¡Pura vida!

Qué dicha.

Bienvenido a Costa Rica.

Marco: Pura vida, mi amigo.

Feliz de verte y conocer Costa Rica.

¡Uy!

Pero antes, tengo un hambre que me comería un elefante.

No he comido nada desde que llegué del aeropuerto esta mañana.

¿Qué me aconsejas?

Arturo: Bueno, por esta hora temprano vamos a una soda por algo rico para desayunar.

Marco: [repiración] No sé si una soda será suficiente, Arturo, más que algo líquido

quiero comida.

Arturo: No, no, no, Marco, aquí le decimos soda a unos restaurantes de comida tradicional

donde la gente vende sandwiches, comida caribeña, comida tradicional… y les decimos “sodas”.

Aquí cerca del parque está el mercado y también hay sodas cerca del parque donde

venden comida muy rica.

Sobre todo aquí con este clima caribeño y también con los sabores del Caribe.

Marco: ¡Ah!

Pensé que te referías a una bebida.

Vamos entonces a una soda.

[sonidos camino por la ciudad] 🎵

Marco: Y cuéntame, Arturo, ya que estamos aquí en la soda “El Patty” en Limón.

¿Cómo es la comida caribeña?

¿Cómo la describes?

Arturo: Aquí todo es intenso: los colores, la música, la gente, la cultura y la comida

no se desliga de esa forma de ser de la cultura afrocaribeña.

Entonces, los sabores son muy intensos.

Por ejemplo, aquí una vez vine y pedí un fresco de Jamaica y, es muy rico, pero le

ponen mucho jengibre.

También hay una bebida costarricense que se llama “agua de sapo” que es dulce de

caña limón y jengibre.

Es muy fuerte y aquí lo hacen picante.

Y también algo que le llaman “chile panameño” que es muy propio de aquí, se consume mucho

en el Caribe.

Entonces todo tiene picante.

Lo que vaya a pedir, yo le recomendaría un rico gallo pinto.

Marco: ¿Un gallo pinto?

No conozco un gallo pinto.

¿Qué es y qué lleva?

Arturo: El gallo pinto es nuestro desayuno por excelencia.

Resulta que lo que escuché es que nuestros abuelos o tatarabuelos trabajaban mucho en

el campo y ocupaban un desayuno muy fuerte en la mañana para ir a trabajar en el campo

porque tenían que cortar caña, sembrar, etcétera.

Entonces el pinto arroz blanco, frijol negro o rojo, se mezcla y esa combinación - esa

mezcla de sabores con salsas, condimentos, chile y ajo - se acompaña con algo.

Hay gente que desayuna pinto con cerdo, pinto con pollo…

aquí lo que podemos pedir es un pinto con lo que usted quiera comer y si quiere café,

café negro, y si quiere un refresco le recomendaría un agua de sapo.

Marco: Cuando me dijiste gallo pinto pensé en un plato con gallina.

Lo digo por el nombre, ¿no es así, no?

Arturo: No, no va a comer gallina.

Podría comer pinto con pollo, pero no, no, no… la verdad, nunca he escuchado la razón

o de dónde vendrá el nombre, pero sí decimos en Costa Rica comer un gallito.

Un gallito es como una tortilla con un picadillo, con una carne, entonces puede que esa expresión

de comer un gallito se convirtiera en el gallo pinto.

El arroz blanco se combina con frijol negro o rojo.

Entonces, para mí, ese pinto viene de pintar, que es que el arroz se pinta con el color

del frijol.

Marco: Bueno, ya entiendo.

Pidamos entonces un gallo pinto y un agua de sapo.

Marco: Y mientras disfrutamos de esta comida, cuéntame, Arturo, leí por ahí que a la

gente de Costa Rica le dicen los “ticos”.

¿Es verdad?

¿Y por qué?

Arturo: Si alguna vez nos han visto en los mundiales, todos los comentaristas hablan

de “los ticos, pura vida”.

Esas son dos frases que nos representan.

Resulta que nosotros tenemos un diminutivo para las palabras: deme un “poquitico”,

regáleme un momentico…

entonces cuando lo usamos muchísimo, la gente que no es de aquí termina escuchando solo

ese “tico” al final.

Entonces, nos lo pusieron como apodo, entonces nos dicen “ticos”.

No nos molesta, yo creo que a ningún costarricense nos molesta que nos digan “tico”.

De alguna manera nos representa y si alguien de otro país - como en el caso de usted que

está visitando hoy me dice “tico”- para mí está bien y me gusta sentirme representado

con esa palabra y por eso nos llaman “ticos”, los costarricenses.

Marco: ¿Y mencionaste “pura vida”?

¿Qué es eso?

Arturo: Yo no sé si los niños de Costa Rica la primera palabra que aprenden es mamá y

pura vida, porque se escucha y se usa para todo tipo de expresiones.

Es como una…

yo diría que es una muletilla que la incrustamos en cualquier expresión.

Yo puedo decir de sorpresa: “¡Pura vida!”; puedo hacer una pregunta: “¿Pura vida?”;

puedo decirle: “Marco, esta comida -cuando usted la huele - está pura vida”.

Entonces, la podemos agregar en cualquier espacio.

Saludamos y decimos: “Marco, ¿todo bien?

Pura vida”, “¿cómo está este clima?

Pura vida”, “¿Cómo está de salud?

Pura vida”, “¿cómo está la comida?

Pura vida”...

Entonces es una expresión que está muy pegada al costarricense y la decimos mucho y es parte

de nosotros.

Entonces, probablemente usted -estos días que va a estar aquí- se le vaya a pegar decir

para todo “pura vida”.

Costa Rica es pura vida.

Luego de disfrutar de una deliciosa comida caribeña, nos dirigimos al Parque Volcán

Arenal, que queda a aproximadamente tres horas y media en auto desde Limón en el noroeste

de Costa Rica.

El volcán que le da el nombre a este parque, el volcán Arenal, está situado en la provincia

de Alajuela, tiene 1.633 metros de altura y se caracteriza por su forma cónica casi

perfecta.

Este volcán está rodeado de un bosque tropical lluvioso que alberga una gran variedad de

flora y fauna.

De hecho, en Costa Rica se encuentra el 6% de diversidad biológica mundial.

Algo sorprendente si se considera que es un país de tan solo 51.000 kilómetros cuadrados.

Es decir 38 veces más pequeño que México.

Dentro de la flora encontramos guayabas silvestres, musgos y orquídeas; y respecto a su fauna,

hallamos monos, tucanes, perezosos y numerosos tipos de ranas, entre muchas otras especies

[ambientación sonidos de pasos en bosque / lluvia] 🎵

Marco: Arturo, ¿qué hace que este parque y este volcán sean tan importantes y tan

populares como destino turístico?

Arturo: Una de las cosas que más nos gusta de aquí es todo este camino que llegamos

desde Limón, que pasamos por Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, subimos las llanuras, y como

usted ve, se ve ese hermosísimo volcán arenal que es imponente.

Yo digo que es como un gigante que se levanta ahí y nos llama la atención incluso a nosotros

que somos de aquí.

Y usted ve la gente, ve este pueblo que está lleno de personas que vienen a pasear, locales

y extranjeros, porque es maravilloso.

Tenemos muchos volcanes, pero este volcán es imponente.

Marco: ¿Qué cosas le llaman la atención a la gente cuando visitan este lugar?

Arturo: Bueno, a la gente algo que le llama la atención mucho son las aguas termales.

Es como un jacuzzi natural.

Ríos o lagunas donde el agua viene calentada por el volcán.

Entonces, algunos creen que son como curativos o ayudan al estrés…pero bueno, es muy llamativo

entrar a un río o una laguna natural que esté con agua caliente por el volcán.

La verdad es que eso es uno de los destinos más apetecidos para cualquier semana de vacaciones,

ya sea fin de año, semana santa, las vacaciones de medio año de los estudiantes y escuelas…

les encanta venir aquí.

Es una zona que atrae mucho al turista local y al turista de afuera.

Marco:Y con tanta belleza y bosques, vegetación frondosa, volcanes.

lagos, ríos y balnearios, este debe ser un lugar muy visitado, ¿no?

Arturo: Claro, este es un lugar muy famoso por las fotografías de animales y aves y

la naturaleza y la biodiversidad que es grande.

Entonces, vienen muchos fotógrafos con grandes cámaras o personas que hacen avistamiento

de aves.

Y es bonito, es una forma de acercarse a la naturaleza y disfrutar de la naturaleza, tanto

- como decía antes - el local y el extranjero viene y disfruta.

Esa es la idea.

Y como usted ve aquí la gente en San Carlos lo trata a uno muy bien y eso es bonito.

Somos pura vida y nos gusta tratar bien al turista.

Por eso, vamos entonces al volcán.

Marco: ¡Eso, vamos al volcán!

Luego de caminar y hacer senderismo en el volcán Arenal, me dirijo a San José, la

capital del país, que queda a unos 80 kilómetros del volcán Arenal y está situada en el corazón

del país.

San José tiene una gran contraste con sus alrededores, ya que está rodeada de parques

naturales con una frondosa vegetación.

Por eso, desde acá es fácil pasar de estar en medio de la ciudad a ir a bosques naturales

maravillosos.

Al día siguiente, continúo con mi recorrido por el país para llegar al otro extremo:

la costa Pacífico.

Y así, me reúno con mi amigo Arturo en Puntarenas para así conocer esta parte del país.

Marco: Arturo, ayer estuvimos en la costa Caribe y hoy en la costa Pacífico, ¿cuáles

son los contrastes entre estas dos zonas del país?

Arturo: Pues, para mí el Caribe tiene color, ritmo, sabor…

Además, hay un montón de mezcla de culturas en el Caribe, entonces hay influencia indígena,

afrocostarricense y oriental y un montón.

Entonces, es una zona muy particular.

También es un lugar más tranquilo, la gente busca mucho el turismo rural o el culturismo.

Entonces, es como silenciosa, como que la gente busca paz.

En cambio, a este lado del Pacífico que estamos aquí en el puerto es más fiesta, hoteles,

restaurantes famosos…

Hay muchos parques nacionales, muchos eventos, vienen muchos artistas, gente famosa.

Entonces, toda la costa Pacífico, que es enorme, entonces a la gente le gusta mucho

venir aquí al puerto.

Normalmente la mayoría de la gente de Costa Rica vive en el centro de Costa Rica.

Entre Alajuela, Heredia, San José, y cuando quieren ir a la playa la gente dice: “Vamos

para el puerto”.

El puerto es Puntarenas.

Aquí llega mucho turista y hay playas y parques muy famosos.

Marco: Ya veo, por eso había escuchado que la costa Caribe mucha gente considera que

es más auténtica, pero la costa Pacífico está más desarrollada para el turismo y
