May: En una olla gigante.

Jim: En una… sí, en una olla. Y es como una sopa que puedes hacer galones de pozole para la gente en una olla bastante grande, ¿no?

May: Sí, la birria también es muy similar así. Es como una comida que se prepara en ollas gigantes y básicamente la puedes servir a toda la gente que invitas a la fiesta. Otra cosa bien común en una fiesta para niños es la ensalada de coditos.

Jim: ¿Qué son coditos?

May: Los creditos son como… la… la pasta que tiene forma de coditos.

Jim: Oh, ok. Sí, sí.

May: Entonces, se hace una ensalada que lleva queso amarillo, lleva jamón, lleva crema o mayonesa y… y es como una ensalada fría que la ventaja es que la puedes preparar el día antes, la pones en el refrigerador y ya está lista.

Jim: Sí.

May: De ese mismo modo también puedes hacer una ensalada de pollo, muy similar pero que lleva como el… el pollo desmenuzado, lleva papa, zanahoria, a veces le ponen coditos también, pero igual, la puedes preparar con crema o mayonesa, la dejas en el refrigerador y ya está lista para el próximo día de… el día de la fiesta.

Jim: Sí. Y para las bebidas pues, muchas veces vas a encontrar agua fresca. Vas a encontrar agua fresca en todos lados en México, no importa si es una fiesta o no, en los restaurantes siempre: agua fresca y refrescos.

May: Sí, estas dos son las bebidas más comunes en las fiestas de cumpleaños de niños en México. Y una de las cosas más importantes en una fiesta infantil en México es la piñata.

Jim: Sí. Estaba esperando esta parte porque yo creo que es una de las cosas más famosas de las fiestas de México.

May: Así es. Esto es algo que pues, ya también en Estados Unidos se utiliza mucho y en otros países también.

May: Pero en México… bueno, cualquier fiesta, cualquier celebración, casi siempre tiene una piñata y lo divertido de las piñatas es que las rellenamos de dulces, las amarramos con una soga que después pasamos como por un árbol o por un poste o algo así y hay alguien jalando la cuerda, moviendo la piñata para que los niños o los invitados a la fiesta le peguen a la piñata con un palo y los dulces salgan volando por todas partes.

Jim: Sí, sí. Me acuerdo que mi abuelo iba mucho a México y siempre regresaba con muchas cosas de México y para los niños traía piñatas y yo tenía una piñata un año para mi cumpleaños y pues sí, la amarró en un árbol, pero nunca aprendí cómo lo haces bien, ¿no? con… con la “soga” ¿dijiste?

May: Sí. Ajá.

Jim: Porque tiene que moverse, ¿no?

May: Claro.

Jim: Y si estás solo en un lugar, no lo estás haciendo como con la tradición, ¿no?

May: Sí. Sí, porque el chiste es que… pues, te van a vendar los ojos, primero. Después, vas a agarrar el palo de… con el que le vas a pegar y te van a hacer girar con el palo el número de años que cumples. Te van a hacer girar, por ejemplo, si cumples diez años hoy, te van a dar 10 vueltas con los ojos cerrados y te van a acercar a la piñata y te van a... sólo como a mover tus manos cerca de la piñata para que sientas en donde está. Y una vez que… que ya sabes en donde está, le empiezas a pegar mientras todos cantan la canción de la piñata.

Jim: Sí, es una parte bastante importante de la tradición de la piñata, que hay la canción y se mueve la piñata.

May: Sí. Entonces, tú estás ahí con los ojos vendados, tratando de pegarle a la piñata y la canción de la piñata dice:

May: Exacto. Entonces, después de que el niño del cumpleaños le pegó a la piñata, siguen desde el más pequeñito, hasta el más grande y normalmente... pues ya es más grande la destruye y ya todos los dulces salen volando.

May: Y yo me acuerdo que… bueno, las piñatas tradicionales se hacen como con un cántaro de barro, adentro. Entonces, eso es lo que contienen los dulces o lo que… sí, lo que detiene los dulces adentro de la piñata. Y a esa… a esa ollita de barro o a ese cántaro de barro se le pone toda la decoración afuera, pero al momento de quebrar la piñata, pues es bien peligroso porque… sí, yo me acuerdo estar en fiestas en las que cuando le pegas a la piñata y la piñata se rompe, los pedacitos de… de cántaro salen volando….

Jim: Es casi como vidrio, ¿no?

May: Sí. Y te llegan a lastimar. Es parte de la diversión.

Jim: Pero eso es tan mexicano, que… que haya un peligro con la fiesta. Porque pues, así son los mexicanos. No se preocupan* tanto sobre los peligros de…: “Oh, pero tal vez le* va a pegar a un niño…” O algo así, es como… pues así se hacen más fuertes, ¿no?

May: ¡Exacto! Nadie se ha muerto de un pedacito de… de cántaro en la cabeza. Jajajajaja.

Jim: Jajajajaja. Tal vez en el ojo sí, pero….

May: Pero no mueres.

May: Y pues, estaba bien lastimado. Entonces, todos los dulces se cayeron al piso y todos los niños corrimos a agarrar los dulces. Y me acuerdo que… o sea, había tantos niños, era como querer escalar una montaña de… de niños para agarrar dulces. Jajajaja.

Jim: Y los niños ahí, agarrando los dulces sin preocuparse.

No. Había muchos niños y después cuando todos pudimos agarrar los dulces, me acuerdo que mi primo estaba bien enojado porque a él le había caído la piñata en la cabeza y en el tiempo en el que lloró un poco y… y estaba ahí todo lastimado, pues los dulces ya se habían… ya se habían ido, ya todos habíamos agarrado los dulces. Entonces, se puso aún más triste.

Jim: ¡Ah, pobrecito!

May: Porque tenía un golpe en la cabeza y ningún dulce de su piñata.

Jim: Ah, qué feo. Qué feo.

May: Es parte de la vida. Y después de la piñata, llega el momento culminante de la fiesta:…

Jim: El pastel.

May: Así es. Entonces, ya cuando quebraron la piñata y todos los niños ya tienen algunos dulces. Todos se reúnen alrededor de la mesa en donde está el pastel, le ponen las velas al pastel, las prenden, y todos empiezan a cantar “las mañanitas”.

Jim: “Las Mañanitas”. Es un nombre curioso para mí, como no es “la canción de cumpleaños,” es “las mañanitas”.

May: Sí, porque esta canción normalmente o comúnmente se cantaba, yo creo antes, en la… súper en la mañana como... súper temprano en la mañana o… como justo después de las doce de la noche, ya como comenzando tu día de… de cumpleaños. Había gente que iba a tu casa y te cantaba “las mañanitas” como, la canción súper temprano de la mañana, no sé.

May: Y sigue la canción, pero es la canción de... del cumpleaños, básicamente, en español o en México, al menos. Y… a veces la cambian un poquito, a veces no dicen: “Hoy por ser tu cumpleaños…” a veces dicen: “Hoy por ser día de tu santo”.

Jim: ¡Ah!

May: Pero hay personas que celebran su cumpleaños, pero también tienen como el día de su santo.

Jim: Ok.

May: Que es por ejemplo, si yo me llamara… no sé, ¿cuál es el nombre de un santo?

Jim: ¿María?

May: Pues sí. Si yo me llamara María, entonces celebraría mi cumpleaños, el ocho de agosto, pero también celebraría mi santo que es el día de las Marías.

Jim: Ok.

May: En realidad no sé si hay un día de las Marías.

Jim: Yo no sé nada de eso, pero… yo creo que muestra otra vez que cada celebración, en México al menos, tiene que ver con la Iglesia.

May: Sí, un poquitito de la religión ahí. Y bueno, ya que todos cantaron las mañanitas, el niño del cumpleaños le sopla a las velas, se apagan y entonces empiezan todos a entonar otra canción que es... la de la mordida. Jajajaja.

Jim: La mordida, sí. Yo aprendí sobre esta tradición en una fiesta de cumpleaños para adultos y pensé como…: “¡Qué interesante! Esto es un poco… único.” Como... toda la gente ya sabía lo que iba a pasar.

May: Sí. Sí, justo cuando apagas las velas del pastel, todos empiezan en un coro a decir: “Mordida, mordida…” hasta que la persona del cumpleaños le da una mordida al pastel. Normalmente en una fiesta para adultos no es tan como… agresivo. Jajajaja. Pero en una fiesta para niños, muchas veces las personas que están detrás del niño o… sí, los amigos del niño, le avientan la cara completamente adentro del pastel. Y es medio triste que la mayor parte del pastel a veces se desperdicia porque… pues, le pones toda la cabeza dentro del pastel, la cara, pero pues, es bien divertido también.

Jim: Sí. Es medio violento, ¿no?

May: Sí, un poco. Tengo recuerdos también de… en algún cumpleaños sentir que de verdad casi me ahogo porque tenía pastel que me estaba entrando por la nariz y por los ojos... Y sí, es feo. Es feo pero muy divertido para las personas que son invitadas a la fiesta.

Jim: Sí. Es la tradición, entonces cuando yo lo vi por primera vez no sabía si era como algo entre amigos, pero la segunda vez, lo vi otra vez y pensé como: “Ok, obviamente esta es una tradición de México”.

May: Sí, así es. Y bueno, ya después de que el niño se limpia la cara y todo… toman las fotos y todo, todos los niños de la fiesta normalmente se forman, justo ahí enfrente de la mesa del pastel, se corta el pastel, les dan su rebanada de pastel, les dan a veces algo como una gelatina o algo más, y una bolsita con dulces que normalmente llamamos “bolos”. Es una bolsita, a lo mejor decorada, que dice como “¡Felicidades!” o “¡Feliz cumpleaños!” Y adentro, pues está llena de dulces, a lo mejor galletitas o… sí, cositas así, como agradecimiento por haber venido a la fiesta.
