Șoseaua, panglică prăfuită, înainta prin albăstrimea zilei peste care soarele își cernea strălucirea. În urmă, verdeața unei păduri încingea cîmpul cu un brîu ce, prelungindu-se spre dreapta și spre stînga, se ștergea neîncetat mai mult și se sfîrșea prin a se topi de-o parte și de alta în zarea depărtărilor.

Dar marea de spice galbene era mîncată, pe locuri, de mici cîmpuri intrate în stăpînirea florilor de cicoare albastre, în a garofițelor pembè și în a mușățelului galben și alb.

Dar din preajma lor, ce pînă aci păruse pustie, o ceată de băiețandri ieși la iveală cît ai clipi din ochi, și se făcu roată împrejurul lor.

Copii ai cîmpului, piepturile li se arătau pîrlite de sub cămășile desfăcute; pulpele și picioarele le aveau goale. Apropiați cu totul de fire, ei duceau mintea spre timpurile dintîi ale Lațiului, ale samniților și sabinilor. Dar vreo doi, pistruiați, și cu un tort de aur roșu încurcat pe cap, păreau copii ale acelor triburi de iranieni care se credeau de-a dreptul coborîte din soare, și care-și făcuseră din Helios singurul Dumnezeu.

Drăgăstoși cum nu se poate mai mult, aceștia, cît și ceilalți, aduceau cu dînșii – inimi de aur prin grîul de aur – împăciuirea vieții cîmpenești, curățenia ei.

Dar soarele coborîse. Băiețașii alergaseră cu ulcioarele la un puț din apropiere, și veniseră cu apă de acolo. Drumeții băuseră, iar osia trăsurei fusese cu chiu cu vai proptită pe parul ce avea s-o sprijinească pînă la satul vecin.

Călătorii intraseră înăuntru. Caii o urniră din loc. Ei o tîrau cu greu, dar, în sfîrșit, o duceau. Micii țărani, precum și mai măriceii rămăseră în urmă și, în curînd, șira se departă și ea.

Tîrîș-grăpiș, călătorii ajunseră în sat, se deteră jos și mînară peste noapte acolo.

Dar aurul ce se șterse de pe holdele de grîu, odată cu asfințirea soarelui, nu se șterse din amintirea lor...

Și unul din ei măcină din grîul prin care trecuseră, și îl amestecă cu soarele dusei zile, ca să facă și din unul și din altul o pîine a neuitărei spre a se hrăni și alții cu ea...

În careta înhămată cu doisprezece cai de poștă, pe care îi mînă trei surugii, pe capră cu un soldat, se afla o doamnă, a cărei frumusețe era încă strălucitoare. Lîngă ea, un băiețandru, între treisprezece și paisprezece ani. Dar el părea a fi, după înfățisare, o fire bolnăvicioasă și care avea să șovăiască multă vreme între moarte și viață...

Mama lui, ea care îi purta o neîncetată grijă, se arăta însă, de rîndul acesta, coprinsă de o altă tulburare. Dînsa-i venea de la un petec de hîrtie cocoloșită, telegramă ce-i fusese trimisă, în chiar dimineața acelei zile, de o rudă a soțului ei, a cărui boală se îngreuiase.

Pleacă și nu mai așteapta – zisese din depărtare gîndul și condeiul celui care chibzuise telegrama; pleacă și nu mai așteapta transmisese fulgerarea electrică ce zguduise sîrma între București și Craiova.

Puține la număr, dar – coprinzătoare și grozave, aceste cuvinte, care învinețeau pe albeața hîrtiei, trecuseră pentru a douăzecea oară pe dinaintea vederei soției-mame. Și tot citindu-le, gînduri negre îi întunecau ochii. Soțul ei, își zicea dînsa, trebuia sa fie, în adevăr, cu totul în primejdie, de vreme ce fusese chemată cu atîta grabă. Iar fiece cuvînt îi trîmbița în auz de marșuri de înmormîntare. Uita că e cu copilul alături, și pe drum, și se credea în București, cu lume multă împrejur; își închipuia pînă și că vede ieșind din poarta Sărindarului dricul strălucitor de aurărie pe sub zăbranicul ce-l învelea, și ce avea să ducă pe soțul ei la locașul de pe urmă... Mii de soldați, cu puștile aplecate la pămînt îl urmau, iar pe lîngă dînșii ofițerii mergeau cu săbiile trase. Muzicele regimentelor ce se scurgeau răsunau în fruntea, în mijlocul și în coada cortegiului, lungi șiruri de soldați, sar pe trotuare, prin balcoane și pe la ferestre, lume din lume. După dric, trăsura domnească, decorațiuni pe sute de piepturi, - ministrii, ambasadorii, înalții demnitari ai statului... Dar... Ce?... Să fie cu putință? Soțul ei, omul cu care a trăit ea douăzeci și unu de ani, cu care a împărțit bune și rele, să fi murit în adevăr? Cu toate acestea nu-l lăsase sănătos, și în toată strălucirea falei lui militărești, nu mai tîrziu decît deunăzi – abia o lună de atunci – și acum – dintr-o dată totul să fie sfîrșit? Dar dacă ar fi așa, atunci ea n-are să-l revadă decît neînsuflețit – omorît? – căci nu încapea îndoială, un om ca dînsul, care ar fi fugit cu șapte în piept, nu se surpă usor – dintr-o dată și ca oricare... Nici vorbă, prin urmare, că îi vor fi mîncat capul – dușmanii! – avea atîția! – și nici vorbă că-l va regasi cu pete vinete și roșii pe obraz, cu părul capului și mustăților căzut – urme ale otravei ce-i va fi fost dată – căci: da – și nici nu putea sa fie astfel – aceasta era singura și adevărata boală pe care ea o bănuise de cum primise știrea..

Aceste gînduri porneau din altele... Viața ei toată se înălța din adîncimile trecutului, se oglindea cu voiciune pe geamurile aburite ale caretei, printre înserarea unei zile de pe la sfîrșitul lui septembrie. Și icoanele ce-o năuceau atunci era copilaria ei de fată singură la părinți bogați, visurile trandafirii și albastre cărora le dedese aripi, umplîndu-și cu ele viitorul. I se arăta, în sfîrșit, și alesul, - tînărul smuls din lună și din stele și care avea să-i fie tovaraș vieței sau, mai pe omenește vorbind, frumosul praporgic cu epolete de aur – feciorul de împărat din basm cu care se și cununa, puțin în urmă.

Rochia ei de mireasă – rochie de păpușă – atît de mică era la paisprezece ani – miră, în ziua nunței, pe toți. Dar ce miră și mai mult, era faptul că farmecul ce pusese stăpînire asupra ei nu ținu o zi, nici două, ci un șir întreg de zile, aproape un an – cînd – după cum trec toate – se risipi și trecu și el. Cu toate aceste, copila nu încetă să-l iubească, în ciuda dezamăgirilor. E drept că și el – deși nu scăpa un prilej s-o înșele – așa îi era firea – n-o iubea cu adevărat decît pe dînsa... Și părți din cariera lui i se redeșteptau în minte. Revedea luptele pentru cucerirea culmei – comandamentul suprem al armatei – spre care înaintase prin învățătură și sîrguință neîncetată; strămutările militărești dintr-un colț al țărei la celălalt; prea marea lui asprime, la cazarmă și în front; răzvrătirea companiei pe care o comanda, la Ocnele-Mari; ea azvîrlindu-se despletită, între cei care îl înconjuraseră, coperîndu-l cu corpul și ocrotindu-l cu inima, soție care striga soldaților turbați: "trageți!" și dinaintea căreia puștile scapă din mîini și în genunchi se pleacă; - izbinda lui – mai tîrziu – de-a întocmi o armată, scoțînd ca din pămînt regiment după regiment, instruind-o, traducînd din rusește și franțuzește regulamente; înființînd batalionul model, ce avea sa fie o pepinieră, stîrnind admirațiunea generalilor austriaci și ruși; Coronni, Halcinski și altii, iar acum, sub domnia cea nouă, o altă izbîndă a lui: putința ce avusese să adune, în tabăra de la Urceni, 50.000 de soldați din toate armele, bine instruiți, și bine echipați.

Înserarea ce se lăsa peste cîmp îi pătrundea în inimă. Lacrimile o podideau, cădeau cu picături largi pe hîrtia telegramei pe care o pusese pe genunchi... Dar careta bătea, în vremea aceasta, cîmpiile, ca un vîrtej... fugea, alerga, zbura pe drumuri aproape neumblate; se strecura printre hopuri, printre răsturnișuri; trecea pîrîurile și rîurile; cobora văile și urca dealurile, din aceeași fugă, din același zbor. Soldatul de pe capră moțăia, se apleca în dreapta, în stînga, visa cu mîna pe pușcă, la Tița, țigăncușa boierească în a cărei dragoste răzbise numai în ajun. Desculți, și călări pe deșelate, drăcoșii de surugii – niște băiețași – cu izmenele de pînză sumeșe mai sus de genunghi, cu piepturile goale ce le ieșeau din cămașile desfăcute, băgau roibii și murgii în năbădai. Ei hăiau, mînau, înjurau de ceara mă-sei, izbeau caii cu călcîiele, îi băteau cu pulpele arămii, ori îi plesneau cu sfîrcul bicelor. Bietele dobitoace, înhămate cu șleauri și cu frînghii, își bălăgăneau vijelios clopotele, și fugeau cît puteau, fugeau de mîncau pămîntul.

Cu cît se înopta însă, vîrtejul, în loc să se domolească, se ducea mai iute. Se ajungea la jumătățile pe poștă pe nerăsuflate, și alți cai erau aruncați în oiște. Aceștia – din porunca trimisă de la București la toate căpiteniile de poștă – prin ștafetă anume dusă de un olac – așteptau cu hamurile pe ei.

Alți surugii, tot atît de copilandrii dar tot atît de îndemînateci, cu cai proaspeți între picioare, spărgeau întunerecul cu hăirile lor din ce în ce mai sălbatice și se prăvăleau peste cîmpii ca o vijelie! Roțile sfîrîiau cu o așa repeziciune, încît – dacă ar fi fost ziuă – nu li s-ar fi văzut spițele. Careta se aplecă într-o parte și în alta; gemea din încheieturi, părea corabia primejduită pe care fiece val sta s-o înghită și ce se ridica deasupra fiecărui.

Înăuntru, copilul, văzînd că mama sa ațipise cu capul răzemat de căptușala caretei, își lipea fruntea de geam. El se uita în întunerecul înăbușitor, brăzdat lîngă portițe de fulgere galbene și roșii ale felinarelor, și încerca să ghicească priveliștele. Unde era vale, credea că e deal, își închipuia că vede ape mari... Însă trăsura se apropia de locuri păduroase. Copacii – răzleți sau mai mulți la un loc – se iveau, cînd la un geam, cînd la celălt, luau înfățișări de oameni – de hoți ascunși în noapte și cu pușca la ochi.

Uneori șuierăturile surugiilor sau vorbele lor îngînate de-a încălecare, erau socotite de el ca semnaluri... Îngrozit, își zicea că n-are să mai scape din acea noapte, și se trăgea de la geam. Ghemuindu-se, apoi, lîngă mama lui, încerca să adoarmă, dar zadarnic: ochii săi rămîneau deschiși mari asupra întunerecului. Răsuflarea îi era scurtată, urechile vîjiietoare, și fiori-fiori îl treceau prin inimă.
