În mijlocul apei albastre, ce curge cu solzi de aur și de smarald, cu pîlpîiri de soare pe fiece val, în firul ei, și dincolo de Nicopol, un pod plutitor stă locului – cine poate să știe de cînd? – prins de fundul Dunărei cu cele două funii căror li se detese drumu-năuntru avînd, la căpătîiele lor, grele unelte de fier ce se înfipseră adînc în nesip.

Scîndurile din care e făcut podul nu se văd. Peste ele a fost cărat și risipit pămînt pe care soarele l-a bătătorit, scoțînd din el, în urma încropitelor ploi ale primăverei, ierburi și buruieni, flori, și chiar mărăcinișuri ce crescuseră nalte și stufoase, și ce-l făceau să pară, de departe, un ostrov de verdeață.

Turcii stăpînesc încă vrăjitul țărm: Dintre împădurirea cu pomi roditori a dealurilor, se deosibesc, desprinzîndu-se și crescînd spre cer, albe și subțiri minarete. Grădini, ca cele din Halima, se prăvălesc de pe coaste spre țărmi, și pomii lor vin să-și spele picioarele în Dunăre. Ici-colo răsar, dintre desele tufișuri ale frunzelor, case albe, coperite cu olane roșii, și chioșcuri de lemn, cu geamuri portocalii și albastre, roșii și verzi, galbene.

O, turcii! Cum știau ei să prețuiască cele de Dumnezeu lăsate, și cum se foloseau de frumusețile lor ca să-și dezmierde traiul și să-i uite scîrba, suferințele, urîciunile și primejdiile! Și cum, pe tărîmurile pe care le-au coprins, știut-au ei să-și aleagă locurile satelor și oraselor ce au statornicit, cît și al caselor ce și-au clădit, și în care s-au așezat...

Bieții turci! Pe atunci țărmul drept al Dunărei era tot în stăpînirea lor, și, prin urmare, plin de poezie, așa că, dintre orașele de pe acest țărm, Nicopolul era, între prăpăstioasele lui dealuri, deopotrivă de îmbietor ca Grenada, în care Alhambra priveliște, de pe minunata-i culme, Generaliful ce zîmbește pe a lui.

Roata de pe plutirorul pod al lui Ali urmează însă să macine apa în sec, căci morarul care s-a dus la tîrg din ajun – fiind tocmai ramadanul – a uitat s-o oprească.

Doar o pînză de luntre albește sub stîncile Nicopolului. Pisica miorlăie fără veste și, ca și cum ar fi simțit întoarcerea stăpînului, se află în picioare, ducîndu-se spre marginea podului, de care și-agață ghearele.

Dar în opinteala cu descărcarea sacilor, unul din ei, mai greu, îl face să șovăiască. Luntrea, pe care el o legase cu frînghia de vechiul stejar al podului, îi fuge deodată de sub frînghia de vechiul stejar al podului, îi fuge deodată de sub piciorul cu care rămăsese într-însa, iar doborît se prăvălește în Dunăre, se duce adînc, și pisica ce i-a văzut căderea se apleacă peste valurile ce s-au reînchis asupra lui.

Pandele, sculat cu noaptea în cap, urma după puțin și, de pe scaunul pe care se așeza în pridvor, găurea negura, potopită încă asupra curței cu ochiul roșu al țigărei, sorbea cu privirile și cu toată făptura lui liniștea ce-l ocolea, se îmbăia în întunecimea de pe pămînt și în zarea nehotărîtă ce, revărsîndu-se, spălăcea un petec de cer.

Ca și cum ar fi voit să grăbească sosirea zilei, cocoșii turcești întovărășeau ieșirea afară a lui Pandele cu bătăi din aripi. Răpciugoasele lor trîmbițări spărgeau aerul. Erau fanfare de biruitoare bucurie ce vesteau răsărirea pe curînd a soarelui, și în care se amestecau cîrcîiri de găini gîlcevitoare, cloncăniri de cloști amorțite de o prea lungă ședere pe ouă îndărătnice. Dar Vergea nu apuca să bea cafeaua, ce i se aducea de Marghioala, dădaca pe ale cărei mîini crescuse de se făcuse de 35 de ani, că petecul de cer abia înălbit se schimba în brazdă gălbuie, iar întinderea văzduhului dinspre părțile răsăritului se înseila cu trandafiriu și se îmbrăca cu toate resfrîngerile zorilor.

Înecat încă de întuneric, orașul își lăbărța sub deal deșirările lui de uliți, urca spre înălțimile Pieței Teatrului, se cocoța pe Dealul-Spirei, pe urcușurile Mitropoliei, și curgea, de la apus la răsărit, cu aceeași năvală uriașă. Casă cu casă, și uliță cu uliță, Bucureștii păreau că se îmbrîncesc pentru a-și face loc să intre mai iute în lumina zilei. Unul după altul, felinarele se stingeau și, apropiind nălucă de nălucă, le amestecau într-un singur morman de negură pe care îl culcau peste Bucureștii mistuiți din fața pămîntului.

Dimineața lua însă în stăpînire marginea de capitală ce i se afla în drum, și albicioasa ei pîclă, străpunsă pe locuri de turnuri și clopotnițe, se împingea deasupra întunericului rărit. Desimea aburilor smulși pămîntului de apropierea ivirei soarelui se subția, lucrurile începeau să-și hotărască formele, și în cer pornea să curgă o Dunăre albă și nețărmurită; tot ce fusese întunerec se schimba în lumină; însuflețirea răsăritului se lăsa peste tot, tivea norii cu vișiniu, îi varga cu dungi roșii și, înflăcărînd adîncimile eclipticei soarelui, îi sufla cu aur.

Către fundurile curței, rămășița de spoegială înecăcioasă ce apăsa învelișurile unui lung șir de cotețe se zdruncina și, coborînd tot mai jos, se agăța de ghimpii scaieților sau se înghesuia de-a lungul gardului. Măturată, la urmă, de pe oriunde, ea era sorbită de proaspătul aer al dimineței, ce-și cîștiga albastra limpezime. Dintre geamurile casei, cele care priveau spre răsărit se sîngerau. Întîrziat în acea zi de somn, manifestările zgomotoase cu care păsărimea sa domestică îl primi, înconjurîndu-l cu alaiul ei, umplură inima lui Vergea de o adevărată bucurie. Nu se simțise niciodată mai fericit... Puici albe, pestrițe, galbene, porumbate, îi dau ocoale. Găini moțate, între care cîteva negre ca pana corbului, dar cu creste roșii, cîrcîiau împrejurul lui. Cocoșii de rînd, și cocoșii turcești, aceștia încălțați și golași; gîștele lățoase, cu ciocul ca fața morcovului, cu pene cîrlionțate; curcile negre-verzi și curcile pistruiate ori albe; curcanii cu răseli în gușe, mînioși pe roșul ce da foc cerului; claponii păunați cu verde închis, cu auriu, cu fața schimbăcioasă a gușei de porumbiel; rațele de casă și rațele leșești — se năpusteau de toate părțile, se înghesuiau. Sîsîirile și cutcurezările, măcăirile, cutcudăcirile găinilor, sculate de pe cuibare, turburară liniștea vecinătăței. Vergea, înconjurat de curcani și de cocoși, general în mijlocul statului său major, sub înviorarea adierilor, simțea, cu o nespusă mulțumire, fericirea din viața lui.

Dar paserile nu-și domoleau glasurile. Între ele se iveau certuri și imbrînceli ca să ajungă, care de care mai întîi, lîngă Vergea. Asaltați de găini, de gîște și de rațe, curcanii și cocoșii dau înapoi. Înlocuiți treptat, împrejurul stăpînului lor, de stratele mai de jos ale păsărimei, ei își înfoiau degeaba cozile... Luat la mijloc de năvala fără seamăn, și nemaiputînd s-o prididească, Pandele se bălăbănea, printre gîștele ce-l apucau de pantaloni sau printre puicele ce i se agățau de haine și cu care se pomenea, cînd în cîrcă și cînd pe umeri.

Ieșite din coteț, tocmai la o umbră, bibilicele umpleau zadarnic curtea cu strigătele lor de "păcat-păcat-păcat"... Ele nu mai găseau nimic. Puii, pirpirii și golași, călcați în picioare, scăpau cum puteau. Cloncănirile deznădăjduite ale cloștelor răsunau de luau auzul. Cocoșii se apucau, de cu dimineața, să încoțopenească puicele prin bălării. Una, tînără de tot, luată la scriveli de cel mai craidon, se codea. Pulberi diamantate se prăfuiau peste verdeața Cișmegiului și peste o parte a Bucureștilor. Crucile de pe biserici fulgerau. Geamurile de la sute de ferestre păreau plăci de topaz. Pe zidurile mai apropiate de curte și de casa lui Vergea, umbra tremurătoare a pomilor îndulcea albeața proaspătă a varului sau jigăreala zidurilor gălbuie. Din poartă, ulița înviată se da devale printre destrăbălările gardurilor ei. Spre dreapta, cele două-trei cîrciumi zidite în paiente și cam într-un peș, își dau obloanele de pereți.

Dar un trăsnet de lumină izbi coperișul unei clopotnițe vecine. El o înfășură cu o încolăcire veselă și, alunecînd spre vale, aprinse geamurile ferestrelor și felinarelor mai depărtate cu o spuză de schinteieri.

În curte, pasările sfîrșiseră să-și mănînce merticurile. Adunate la un loc, într-un așa de mare număr și de atîtea neamuri felurite, cele mai ales dintre ele — protipendarii curcani, păunii și capitolinele gîște, super-fainii claponi, cît și o mulțime de alți coconi și cocoane de viță bună, se revoltau, de altminteri pe drept, de umilirea în care îi azvîrlise Pandele, silindu-le să-și dea cotul cu mojici și mojice, cu găini de rînd și cocoși de sate, mitocani și mitocance sau nagode și pocituri care le făceau zile fripte și care se înmulțeau împrejurul lor, azi cu una, mîine cu zece.
