A canção do africano
the song of the african
Lá na úmida senzala,
There in the humid slave quarters,
Sentado na estreita sala,
Sitting in the narrow room,
Junto ao braseiro, no chão,
By the brazier, on the floor,
Entoa o escravo o seu canto,
The slave sings his song,
E ao cantar correm-lhe em pranto
And when singing, they run to tears
Saudades do seu torrão ...
Miss your turd...
De um lado, uma negra escrava
On one side, a black slave
Os olhos no filho crava,
The eyes on the son stare,
Que tem no colo a embalar...
What's on your lap to pack...
E à meia voz lá responde
And in a low voice there he answers
Ao canto, e o filhinho esconde,
In the corner, and the little boy hides,
Talvez pra não o escutar!
Maybe not to hear it!
"Minha terra é lá bem longe,
"My land is far away,
Das bandas de onde o sol vem;
From the bands where the sun comes from;
Esta terra é mais bonita,
This land is more beautiful,
Mas à outra eu quero bem!
But the other one I love!
"0 sol faz lá tudo em fogo,
"The sun makes everything there in fire,
Faz em brasa toda a areia;
It makes all the sand ablaze;
Ninguém sabe como é belo
Nobody knows how beautiful
Ver de tarde a papa-ceia!
See the supper in the afternoon!
Aquelas terras tão grandes,
Those lands so big,
Tão compridas como o mar,
As long as the sea,
Com suas poucas palmeiras
With its few palm trees
Dão vontade de pensar ...
Makes you want to think...
"Lá todos vivem felizes,
"There everyone lives happily,
Todos dançam no terreiro;
Everyone dances in the terreiro;
A gente lá não se vende
We don't sell there
Como aqui, só por dinheiro".
Like here, just for money."
O escravo calou a fala,
The slave was silent,
Porque na úmida sala
'Cause in the damp room
O fogo estava a apagar;
The fire was going out;
E a escrava acabou seu canto,
And the slave ended her song,
Pra não acordar com o pranto
So as not to wake up with tears
O seu filhinho a sonhar!
Your little boy dreaming!

O escravo então foi deitar-se,
The slave then went to bed,
Pois tinha de levantar-se
Well, I had to get up.
Bem antes do sol nascer,
Well before the sun comes up,
E se tardasse, coitado,
And if it took too long, poor thing,
Teria de ser surrado,
would have to be beaten,
Pois bastava escravo ser.
For it was enough to be a slave.
E a cativa desgraçada
And the unfortunate captive
Deita seu filho, calada,
Lay down your son, silent,
E põe-se triste a beijá-lo,
And she starts to kiss him sadly,
Talvez temendo que o dono
Perhaps fearing that the owner
Não viesse, em meio do sono,
Did not come, in the midst of sleep,
De seus braços arrancá-lo!
From your arms snatch it!
