Escondida no microverso ao seu redor, há uma guerra impiedosa sendo travada

pelos verdadeiros governantes deste planeta: os micro-organismos. Amebas, protistas, bactérias,

arqueas e fungos competem por recursos e espaço. Além deles, há os estranhos horrores que são

os vírus, que caçam todos os outros. Mesmo não vivos, eles são os menores,

mais abundantes e mortais seres da Terra, matando trilhões de outros seres todos os dias.

Eles não estão interessados em recursos, mas apenas em coisas

vivas para dominar. Ou assim pensávamos. Acontece que existem vírus gigantes que

confundem a linha entre a vida e a morte – e outros vírus que os caçam.

Consideravelmente menores do que células ou mesmo bactérias, os vírus são nada além de um invólucro,

um pouco de material genético e algumas proteínas. Sem metabolismo, sem nenhuma forma de propulsão,

sem nenhuma vontade ou ambição. Eles flutuam sem rumo e esperam achar uma

vítima para infectar e, assim, assumir o controle. Os vírus são tão simples que não sabemos se devem

ser considerados seres vivos ou não. Alguns cientistas argumentam

que os vírus estão vivos. Outros acham que as células infectadas por

de certa complexidade se aproxima mais de material morto do que de um organismo vivo.

Mas os megavírus podem ter centenas ou mesmo milhares de genes, tornando tênue a linha

que separa coisas vivas e mortas. E não é só a quantidade de genes

que é especial, mas também o que eles fazem. Pensávamos que os genes virais eram instruções

muito simples, apenas suficientes para burlar a defesa de suas vítimas e criar novos vírus.

Mas muitos genes de megavírus são completamente únicos, basicamente são genes misteriosos. E ainda

mais confuso: uma enorme porção desses genes é realmente característica dos seres vivos.

Genes que regulam a ingestão de nutrientes, a produção de energia, a captação de luz,

a replicação ou são fundamentais para manter as células vivas.

Estudos recentes sugeriram que alguns megavírus com genomas muito complexos podem ser capazes

de manter um nível básico de metabolismo por conta própria, o que, se for verdade,

abalará ainda mais o que pensávamos dos vírus. Ainda não sabemos nada com certeza, mas uma teoria

sobre os genes dos megavírus é que eles podem alterar fundamentalmente a fisiologia e a evolução

de suas vítimas, integrando seus próprios genomas e fundindo-se com eles em organismos quiméricos.
