Ludzkość, wulkany i efekt cieplarniany
Der Mensch, die Vulkane und der Treibhauseffekt
Humanity, volcanoes and the greenhouse effect
About a year ago, a very suggestive picture was circulated on the web comparing the annual carbon dioxide emissions of all mankind with the eruption of a single volcano.
The information he conveyed - that humanity is a piece of cake at volcanoes - was interesting, memorable… and completely false.
What does carbon dioxide emissions look like and is humanity really sick?
O tym 23. odcinek Świata w trzy minuty.
About this, the 23rd episode of the World in three minutes.
Zapraszam!
Invite!
W skrócie: W ostatnich dniach dwa wybuchy wulkanów: Etna (Sycylia, Włochy) i Sinabung (Sumatra, Indonezja) wysokość słupa dymu nad wulkanem nic nie mówi o emisji dwutlenku węgla – ten jest przezroczysty.
In short: Two volcanic eruptions in recent days: Mount Etna (Sicily, Italy) and Sinabung (Sumatra, Indonesia), the height of the smoke column above the volcano says nothing about carbon dioxide emissions - this one is transparent.
Za to dym ładnie wygląda w telewizji.
But the smoke looks nice on TV.
gases are released not only during volcanic eruptions; they can also seep through the ground or come out through hydrothermal vents; carbon dioxide emissions can be measured manually (people in silver overalls going down to the volcano) - point and episodic measurement; we can also measure automatically - with special devices left on the volcanoes - these measure constantly, but also at points; you can examine the entire plume of gases coming out of the volcano - from a greater distance; here "natural" CO2 would disturb our measurement, so we check the proportion of sulfur dioxide (SO2) to CO2 in the volcano, and then - from a distance - measure the amount of SO2 and make the appropriate calculations; all volcanoes in the world emit even (in a pessimistic version) a quarter of a gigatonne of CO2 annually; people in 2014 produced 36 gigatonnes of CO2.
Głównie spalając węgiel, ropę i produkując cement; Eyjafjallajökull w czasie erupcji (2010) wypuszczał do atmosfery nawet 150 tysięcy ton CO2 dziennie.
Mainly by burning coal, oil and producing cement; Eyjafjallajökull during the eruption (2010) released up to 150,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere per day.
Czyli 750 tysięcy ton w 5 dni.
That is 750,000 tons in 5 days.
At the same time, passenger aviation was grounded - thus reducing the emission of "human" CO2 by 1.3-2.8 million tons.
