Evangelium secundum Ioannem, Caput 10

Caput 10

17 Propterea me diligit Pater : quia ego pono animam meam, ut iterum sumam eam. 18 Nemo tollit eam a me : sed ego pono eam a meipso, et potestatem habeo ponendi eam, et potestatem habeo iterum sumendi eam. Hoc mandatum accepi a Patre meo.

1 Verily, verily, I say unto you: he that entereth not through the door into the fold of sheep, but cometh up from another place, is a thief and a thief.

2 But he who enters by the door is a shepherd of the sheep. 3 Huic ostiarius aperit, et oves vocem ejus audiunt, et proprias oves vocat nominatim, et educit eas. 3 To him the porter opens, and the sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name, and leads them out. 4 And when he has sent forth his own sheep, he goes before them: and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice. 5 But they do not follow a stranger, but flee from him, because they do not know the voice of strangers. 6 Jesus said this proverb to them: but they did not know what was being said to them. Although Jesus used this figure of speech, they did not realize what he was trying to tell them. 7 Dixit ergo eis iterum Jesus : Amen, amen dico vobis, quia ego sum ostium ovium. 7 So Jesus said again, "Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All as many as came are thieves and robbers, and the sheep did not hear them. All who came [before me] are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 Ego sum ostium. 9 I am the door. If any man enter in by me, he shall be saved: and he shall go in, and shall go out, and find pasture. 10 The thief does not come except to steal, kill, and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it more abundantly. 11 Ego sum pastor bonus. 11 I am a good shepherd. Bonus pastor animam suam dat pro ovibus suis. The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep. 12 A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them. 13 This is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep. 14 Ego sum pastor bonus : et cognosco meas, et cognoscunt me meæ. 14 I am a good shepherd: and I know mine, and mine know me. 15 Sicut novit me Pater, et ego agnosco Patrem : et animam meam pono pro ovibus meis. 15 As the Father knoweth me, and I know the Father: and I lay down my life for my sheep. 16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold: and I must bring them, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock and one shepherd. 17 Propterea me diligit Pater : quia ego pono animam meam, ut iterum sumam eam. 17 Therefore the Father loves me: because I lay down my life, that I may take it again. This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. 18 Nemo tollit eam a me : sed ego pono eam a meipso, et potestatem habeo ponendi eam, et potestatem habeo iterum sumendi eam. 18 No one takes it from me: but I lay it down from myself, and I have the power to lay it down, and I have the power to take it up again. Hoc mandatum accepi a Patre meo. I received this commandment from my Father. This command I have received from my Father.

19 Dissension arose again among the Jews because of these words. 20 Dicebant autem multi ex ipsis : Dæmonium habet, et insanit : quid eum auditis ? 20 And many of them said: He hath a demon, and is mad: why do you hear him? 21 Alii dicebant : Hæc verba non sunt dæmonium habentis : numquid dæmonium potest cæcorum oculos aperire ? 21 Others said: These words are not for those who have a demon: can a demon open the eyes of the blind? Others said, "These are not the words of one possessed; surely a demon cannot open the eyes of the blind, can he?

22 Now the feasts were made in Jerusalem, and it was winter. 23 Et ambulabat Jesus in templo, in porticu Salomonis. 23 And Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. 24 Circumdederunt ergo eum Judæi, et dicebant ei : Quousque animam nostram tollis ? 24 Then the Jews surrounded him and said to him: How long will you take our lives? So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, "How long are you going to keep us in suspense? si tu es Christus, dic nobis palam. if you are the Christ, tell us openly. 25 Jesus answered them: I speak to you, and you do not believe: the works that I do in the name of my Father, these bear witness about me: 26 but you do not believe, because you are not of my sheep. 27 Oves meæ vocem meam audiunt, et ego cognosco eas, et sequuntur me : 28 et ego vitam æternam do eis, et non peribunt in æternum, et non rapiet eas quisquam de manu mea. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 and I give them eternal life, and they shall not perish for ever, and no one shall snatch them out of my hand. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand. 29 What my Father has given me is greater than all: and no one can snatch it from the hand of my Father. 30 Ego et Pater unum sumus. 30 I and the Father are one.

31 The Jews again picked up rocks to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, "I have shown you many good works from my Father. For which of these are you trying to stone me?" 33 The Jews answered him, "We are not stoning you for a good work but for blasphemy. You, a man, are making yourself God." 34 Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your law, 'I said, "You are gods"'? 35 If it calls them gods to whom the word of God came, and scripture cannot be set aside, 36 Can you say that the one whom the Father has consecrated and sent into the world blasphemes because I said, 'I am the Son of God'? 37 If I do not perform my Father's works, do not believe me; 38 but if I perform them, even if you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may realize (and understand) that the Father is in me and I am in the Father." 39 (Then) they tried again to arrest him; but he escaped from their power. 40 He went back across the Jordan to the place where John first baptized, and there he remained. 41 Many came to him and said, "John performed no sign, 17 but everything John said about this man was true." 42 And many there began to believe in him. Et multi crediderunt in eum. And many believed in him.
