Evangelium secundum Ioannem, Caput 08

Caput 08

30 Hæc illo loquente, multi crediderunt in eum. 40 Nunc autem quæritis me interficere, hominem, qui veritatem vobis locutus sum, quam audivi a Deo : hoc Abraham non fecit. 41 Vos facitis opera patris vestri.

1 And Jesus went to the Mount of Olives: 2 and early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them.

3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought a woman caught in adultery: and they set her in the midst, 4 and said to him: Teacher, this woman has just been caught in adultery. 5 In lege autem Moyses mandavit nobis hujusmodi lapidare. 5 And in the law Moses commanded us to stone such things. Tu ergo quid dicis ? What do you say then? 6 And this they said, tempting him, that they might accuse him. Jesus autem inclinans se deorsum, digito scribebat in terra. Jesus, bending down, wrote on the ground with his finger. 7 So when they persisted in questioning him, he raised himself up and said to them: He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her. 8 Et iterum se inclinans, scribebat in terra. 8 And bending down again, he wrote on the ground. 9 And when they had heard, they went out one by one, beginning with the elders: and Jesus alone remained, and the woman standing in the midst. 10 Erigens autem se Jesus, dixit ei : Mulier, ubi sunt qui te accusabant ? 10 But Jesus, standing up, said to her: Woman, where are those who accused you? nemo te condemnavit ? 11 Quæ dixit : Nemo, Domine. 11 She said: No one, Lord. And Jesus said: Neither will I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying: I am the light of the world: he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. 13 Then the Pharisees said to him: You bear witness about yourself; Your testimony is not true. 14 Jesus answered and said to them: And if I bear witness of myself, my witness is true: for I know whence I came and whither I am going; but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 You judge according to the flesh: I do not judge anyone; 16 And if I judge, my judgment is true, because I am not alone: but I and he who sent me, the Father. 17 And it is written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true. 18 Ego sum qui testimonium perhibeo de meipso, et testimonium perhibet de me qui misit me, Pater. 18 I am the one who bears witness about myself, and he who sent me bears witness about me, Father. 19 Dicebant ergo ei : Ubi est Pater tuus ? 19 Then they said to him: Where is your Father? Respondit Jesus : Neque me scitis, neque Patrem meum : si me sciretis, forsitan et Patrem meum sciretis. Jesus answered: You neither know me nor my Father; if you knew me, perhaps you would also know my Father. 20 Hæc verba locutus est Jesus in gazophylacio, docens in templo : et nemo apprehendit eum, quia necdum venerat hora ejus. 20 Jesus spoke these words in the closet, teaching in the temple: and no one laid hold of him, because his hour had not yet come.

21 Dixit ergo iterum eis Jesus : Ego vado, et quæretis me, et in peccato vestro moriemini. 21 Then Jesus said to them again: I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sin. Quo ego vado, vos non potestis venire. Where I am going, you cannot come. 22 Dicebant ergo Judæi : Numquid interficiet semetipsum, quia dixit : Quo ego vado, vos non potestis venire ? 22 The Jews then said: Will he kill himself, because he said: Where I am going, you cannot come? 23 And he said to them: You are from below, I am from above. You are of this world, I am not of this world. 24 Then I said to you that you should die in your sins: for if you do not believe that I am he, you should die in your sins. 25 Dicebant ergo ei : Tu quis es ? 25 Then they said to him: Who are you? Jesus said to them: The beginning of which I am speaking to you. So they said to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "What I told you from the beginning. 26 I have much to say and judge about you; but he who sent me is true; and what I have heard from him, these things I speak in the world. I have much to say about you in condemnation. But the one who sent me is true, and what I heard from him I tell the world. 27 And they did not know that he called God his Father. 28 Dixit ergo eis Jesus : Cum exaltaveritis Filium hominis, tunc cognoscetis quia ego sum, et a meipso facio nihil, sed sicut docuit me Pater, hæc loquor : 29 et qui me misit, mecum est, et non reliquit me solum : quia ego quæ placita sunt ei, facio semper. 28 Jesus therefore said to them: When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you will know that I am, and I do nothing of myself; but as the Father taught me, I speak these things. I always do what is right for him. 28 So Jesus said (to them), "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM, and that I do nothing on my own, but I say only what the Father taught me. 29 The one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to him." 30 Hæc illo loquente, multi crediderunt in eum. 30 When he said these things, many believed in him. 31 Jesus therefore said to those who believed him, the Jews: If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. 31 Jesus then said to those Jews who believed in him, "If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." 33 Responderunt ei : Semen Abrahæ sumus, et nemini servivimus umquam : quomodo tu dicis : Liberi eritis ? 33 They answered him: We are the seed of Abraham, and we have never served anyone: how do you say: You will be free? 34 Respondit eis Jesus : Amen, amen dico vobis : quia omnis qui facit peccatum, servus est peccati. 34 Jesus answered them: Amen, amen I say to you: for everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35 But the servant does not remain in the house forever, but the son remains forever. 36 Si ergo vos filius liberaverit, vere liberi eritis. 36 If therefore the Son shall deliver you, ye shall be truly free. 36 So if a son frees you, then you will truly be free. 37 Scio quia filii Abrahæ estis : sed quæritis me interficere, quia sermo meus non capit in vobis. 37 I know that you are the children of Abraham: but you seek to kill me, because my word does not take hold in you. I know that you are descendants of Abraham. But you are trying to kill me because my word has no room among you. 38 Ego quod vidi apud Patrem meum, loquor : et vos quæ vidistis apud patrem vestrum, facitis. 38 I speak what I have seen with my Father: and you do what you have seen with your father. I tell you what I have seen in the Father's presence; then do what you have heard from the Father. 39 They answered and said to him: Abraham is our father. Dicit eis Jesus : Si filii Abrahæ estis, opera Abrahæ facite. Jesus said to them: If you are children of Abraham, do the works of Abraham. 40 Nunc autem quæritis me interficere, hominem, qui veritatem vobis locutus sum, quam audivi a Deo : hoc Abraham non fecit. 40 But now you seek to kill me, the man who told you the truth, which I heard from God: Abraham did not do this. 41 Vos facitis opera patris vestri. 41 Ye do the works of your father. They therefore said to him: We were not born of fornication: we have one father, God. 42 Dixit ergo eis Jesus : Si Deus pater vester esset, diligeretis utique et me ; ego enim ex Deo processi, et veni : neque enim a meipso veni, sed ille me misit. 42 Then Jesus said to them: If God were your father, you would certainly love me too; for I proceeded from God, and came: for I did not come of myself, but he sent me. 43 Quare loquelam meam non cognoscitis ? 43 Why do you not recognize my speech? Why do you not understand what I am saying? Quia non potestis audire sermonem meum. Because you cannot hear my speech. Because you cannot bear to hear my word. 44 You are of your father the devil: and you wish to do the desires of your father. You belong to your father the devil and you willingly carry out your father's desires Ille homicida erat ab initio, et in veritate non stetit : quia non est veritas in eo : cum loquitur mendacium, ex propriis loquitur, quia mendax est, et pater ejus. He was a murderer from the beginning, and did not stand in the truth: because there is no truth in him: when he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own, because he is a liar, and so is his father. 45 But if I tell the truth, you will not believe me. 46 Quis ex vobis arguet me de peccato ? 46 Which of you will accuse me of sin? si veritatem dico vobis, quare non creditis mihi ? if I tell you the truth, why do you not believe me? 47 Qui ex Deo est, verba Dei audit. 47 He who is of God hears the words of God. Therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.

48 Then the Jews answered and said to him: Do we not say well that you are a Samaritan and have a demon? 49 Jesus answered: I do not have a demon: but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. 50 But I do not seek my own glory: it is he will search and judge. 51 Amen, amen I say to you: if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death. 52 Then the Jews said: Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and so did the prophets; and you say: If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? et prophetæ mortui sunt. and the prophets are dead. Who do you make yourself? 54 Jesus answered: If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who glorifies me, whom you say is your God, 55 and you have not known him: but I know him. And if I say that I do not know him, I will be like you, a liar. But I know him, and I keep his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: he saw it, and was glad. 57 Then the Jews said to him: You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham? 58 Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM." 59 So they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid and went out of the temple area.
