1 Post hæc erat dies festus Judæorum, et ascendit Jesus Jerosolymam.
1 After this there was a Jewish festival, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
2 Now, there is in Jerusalem at the Sheep (Gate), a pool called in Hebrew Bethesda, with five porticoes.
3 In his jacebat multitudo magna languentium, cæcorum, claudorum, aridorum, exspectantium aquæ motum.
3 In these lay a great multitude of sick, blind, lame, withered, waiting for the movement of the water.
4 And the angel of the Lord went down at the second time into the pool, and the water was stirred.
Et qui prior descendisset in piscinam post motionem aquæ, sanus fiebat a quacumque detinebatur infirmitate.
And the first one who had gone down into the pool after the motion of the water was made whole from whatever infirmity he was incapacitated.
5 Now there was a certain man there thirty-eight years old in his infirmity.
6 But when Jesus saw him lying down, and knew that he had already had much time, he said to him: Do you want to be healed?
7 Respondit ei languidus : Domine, hominem non habeo, ut, cum turbata fuerit aqua, mittat me in piscinam : dum venio enim ego, alius ante me descendit.
The infirm man answered him: Lord, I have no man to cast me into the pool when the water is troubled: for while I am coming, another descends before me.
8 Jesus said to him: Get up, take up your mat and walk.
9 And immediately that man became well: and he took up his litter and walked.
Erat autem sabbatum in die illo.
Now it was the Sabbath on that day.
10 The Jews therefore said to him who had been healed: It is the Sabbath, it is not lawful for you to take up your litter.
11 Respondit eis : Qui me sanum fecit, ille mihi dixit : Tolle grabatum tuum et ambula.
12 They therefore asked him: Who is that man who said to you: Take up your litter and walk?
13 Is autem qui sanus fuerat effectus, nesciebat quis esset.
13 The man who was healed did not know who it was,
Jesus enim declinavit a turba constituta in loco.
for Jesus turned aside from the people who were stationed in the place.
14 Postea invenit eum Jesus in templo, et dixit illi : Ecce sanus factus es ; jam noli peccare, ne deterius tibi aliquid contingat.
14 Afterwards Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him: Behold, you have become well; do not sin now, lest something worse happen to you.
15 That man went and told the Jews that it was Jesus who made him whole.
16 Propterea persequebantur Judæi Jesum, quia hæc faciebat in sabbato.
16 Therefore the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he did these things on the Sabbath.
17 And Jesus answered them: My Father works until now, and I work.
18 Propterea ergo magis quærebant eum Judæi interficere : quia non solum solvebat sabbatum, sed et patrem suum dicebat Deum, æqualem se faciens Deo.
18 Therefore the Jews sought to kill him more: because he not only broke the Sabbath, but also called God his father, making himself equal to God.
Jesus therefore answered and said to them: 19 Amen, amen, I say to you: the Son can do nothing of himself, except what he sees the Father doing: for whatever he does, these things the Son also does in like manner.
For the Father loves the Son, and shows him all things which he himself does; and he will show him greater works than these, that you may be astonished.
21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives life, so also the Son gives life to whom He wills.
22 For the Father does not judge anyone, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 so that all may honor the Son as they honor the Father; He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.
24 Amen, amen dico vobis, quia qui verbum meum audit, et credit ei qui misit me, habet vitam æternam, et in judicium non venit, sed transiit a morte in vitam.
24 Amen, amen I say to you, because whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
25 Amen, amen I say to you, because the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God: and those who hear will live.
26 For just as the Father has life in himself, so he also gave the Son to have life in himself: 27 and he gave him the power to judge, because he is the Son of man.
28 Do not be surprised at this, because the hour is coming in which all those who are in the tombs will hear the voice of the Son of God: 29 and those who have done good will pass to the resurrection of life; but those who have done evil, to the resurrection of judgment.
30 Non possum ego a meipso facere quidquam.
30 I cannot do anything by myself.
As I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will, but the will of him who sent me.
31 If I testify of myself, my testimony is not true. 32 But there is another who testifies on my behalf, and I know that the testimony he gives on my behalf is true. 33 You sent emissaries to John, and he testified to the truth. 34 I do not accept testimony from a human being, but I say this so that you may be saved. 35 He was a burning and shining lamp, and for a while you were content to rejoice in his light. 36 But I have testimony greater than John's.
For the works which the Father hath given me that I may accomplish them: the very works which I do bear witness of me, because the Father sent me: 37 and he that sent me, the Father, himself bore witness of me: ye have never heard his voice, nor seen his appearance. :38 and you do not have his word abiding in you: because you do not believe him whom he sent. 39 Search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life: and they are the ones that bear witness about me :40 and you do not want to come to me that ye may have life. 41 I do not receive glory from men. 42 But I know you, because you do not have the love of God in you. 43 I came in the name of my Father, and you do not receive me; if another comes in his name, you will receive him. 44 How can you believe that you receive glory from one another, and do not seek the glory that is from God alone? 45 Do not think that I am going to accuse you before the Father: it is Moses who accuses you. in whom you hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, perhaps you would believe me too: for he wrote about me. 47 But if you do not believe his letters, how can you believe my words?
