28 1 Et cum evasissemus, tunc cognovimus quia Melita insula vocabatur. 28 1 And when we had escaped, we then learned that the island was called Melita. 28 1 Kaçtıktan sonra adanın adının Melita olduğunu öğrendik. Ama barbarlar bize küçük bir nezaket göstermediler. 2 Accensa enim pyra, reficiebant nos omnes propter imbrem qui imminebat, et frigus. 2 For the bonfire was kindled, and they refreshed us all because of the rain which threatened, and the cold. 3 Cum congregasset autem Paulus sarmentorum aliquantam multitudinem, et imposuisset super ignem, vipera a calore cum processisset, invasit manum ejus. 3 Now when Paulus had gathered together a considerable number of branches, and had placed them on the fire, a viper, proceeding from the heat, attacked his hand. 4 Ut vero viderunt barbari pendentem bestiam de manu ejus, ad invicem dicebant : Utique homicida est homo hic, qui cum evaserit de mari, ultio non sinit eum vivere. 4 When the barbarians saw the beast hanging from his hand, they said to one another: Surely this man is a murderer, who, when he escaped from the sea, does not allow him to live in revenge. 5 Et ille quidem excutiens bestiam in ignem, nihil mali passus est. 5 And indeed he, shaking the beast into the fire, suffered no harm. 6 At illi existimabant eum in tumorem convertendum, et subito casurum et mori. 6 But they thought that he would turn into a tumor, and that he would suddenly fall and die. Diu autem illis exspectantibus, et videntibus nihil mali in eo fieri, convertentes se, dicebant eum esse deum. But those who waited a long time, and saw that nothing bad was done in him, turned back and said that he was a god. 7 In locis autem illis erant prædia principis insulæ, nomine Publii, qui nos suscipiens, triduo benigne exhibuit. 7 And in those places were the possessions of the prince of the island, named Publius, who received us and showed us kindly for three days. 8 Contigit autem patrem Publii febribus et dysenteria vexatum jacere. 8 Now it happened that the father of Publius lay afflicted with fever and dysentery. Ad quem Paulus intravit : et cum orasset, et imposuisset ei manus, salvavit eum. To whom Paul entered: and when he had prayed and laid hands on him, he saved him. 9 Quo facto, omnes qui in insula habebant infirmitates, accedebant, et curabantur : 10 qui etiam multis honoribus nos honoraverunt, et navigantibus imposuerunt quæ necessaria erant. 9 When this was done, all those who had infirmities on the island came near and were cared for: 10 who also honored us with many honors, and imposed on the sailors what was necessary.

11 Post menses autem tres navigavimus in navi Alexandrina, quæ in insula hiemaverat, cui erat insigne Castorum. 11 And after three months we sailed in the Alexandrian ship, which had wintered in the island, which had the sign of the Castors. 12 Et cum venissemus Syracusam, mansimus ibi triduo. 12 And when we came to Syracuse, we stayed there three days. 13 Inde circumlegentes devenimus Rhegium : et post unum diem, flante austro, secunda die venimus Puteolos : 14 ubi inventis fratribus rogati sumus manere apud eos dies septem : et sic venimus Romam. 13 From there we returned to Rhegium, and after one day, blowing to the south, on the second day we came to Puteoli. 15 Et inde cum audissent fratres, occurrerunt nobis usque ad Appii forum, ac tres Tabernas. 15 And when the brethren had heard from thence, they met us as far as the forum of Appius, and three taverns. Quos cum vidisset Paulus, gratias agens Deo, accepit fiduciam. When Paul saw them, giving thanks to God, he took confidence. 16 Cum autem venissemus Romam, permissum est Paulo manere sibimet cum custodiente se milite. 16 And when we had come to Rome, Paul was permitted to remain by himself with a soldier guarding him.

17 Post tertium autem diem convocavit primos Judæorum. 17 And after the third day he called together the first of the Jews. Cumque convenissent, dicebat eis : Ego, viri fratres, nihil adversus plebem faciens, aut morem paternum, vinctus ab Jerosolymis traditus sum in manus Romanorum, 18 qui cum interrogationem de me habuissent, voluerunt me dimittere, eo quod nulla esset causa mortis in me. And when they had come together, he said to them: I, men and brothers, having done nothing against the people, or against my father's custom, was delivered from Jerusalem bound into the hands of the Romans, 18 who, when they had a question about me, wanted to release me, because there was no cause for death in me. 19 Contradicentibus autem Judæis, coactus sum appellare Cæsarem, non quasi gentem meam habens aliquid accusare. 19 But when the Jews contradicted me, I was forced to appeal to Caesar, not as if I had something to accuse my nation. 20 Propter hanc igitur causam rogavi vos videre, et alloqui. 20 For this reason, therefore, I asked to see you and to address you. Propter spem enim Israël catena hac circumdatus sum. Because of the hope of Israel I am surrounded by this chain. 21 At illi dixerunt ad eum : Nos neque litteras accepimus de te a Judæa, neque adveniens aliquis fratrum nuntiavit, aut locutus est quid de te malum. 21 But they said to him: We did not receive a letter about you from Judea, nor did anyone come and tell the brothers, or say something bad about you. 22 Rogamus autem a te audire quæ sentis : nam de secta hac notum est nobis quia ubique ei contradicitur. 22 Now we ask you to hear what you feel: for we know about this sect that it is contradicted everywhere. 23 Cum constituissent autem illi diem, venerunt ad eum in hospitium plurimi, quibus exponebat testificans regnum Dei, suadensque eis de Jesu ex lege Moysi et prophetis a mane usque ad vesperam. 23 And when they had appointed a day, they came to him in the hospitality of many, to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, and persuaded them of Jesus from the law of Moses and the prophets from morning till evening. 24 Et quidam credebant his quæ dicebantur : quidam vero non credebant. 24 And some believed what was said: but some did not believe. 25 Cumque invicem non essent consentientes, discedebant, dicente Paulo unum verbum : Quia bene Spiritus Sanctus locutus est per Isaiam prophetam ad patres nostros, 26 dicens : Vade ad populum istum, et dic ad eos : 25 And when they did not agree with each other, they departed, saying one word to Paul: Because the Holy Spirit spoke well through Isaiah the prophet to our fathers, 26 saying: Go to this people and say to them:

Aure audietis, et non intelligetis,

et videntes videbitis, et non perspicietis.

27 Incrassatum est enim cor populi hujus, 27 For the heart of this people is hardened,

et auribus graviter audierunt, and they heard with heavy ears,

et oculos suos compresserunt :

ne forte videant oculis, lest they should see with their eyes

et auribus audiant,

et corde intelligant, et convertantur, and let them understand with their hearts, and be converted

et sanem eos. and indeed them.

28 Notum ergo sit vobis, quoniam gentibus missum est hoc salutare Dei, et ipsi audient. 28 Let it be known to you, therefore, that this was sent to the Gentiles for the salvation of God, and they themselves will hear. 29 Et cum hæc dixisset, exierunt ab eo Judæi, multam habentes inter se quæstionem. 29 And when he had said this, the Jews went out from him, having many questions among themselves.

30 Mansit autem biennio toto in suo conducto : et suscipiebat omnes qui ingrediebantur ad eum, 31 prædicans regnum Dei, et docens quæ sunt de Domino Jesu Christo cum omni fiducia, sine prohibitione. 30 And he remained for two whole years in his employ: and received all who came to him, 31 preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching the things of the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, without prohibition.
