Actus Apostolorum (Acts of the Apostles), Acts 15

Acts 15

40 Paulus vero, electo Sila, profectus est, traditus gratiæ Dei a fratribus.

1 And some, coming down from Judea, taught the brethren: That unless you be circumcised, according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved. 2 Therefore, there having been no small rebellion against them by Paul and Barnabas, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and some others from among the others, should go up to the apostles and priests in Jerusalem on this question. 3 They therefore, being brought on their way by the church, passed through Phenicia and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy to all the brethren. 4 And when they came to Jerusalem, they were received by the church, and by the apostles and elders, announcing how much God had done with them. 5 And some of the heresies of the Pharisees rose up, who believed, saying that it was necessary to circumcise them, and also to command them to keep the law of Moses. 6 And the apostles and the elders came together to see about this word. 7 And when a great search had taken place, Peter rose up and said to them: Men, brothers, you know that from ancient times God chose among us that through my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the Gospel and believe. 8 And God, who knows the hearts, bore witness by giving them the Holy Spirit, as he did to us, 9 and made no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. Now then why are you tempting God to put a yoke on the necks of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we could bear? 11 but by the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we believe to be saved, just as they were. 12 And the whole multitude was silent: and they heard Barnabas and Paul recounting how many signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them.

13 Et postquam tacuerunt, respondit Jacobus, dicens : Viri fratres, audite me. 13 And when they were silent, James answered, saying: Men and brothers, listen to me. 14 Simon narravit quemadmodum primum Deus visitavit sumere ex gentibus populum nomini suo. 14 Simon told how God first visited to take people from the nations for his name. 15 Et huic concordant verba prophetarum : sicut scriptum est : 15 And the words of the prophets agree with this: as it is written:

16 Post hæc revertar, 16 After this I will return,

et reædificabo tabernaculum David quod decidit : and I will rebuild the tabernacle of David that has fallen:

et diruta ejus reædificabo, and I will rebuild its ruins

et erigam illud :

17 ut requirant ceteri hominum Dominum, 17 that other men may seek the Lord,

et omnes gentes super quas invocatum est nomen meum, and all the nations upon whom my name is called

dicit Dominus faciens hæc. says the Lord doing these things.

18 Notum a sæculo est Domino opus suum. 18 His work has been known to the Lord for ever.

19 For this reason I judge not to disturb those who are converted to God from among the Gentiles, 20 but to write to them to abstain from the contamination of images, and fornication, and strangled things, and blood. 21 For from ancient times Moses has in each state those who preach him in the synagogues, where he is read every Sabbath.

22 Then it pleased the apostles and the elders with the whole church to choose men from among them, and to send to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas: Judas, who was surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, the first men among the brothers: 23 writing by their hands: Apostles and elders brothers, to those who are Greetings to Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia, brothers from the nations. 24 Since we have heard that some of us, having gone out, have troubled you with words, overthrowing your souls, whom we did not command, 25 it pleased us to gather together and choose men together, and to send to you with our dearest Barnabas and Paul, 26 men who have given up their lives for the name of the Lord of our Jesus Christ 27 Misimus ergo Judam et Silam, qui et ipsi vobis verbis referent eadem. 27 We therefore sent Judas and Silas, who will report the same to you in words. 28 For it seemed to the Holy Spirit and to us to impose no more burdens on you than these necessary things: 29 that you abstain from things sacrificed to idols, and from blood, and from strangled things, and from fornication: from which you guard, you do well. Valete. Goodbye. 30 Illi ergo dimissi, descenderunt Antiochiam : et congregata multitudine tradiderunt epistolam. 30 They, therefore, being released, went down to Antioch, and having assembled a great number, delivered the letter. 31 Quam cum legissent, gavisi sunt super consolatione. 31 When they had read it, they rejoiced beyond consolation. 32 But Judas and Silas, and they themselves being prophets, comforted and strengthened the brethren with many words. 33 And when they had been there for some time, they were sent away in peace by the brethren to those who had sent them. 34 But Silas was seen to remain there: but Judas alone went to Jerusalem.

35 And Paul and Barnabas tarried in Antioch, teaching and evangelizing with many others the word of the Lord. 36 Post aliquot autem dies, dixit ad Barnabam Paulus : Revertentes visitemus fratres per universas civitates in quibus prædicavimus verbum Domini, quomodo se habeant. 36 After some days, Paul said to Barnabas: On our return, let us visit the brethren in all the cities where we preached the word of the Lord, how they are doing. 37 But Barnabas wanted to take with him also John, whose surname was Marcus. 38 But Paul besought him (that he who had departed from them from Pamphylia, and had not come with them to work) should not be received. 39 Now a dissension took place, so that they departed from each other, and Barnabas indeed, having taken Marcus, sailed to Cyprus.

40 Paulus vero, electo Sila, profectus est, traditus gratiæ Dei a fratribus. 40 But Paul, having chosen Silas, departed, being delivered up by the grace of God by his brethren. 41 And he traveled through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches: commanding them to keep the precepts of the Apostles and the elders.
