Gospel of Luke, Luc 05

Luc 05

3 Ascendens autem in unam navim, quæ erat Simonis, rogavit eum a terra reducere pusillum.

5 1 And it came to pass, when the multitudes rushed upon him to hear the word of God, and he stood by the pool of Gennesareth. 3 Ascendens autem in unam navim, quæ erat Simonis, rogavit eum a terra reducere pusillum. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him out a little. Et sedens docebat de navicula turbas. And he sat down and taught the multitudes about the boat.

9 For astonishment surrounded him, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had caught: 10 and likewise James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were companions of Simon. He said to Simon: Do not be afraid, from now on you will catch. 11 And having been brought to land in ships, leaving everything behind, they followed him.

12 And it came to pass, when he was in one of the cities, and behold a man full of leprosy, and seeing Jesus, and falling on his face, besought him, saying: Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. 13 Et extendens manum, tetigit eum dicens : Volo : mundare. Et confestim lepra discessit ab illo. And immediately the leprosy left him. 14 And he ordered him not to tell anyone: but, go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your purification, as Moses commanded, as a testimony to them. 15 And the talk of him went about more and more: and great multitudes gathered to hear, and to be cured of their infirmities. 16 Ipse autem secedebat in desertum, et orabat. 16 But he retired into the desert and prayed.

17 And it happened in one of the days, and he himself was sitting teaching. And there were Pharisees sitting, and teachers of the law, who had come from every town of Galilee, and Judea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was to heal them. 18 And behold, men were carrying on a bed a man who was paralyzed: and they sought to bring him in and place him before him. 19 And not finding on which side they should bring him in front of the crowd, they went up on the roof, and through the tiles they let him down with the bed into the middle before Jesus. 20 Quorum fidem ut vidit, dixit : Homo, remittuntur tibi peccata tua. 20 When he saw their faith, he said: Man, your sins are forgiven. 21 Et cœperunt cogitare scribæ et pharisæi, dicentes : Quis est hic, qui loquitur blasphemias ? 21 And the scribes and Pharisees began to think, saying: Who is this that speaketh blasphemies? quis potest dimittere peccata, nisi solus Deus ? Who can forgive sins but God alone? 22 Ut cognovit autem Jesus cogitationes eorum, respondens, dixit ad illos : Quid cogitatis in cordibus vestris ? 22 When Jesus knew their thoughts, answering, he said to them: What are you thinking in your hearts? 23 Quid est facilius dicere : Dimittuntur tibi peccata : an dicere : Surge, et ambula ? 23 Which is easier to say: Your sins are forgiven: or to say: Get up and walk? 24 Ut autem sciatis quia Filius hominis habet potestatem in terra dimittendi peccata, (ait paralytico) tibi dico, surge, tolle lectum tuum, et vade in domum tuam. 24 But that you may know that the Son of man has power on earth to forgive sins, (he said to the paralytic) I say to you, get up, take up your bed, and go to your house. 25 Et confestim consurgens coram illis, tulit lectum in quo jacebat : et abiit in domum suam, magnificans Deum. 25 And rising immediately before them, he took the bed in which he was lying: and went to his house, praising God. 26 Et stupor apprehendit omnes, et magnificabant Deum. 26 And astonishment seized them all, and they magnified God. And they were filled with fear, saying: Because we have seen wonderful things today.

27 Et post hæc exiit, et vidit publicanum nomine Levi, sedentem ad telonium, et ait illi : Sequere me. 27 And after this he went out, and saw a publican named Levi, sitting at the tax office, and said to him: Follow me. 28 Et relictis omnibus, surgens secutus est eum. 28 And leaving all, he arose and followed him. 29 And Levi gave him a great banquet in his house: and there was a great crowd of publicans and others who were reclining with them. 30 Et murmurabant pharisæi et scribæ eorum, dicentes ad discipulos ejus : Quare cum publicanis et peccatoribus manducatis et bibitis ? 30 And the Pharisees and their scribes grumbled, saying to his disciples: Why do you eat and drink with publicans and sinners? 31 And answering Jesus, he said to them: Those who are healthy do not need a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

33 At illi dixerunt ad eum : Quare discipuli Joannis jejunant frequenter, et obsecrationes faciunt, similiter et pharisæorum : tui autem edunt et bibunt ? 33 But they said to him: Why do the disciples of John fast frequently and make supplications, in the same way as the Pharisees: but yours eat and drink? 34 Quibus ipse ait : Numquid potestis filios sponsi, dum cum illis est sponsus, facere jejunare ? 34 To whom he said: Can you make the bridegroom's children fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 And the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them: then they will fast in those days. 36 Dicebat autem et similitudinem ad illos : Quia nemo commissuram a novo vestimento immittit in vestimentum vetus : alioquin et novum rumpit, et veteri non convenit commissura a novo. 36 And he said a similitude to them: Because no one puts a seam from a new garment into an old garment: otherwise the new also breaks, and the seam from the new does not fit the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old bottles: otherwise the new wine will break the bottles, and it will be spilled, and the bottles will perish: 38 but the new wine must be put into new bottles, and both are preserved. 39 And no one drinking the old, immediately wants the new: for he says: The old is better.
