Evangelium secundum Mattheum, Mat. 03

Mat. 03

Tunc dimisit eum.

1 In those days came John the Baptist preaching in the wilderness of 2 and saying, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven. 3 This is what is spoken by the prophet Isaiah: The voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord; His paths straight. 4 Now John wore clothing made of camel leather belt around his waist and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5 People came to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan 6 and were baptized by him in Jordan, confessing their sins. 7 Videns autem multos pharisæorum, et sadducæorum, venientes ad baptismum suum, dixit eis : Progenies viperarum, quis demonstravit vobis fugere a ventura ira ? 7 saw many of the Pharisees and the Sadducees come to his baptism to brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the anger? 8 Facite ergo fructum dignum pœnitentiæ. 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. 9 Do not think to yourselves, 'We have Abraham. Tell you that God is able from these stones to raise up children to. 10 Jam enim securis ad radicem arborum posita est. 10 and now to the root of the trees. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and burned. 11 Ego quidem baptizo vos in aqua in pœnitentiam : qui autem post me venturus est, fortior me est, cujus non sum dignus calceamenta portare : ipse vos baptizabit in Spiritu Sancto, et igni. 11 I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 whose fan is in his hand threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff with unquenchable fire.

13 Tunc venit Jesus a Galilæa in Jordanem ad Joannem, ut baptizaretur ab eo. 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 Joannes autem prohibebat eum, dicens : Ego a te debeo baptizari, et tu venis ad me ? 14 John tried to prevent him, 'I need to be immersed, and you come to me? 15 Respondens autem Jesus, dixit ei : Sine modo : sic enim decet nos implere omnem justitiam. 15 And Jesus said to him, this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. Tunc dimisit eum. 16 Baptizatus autem Jesus, confestim ascendit de aqua, et ecce aperti sunt ei cæli : et vidit Spiritum Dei descendentem sicut columbam, et venientem super se. 16 baptized, Jesus came up out of the water and the sky opened up and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. 17 and a voice from heaven said, 'This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well.
