Seulmi Lee: Hello~ viewers!
Seulmi: My name is Seulmi.
Yi: I'm currently living in Tokyo, Japan.
Seulmi Lee: I moved here two years ago.
Seulmi: So far, in the UK or Australia, etc.
Seulmi Lee: I have lived in other countries for a while.
Seulmi Lee: Born and raised in Korea, she is a complete Korean native.
Seulmi Lee: The fact that I lived after becoming an adult
Seulmi Lee: I think it's a bit unusual.
Seulmi Lee: My hobby is dancing
Seulmi Lee: Her specialty is remembering other people's birthdays,
Seulmi: And I'm a person who likes meeting people.
Seulmi Lee: Sujeongi and I are college classmates.
Seulmi Lee: I know all the history of my 20s.
Vickey Sam: Actually, my sister and I were really close in college.
Vickey Sam: My older sister has been really interested in Japan since college.
Vicky Sam: I remember that I was good at Japanese too.
Vickey Sam: I'm still doing well.
Vicky Sam: Then when did interest in Japan start?
Vickey Sam: Another reason I started learning Japanese in earnest
Big Key Sam: Since when?
Seulmi Lee: As you know from the beginning
Seulmi Lee: Because I was very interested in foreign languages.
Seulmi: Both of us
Seulmi Lee: That's why I've been learning English since I was little.
Seulmi Lee: I found it myself and studied it.
Seulmi Lee: As you know, through English
Seulmi Lee: There is another world you know now, right?
Seulmi Lee: I want to know more about that other world
Seulmi Lee: So if you study another foreign language
Seulmi Lee: I think there is another world
Seulmi Lee: I also want to study another foreign language.
Seulmi Lee: That's why my dad studied when I was in college.
Seulmi Lee: Japanese books and cassette tapes from the 70s and 80s
Seulmi: I was at home because of that
Seulmi Lee: I think I became interested in my first second foreign language.
Seulmi: Because there is some data
Seulmi: And then Arashi, I liked you.
Seulmi Lee: I used to do things like Arashi when I was a student.
Seulmi Lee: When I was in school, I saw
Seulmi Lee: I searched more deeply
Seulmi Lee: But honestly, I never really studied.
Seulmi Lee: That's why I grew the most
Seulmi Lee: It was while living abroad and playing with Japanese friends.
Seulmi Lee: I think it increased little by little that way.
Seulmi Lee: And now that I use it for work,
Dew: That. Formal business Japanese?
Yi: I think we've gotten a lot of these.
Vicky Sam: Then I'll give you a moment to show off your Japanese skills.
Vickey Sam: So, can I ask you to briefly introduce yourself in Japanese?
Seulmi: Yes. (laugh)
Seulmi: Hello, my name is Seulmi.
Isumi: Currently living in Tokyo and working on
Seulmi Lee: I changed my job two years ago.
Lee Seul-mi: Currently, the company is targeting overseas customers.
Seulmi Lee: I am doing a business day.
Seulmi Lee: I live abroad
Seulmi Lee: I like to experience something new.
Seulmi Lee: Please take good care of me.
Seulmi Lee: But it's not true if someone good at it hears it.
Bicky Sam: Then you can speak English too.
Bicky Sam: You can speak Japanese too.
Vicky Sam: Then I think you speak English better,
Seulmi Lee: Of course it's English.
Seulmi Lee: Because the time when I started learning was different.
Seulmi Lee: Age really doesn't seem to be ignored.
Seulmi Lee: So now I learned English from a very young age
Seulmi Lee: For content such as movies and TV shows
Seulmi Lee: Because I keep getting exposed
Seulmi Lee: Naturally, I continued to improve.
Seulmi Lee: Compared to English, Japanese doesn't have that many opportunities.
Seulmi Lee: I have to keep looking
Seulmi: And above all else now
Seulmi Lee: I started learning relatively late.
Seulmi Lee: It's not that late, but compared to English
Seulmi Lee: So it was my first time in middle school
Lee Seul-mi: It's a case that I increased while talking with my Japanese friends.
Dewy: Honestly, I'm starting to think that once I start living in Japan
Dewey: Just a month after becoming a native level
Dewey: Did you see this coming?
Yi Yun: But obviously, studying at a later age is not the same as
Yi: The learning curve is really different.
Dewey: That's why I speak a few other languages.
Yi: You can put those together and use
Dewey: If you rank the best of the bunch, you'll see that the
Dewy: In order of age of learning.
Dewmi: So English is obviously much better.
Vicky Sam: Actually, Japanese and Korean have similar word order.
Vicky Sam: You know what they say about Koreans being the best learners.
Vicky Sam: But do you think this is true?
Vicky Sam: Are there any specific parts of Japanese that you find difficult?
Dewey: Well, first of all, you're right.
Dewey: But that only really applies when you first start learning.
Dewy: For example, word order and
Dewy: There are so many similar words.
Dewey: That's a really important part of the language.
Dewey: It's just a small part of that vast area.
Yi: So there's an upside to this, but it's a little bit of a downside.
Dewey: There's no advantage to going beyond the basics.
Dewmi: So it's really only for beginners.
Yi: I think it's because there are a lot of similar words.
Yi: Because there are a lot of words that have the same word order.
Dewey: For example, now you can say "I study"
Dewy: In Japanese, it's just a word for word translation.
Dewey: I translate in my head.
Yi: Because the Chinese characters use the same word.
Yi Seul Mi: I'm just going to change my studies.
Dewy: By pronouncing the same kanji word differently.
Dewey: It's a little hard to explain,
Yi Yun: But the word study is weird here.
Dew: In Japan, it's called "Mingang".
Yi: So the word study is used in different ways.
Dewey: A little bit of "research"?
Drizzle: If all of a sudden it's used as a completely different word than
Dewey: All of a sudden, I have to rethink that in my head.
Dewy: Sometimes.
Dewmi: Because every word in English is different.
Yi: That's basically how we talk about it.
Yi: But Japanese usually sounds the same.
Dewey: Because sometimes it's just so suddenly different.
Dewey: So I need to do an activity.
Dewey: So I think that's one of the reasons why
Dewey: I think it's a little confusing at times.
Vicky Sam: I think I know what you mean.
Bicky Sam: If it's completely different, you can just memorize it like this,
Vicky Sam: It's either vaguely different or
VickySam: Uh, I think it's this one, but if it's not this one, it's a
Vicky Sam: I can see how that could be confusing.
Yi: I think that's why it's so confusing.
Vicky Sam: Let's move on to questions about living in Japan.
Vicky Sam: My sister lives in Japan right now.
Vicky Sam: What are you doing specifically?
Vicky Sam: How long do you plan to be around?
Dewey: Well, for now, do you know what an ad network is?
Dewey: If you're an IT company with an ad platform like that.
Drizzle: That ad was sent to an international client,
Dewey: I work in sales.
Yi: I was helping them scale in Japan.
Dewey: Specifically, you can now sell ads as well as
Yi Seul-mi: We also have an overall Japanese marketing strategy.
Dewey: I'm more of a consultant.
Yi Seulmi: When I first came to Japan, I was completely on the PR side.
Dewey: Now I'm going to do something else
Dewey: I wasn't very happy.
Dewey: Now we're going to do one job change, and then we're going to use the
Yi: Now I write English, I write marketing strategies.
Dewey: It's funny how this works out.
Yi: I know I want to keep working here.
Dewy: Honestly, the country is not Japan.
Dewey: I'd love to live in another country again.
Dewey: I'm happy with the work I'm doing.
Yi: First of all, for now, I will continue to live in Japan.
Vicky Sam: Actually, if I see a picture of you on social media or something.
Vickisam: I've seen you work so hard and have so much fun.
Vicky Sam: So I was like, "Let's find you a fun job that fits your personality.
Dewey: There's more to it than meets the eye. (laughs)
Vicky Sam: Absolutely, absolutely, absolutely.
Dewey: Only show the good side. (laughs)
Vicky Sam: But it does mean that overall satisfaction is high.
Vicky Sam: This might be a sensitive question.
Vicky Sam: We're actually working with Japan and
Vicky Sam: You know, Korea doesn't have the best political relations.
Vicky Sam: So at a time like this
Vicki Sam: Was there anything in particular that your sister had to deal with?
Vicky Sam: Between Korean and Japanese individuals, there's no way to use the
Vicky Sam: You don't think it has any effect?
Yi: Well, when I was living in Japan, I learned that
Dewey: I've never been uncomfortable with political issues.
Dewey: I've never had one.
Yi Yun: It's more like three years ago, when I had a really bad relationship.
Dewey: We're done sightseeing.
Dewey: There was one good thing about cheap airfare. (laughs)
Yi: When it comes to politics and life.
Dewmi: I tend to think of them as completely separate.
Dewey: Because the people who live there are good citizens,
Yi Seul Mi: Not only are we talking about Korea-Japan relations.
Dewey: It's also a global issue
Yi: It's all about the power of the top.
Yi Seul Mi: So now that the Korean people as a whole have gotten to know
Yi: It's true that there is a negative perception of Japanese people,
Dewey: Now, for historical reasons, the
Isumi: There is a negative mindset about Japan itself.
Dewey: That's totally possible.
Dewey: Reflecting this to individuals now is a matter of using the
Dewey: I think I'm wrong now.
Yi: And personally, as someone who lives in Japan.
Yi Seul Mi: Japan has been really into Korean culture lately.
Yi Seul Mi: If you go to Korea Town, it's really crazy,
Lee Seul Mi: Korean culture is really popular.
Dewey: Everyone is so welcoming and excited.
Dewey: So I've never felt that at all.
Vicky Sam: Because you speak Japanese.
VickySam: I think the Japanese will like it better.
Vicky Sam: Did you have some of those?
Yi Seul Mi: Uh, that's why you should just say it in Korean.
Yi Seul Mi: Then she said she wanted to hear Korean.
Vicky Sam: Oh, you want to practice your Korean?
Dewey: Yeah. It's really popular.
Vicky Sam: So, this might be a little bit of a big question,
Vicky Sam: In order for South Korea and Japan to improve their relationship.
Vicky Sam: What kind of efforts do you think are needed between countries or between individuals?
Dewey: Well, it's really hard.
Vicky Sam: That's right.
Dewey: Something is going to have to be done politically to get the support of their own people.
Dewey: The purpose of using history for politics is
Dewey: I think it's something that's been going on historically.
Dewey: I get the idea of what you're trying to do.
Dewey: That way, the position of the two countries is that the
Dewey: I think you can't match forever.
Dewey: Because he's going to keep saying he's right.
Dewey: So honestly, politically
Yi: It's really hard to look at it objectively.
Dewmi: I think we should get rid of that propaganda first.
Dewey: So this is going to be connected to this.
Dewey: Letting go of your personal bias against countries
Dewy: There's something about living in Japan that makes you look bad.
Dewey: But you don't curse at me for living in America.
Yi: I think that's a bias and it needs to go away.
Vicky Sam: And then finally
Vicky Sam: I also have people who are learning Japanese with me.
Vicky Sam: Is it possible to become fluent in both Korean and Japanese quickly?
Vicki Sam: Can you share some of your own tips?
Yi: We talked about this a little bit earlier.
Yi Seul Mi: Foreign language is a part of life
Drizzle: I feel like being exposed is the fastest.
Dewey: You can get a lot of free stuff.
Dewmi: It's a time when you can grow foreign languages with content.
Drizzle: I'm going to take advantage of this and constantly use the
Dewey: I think we can grow the language by exposing and iterating.
Dewy: Honestly, I'm not a big fan of anime.
Dewey: I don't really look at it.
Dewey: They recommended animation.
Yi Seul Mi: Because the voice actors are so clear in their pronunciation and
Yi: Because you can listen to it at the same time as the Japanese subtitles.
Dewey: They say it goes really fast.
Vicky Sam: There were some people who would light up the animation.
Vicky Sam: What do you think about this?
Vicky Sam: I'd rather watch more soap operas, vlogs, stuff like that.
Dewey: That sounds like a good idea.
Dewey: When we say that animations use different words, we mean that the
Yi: I think it depends on how you're aggregating it.
Yi: Because it's not just words that you don't use in everyday life.
Dewey: Overall, you're learning the language by looking at the content.
Dewey: So, honestly, seeing something that you like is a good thing.
Dewey: I think I'm the fastest growing.
Dewey: Because that's not how I watch anime.
Dewey: I wouldn't go that far,
Dewey: Everybody's talking about going fast now.
Yi Seul Mi: Because if you compare it to a drama.
Dewey: Because it's so clear.
Vicky Sam: So actually, whatever you're using, you're going to want to make sure that the
Vicky Sam: If you write something that's interesting to you.
Vicky Sam: It could actually be a book.
Vicky Sam: It could be drama, it could be music.
Vicky Sam: But thank you so much for the great answers so far.
Yi Yun: Yeah, you're always healthy, have fun.
VickySam: Yeah, thanks, bye!
