その 日 の 夕方 、葉子 は 船 に 来て から 始めて 食堂 に 出た 。 着物 は 思いきって 地味な くすんだ の を 選んだ けれども 、顔 だけ は 存分に 若く つくって いた 。 二十 を 越す や 越さ ず に 見える 、目 の 大きな 、沈んだ 表情 の 彼女 の 襟 の 藍鼠 は 、なんとなく 見る 人 の 心 を 痛く させた 。 細長い 食卓 の 一端 に 、カップ ・ボード を 後ろ にして 座 を 占めた 事務長 の 右手 に は 田川 夫人 が いて 、その 向かい が 田川 博士 、葉子 の 席 は 博士 の すぐ 隣 に 取って あった 。 そのほか の 船客 も 大概 は すでに 卓 に 向かって いた 。 葉子 の 足音 が 聞こえる と 、いち早く 目くばせ を し 合った の は ボーイ 仲間 で 、その 次に ひどく 落ち付かぬ 様子 を し出した のは 事務長 と 向かい合って 食卓 の 他 の 一端 に いた 鬚 の 白い アメリカ人 の 船長 であった 。 あわてて 席 を 立って 、右手 に ナプキン を 下げ ながら 、自分 の 前 を 葉子 に 通らせて 、顔 を まっ赤 に して 座 に 返った 。 葉子 は しとやかに 人々 の 物 数奇 らしい 視線 を 受け流し ながら 、ぐるっと 食卓 を 回って 自分 の 席 まで 行く と 、田川 博士 は ぬすむ ように 夫人 の 顔 を ちょっと うかがって おいて 、肥った からだ を よける ように して 葉子 を 自分 の 隣 に すわらせた 。 ・・

しかし 話 の 糸口 は 思う ように 出て来なかった 。 事もなげに 落ち付いた 様子 に 見える 博士 の 心 の 中 に 、軽い 混乱 が 起こっている のを 、葉子 は すぐ 見て取った 。 思いどおりに 一座 の 気分 を 動揺 させる 事 が できる と いう 自信 が 裏書き された よう に 葉子 は 思って そっと 満足 を 感じて いた 。 そして ボーイ 長 の さしず で ボーイ ら が 手 器用に 運んで 来た ポタージュ を すすり ながら 、田川 博士 の ほう の 話 に 耳 を 立てた 。 ・・

葉子 が 食堂 に 現われて 自分 の 視界 に は いって くる と 、臆面 も なく じっと 目 を 定めて その 顔 を 見やった 後に 、無頓着に スプーン を 動かし ながら 、時々 食卓 の 客 を 見回して 気 を 配って いた 事務長 は 、下 くちびる を 返して 鬚 の 先 を 吸い ながら 、塩さび の した 太い 声 で 、・・

「それ から モンロー 主義 の 本体 は 」・・

と 話 の 糸目 を 引っぱり出して おいて 、まともに 博士 を 打ち 見 やった 。 博士 は 少し 面 伏せ な 様子 で 、・・

と 癖 の ない 発音 で いって のけた 。 これ を 聞いた 一座 は 、ことに 外国人 たち は 、椅子 から 乗り出す ように して 夫人 を 見た 。 夫人 は その 時 人 の 目 に は つき かねる ほど の 敏捷さ で 葉子 の ほう を うかがった 。 葉子 は 眉 一 つ 動かさ ず に 、下 を 向いた まま で スープ を すすって いた 。 ・・

慎み深く 大さじ を 持ち あつかい ながら 、葉子 は 自分 に 何 か きわ立った 印象 を 与えよう と して 、いろいろな まね を 競い合っている ような 人々 の さま を 心 の 中 で 笑っていた 。 実際 葉子 が 姿 を 見せて から 、食堂 の 空気 は 調子 を 変えて いた 。 ことに 若い 人 たち の 間 に は 一種 の 重苦しい 波動 が 伝わった らしく 、物をいう 時 、彼ら は 知らず知らず 激昂した ような 高い 調子 に なっていた 。 ことに いちばん 年 若く 見える 一人 の 上品な 青年 ――船長 の 隣 座 に いる ので 葉子 は 家柄 の 高い 生まれ に 違いない と 思った ――など は 、葉子 と 一目 顔 を 見合わした が 最後 、震えん ばかりに 興奮して 、顔 を 得上げないで いた 。 それ だ のに 事務 長 だけ は 、いっこう 動かさ れた 様子 が 見えぬ ばかり か 、どうかした 拍子 に 顔 を 合わせた 時 でも 、その 臆面 の ない 、人 を 人 とも 思わぬ ような 熟視 は 、かえって 葉子 の 視線 を たじろが した 。 人間 を ながめ あきた ような 気 倦る げ な その 目 は 、濃い まつ毛 の 間 から insolent な 光 を 放って 人 を 射た 。 葉子 は こうして 思わず ひとみ を たじろがす たび ごとに 事務長 に 対して 不思議な 憎しみ を 覚える と ともに 、もう 一度 その 憎むべき 目 を 見すえて その 中 に 潜む 不思議 を 存分に 見窮めて やりたい 心 に なった 。 葉子 は そうした 気分 に 促されて 時々 事務長 の ほう に ひきつけられる ように 視線 を 送った が 、その たびごとに 葉子 の ひとみ は もろくも 手きびしく 追い 退けられた 。 ・・

こうして 妙な 気分 が 食卓 の 上 に 織りなさ れ ながら やがて 食事 は 終わった 。 一同 が 座 を 立つ 時 、物 慣らさ れた 物腰 で 、椅子 を 引いて くれた 田川 博士 に やさしく 微笑 を 見せて 礼 を し ながら も 、葉子 は やはり 事務長 の 挙動 を 仔細に 見る 事 に 半ば 気 を 奪われて いた 。 ・・

「少し 甲板 に 出て ごらん に なり まし な 。 寒く と も 気分 は 晴れ晴れ します から 。 わたし も ちょ と 部屋 に 帰って ショール を 取って 出て 見ます 」・・

葉子 も 部屋 に 帰って 見た が 、今 まで 閉じこもって ばかり いる と さほど に も 思わなかった けれども 、食堂 ほど の 広さ の 所 から でも そこ に 来て 見る と 、息 気づまり が し そうに 狭苦しかった 。 で 、葉子 は 長椅子 の 下 から 、木村 の 父 が 使い慣れた 古 トランク ――その 上 に 古藤 が 油絵 の 具 で Ｙ・Ｋと書いてくれた古トランクを引き出して、その中から黒い駝鳥の羽のボアを取り出して、西洋臭いそのにおいを快く鼻に感じながら、深々と首を巻いて、甲板に出て行って見た。 窮屈な 階子 段 を やや よ ろ よろし ながら のぼって 、重い 戸 を あけよう と する と 外気 の 抵抗 が なかなか 激しくって 押しもどさ れよう と した 。 きりっと 搾り 上げた ような 寒さ が 、戸 の すき から 縦 に 細長く 葉子 を 襲った 。 ・・

葉子はふらふらと船にゆり上げゆり下げられながら、まんじりともせずに、黒い波の峰と波の谷とがかわるがわる目の前に現われるのを見つめていた。 豊かな 髪 の 毛 を とおして 寒さ が しんしんと 頭 の 中 に しみこむ の が 、初め の うち は 珍しく いい 気持ち だった が 、やがて しびれる ような 頭痛 に 変わって 行った 。 ……と 急に 、どこ を どう 潜んで 来た と も 知れない 、いやな さびしさ が 盗風 の ように 葉子 を 襲った 。 船 に 乗って から 春 の 草 の ように 萌え出した 元気 は ぽっきり と 心 を 留められて しまった 。 こめかみ が じんじん と 痛み 出して 、泣きつかれ の あと に 似た 不愉快な 睡気 の 中 に 、胸 を ついて 嘔き気 さえ 催して 来た 。 葉子 は あわてて あたり を 見回した が 、もう そこ い らに は 散歩 の 人足 も 絶えて いた 。 けれども 葉子 は 船室 に 帰る 気力 も なく 、右手 で しっかり と 額 を 押えて 、手欄 に 顔 を 伏せ ながら 念じる ように 目 を つぶって 見た が 、いいよう の ない さびしさ は いや 増す ばかりだった 。 葉子 は ふと 定子 を 懐妊 していた 時 の はげしい 悪 阻 の 苦痛 を 思い出した 。 それ は おり から 痛ましい 回想 だった 。 ……定子 ……葉子 は もう その 笞 に は 堪え ない と いう ように 頭 を 振って 、気 を 紛らす ために 目 を 開いて 、とめどなく 動く 波 の 戯れ を 見よう と した が 、一目 見る や ぐらぐら と 眩暈 を 感じて 一 たまりも なく また 突っ伏して しまった 。 深い 悲しい ため息 が 思わず 出る の を 留めよう と して も かい が なかった 。 「船 に 酔った のだ 」と 思った 時 に は 、もう から だ じゅう は 不快な 嘔感 の ため に わなわな と 震えていた 。 ・・

「嘔 け ば いい 」・・

そう 思って 手 欄 から 身 を 乗り出す 瞬間 、からだ じゅう の 力 は 腹 から 胸もと に 集まって 、背 は 思わず も 激しく 波打った 。 その あと は もう 夢 の ようだった 。
