むかし 、 平戸 (→ 平戸 市 ) の 町 の はずれ に は 蟹 ヶ 淵 ( かに が ふち ) と いう 深い 淵 が あって 、 ここ に は 何 十 年 も 前 から 人 を 襲う 主 が 住みついて いる と の うわさ が あり ました 。

ある 日 の 事 、 お 百姓 の 三吉 ( さん きち ) の 三 人 兄弟 の 二 番 目 の 子ども が 遊び に 出た まま 、 いつまで たって も 戻って き ませ ん でした 。

そして 淵 に 到着 した 殿さま は 、 ふんどし 姿 で 口 に 刀 を くわえる と 、 「 お前たち は 、 ここ で 待って おれ 」 と 、 家来 や 村人 たち が 引き止める の を 振り切って 淵 に 飛び込んだ のです 。

あっ ち を 探す と しよう 」 そう 言って 今度 は 岸 から もっと 離れた 草 が ボウボウ に 生い茂る あたり まで 泳いで いって 、 もう 一 度 水 の 中 に 潜り ました 。

そこ で 村人 たち も 一緒に なって 何とか 引き上げる と 、 それ は 、 たたみ 三 畳 分 ほど の 大きな こうら を 持った 大 ガニ だった のです 。
