もう そこら が 一ぺん に まっくら に なった ように 思いました 。 その とき 、

「おまえ は いったい 何 を 泣いて いる の 。 ちょっと こっち を ごらん 」いま まで たびたび 聞こえた 、あの やさしい セロ の ような 声 が 、ジョバンニ の うしろ から 聞こえました 。 ジョバンニ は 、はっと 思って 涙 を はらって そっち を ふり向きました 、さっき まで カムパネルラ の すわって いた 席 に 黒い 大きな 帽子 を かぶった 青白い 顔 の やせた 大人 が 、やさしく わらって 大きな 一冊 の 本 を もって いました 。 「おまえ の ともだち が どこ か へ 行った の だろう 。 あの ひと は ね 、ほんとうに こんや 遠く へ 行った のだ 。 おまえ は もう カムパネルラ を さがして も むだだ 」

「ああ 、どうして なんですか 。 ぼく は カムパネルラ と いっしょに まっすぐに 行こう と 言った んです 」

「ああ 、そうだ 。 みんな が そう 考える 。 けれども いっしょに 行け ない 。 そして みんな が カムパネルラ だ 。 おまえ が あう どんな ひと でも 、みんな 何べん も おまえ と いっしょに りんご を たべたり 汽車 に 乗ったり した のだ 。 だから やっぱり おまえ は さっき 考えた ように 、あらゆる ひと の いちばん の 幸福 を さがし 、みんな と いっしょに 早く そこ に 行く が いい 、そこ で ばかり おまえ は ほんとうに カムパネルラ と いつまでも いっしょに 行ける のだ 」

「ああ ぼく は きっと そう します 。 ぼく は どうして それ を 求めたら いい でしょう 」

「ああ わたくし も それ を もとめて いる 。 おまえ は おまえの 切符 を しっかり もって おいで 。 そして 一心に 勉強 し なけ ぁ いけない 。 おまえ は 化学 を 習った ろう 、水 は 酸素 と 水素 から できている と いう こと を 知っている 。 いま は たれ だって それ を 疑 やしない 。 実験 して みる と ほんとうに そう な んだ から 。 けれども 昔 は それ を 水銀 と 塩 で できている と 言ったり 、水銀 と 硫黄 で できている と 言ったり いろいろ 議論 した のだ 。 みんな が めいめい じぶん の 神さま が ほんとうの 神さま だ と いう だろう 、けれども お互い ほかの 神さま を 信ずる 人たち の した こと でも 涙 が こぼれる だろう 。 それ から ぼくたち の 心 が いい と か わるい と か 議論 する だろう 。 そして 勝負 が つか ない だろう 。 けれども 、もし おまえ が ほんとうに 勉強 して 実験 で ちゃんと ほんとうの 考え と 、うそ の 考え と を 分けて しまえば 、その 実験 の 方法 さえ きまれば 、もう 信仰 も 化学 と 同じ ように なる 。 けれども 、ね 、ちょっと この 本 を ごらん 、いい かい 、これ は 地理 と 歴史 の 辞典 だ よ 。 この 本 の この 頁 は ね 、紀元前 二千二百 年 の 地理 と 歴史 が 書いてある 。 よく ごらん 、紀元前 二千二百年 の こと でない よ 、紀元前 二千二百年 のころ に みんな が 考えていた 地理 と 歴史 という もの が 書いてある 。

その ひと は 指 を 一 本 あげて しずかに それ を おろしました 。 すると いきなり ジョバンニ は 自分 と いう もの が 、じぶん の 考え と いう もの が 、汽車 や その 学者 や 天の川 や 、みんな いっしょに ぽかっと 光って 、しいん と なくなって 、ぽかっと ともって また なくなって 、そして その 一つ が ぽかっと ともる と 、あらゆる 広い 世界 が がらんと ひらけ 、あらゆる 歴史 が そなわり 、すっと 消える と 、もう がらんと した 、ただ もう それっきり に なってしまう のを 見ました 。 だんだん それ が 早く なって 、まもなく すっかり もと の とおり に なりました 。 「さあ いい か 。 だから おまえ の 実験 は 、この きれぎれの 考え の はじめ から 終わり すべて に わたる ようで なければ いけない 。 それ が むずかしい こと な のだ 。 けれども 、もちろん その とき だけ の で も いい のだ 。 ああ ごらん 、あす こに プレシオス が 見える 。 おまえ は あの プレシオス の 鎖 を 解か なければ ならない 」

その とき まっくらな 地平線 の 向こう から 青じろい のろし が 、まるで ひるま の ように うちあげられ 、汽車 の 中 は すっかり 明るく なりました 。 そして のろし は 高く そら に かかって 光り つづけました 。 「ああ マジェラン の 星雲 だ 。 さあ もう きっと 僕 は 僕の ために 、僕の お母さん の ために 、カムパネルラ の ために 、みんな の ために 、ほんとうの ほんとうの 幸福 を さがす ぞ 」ジョバンニ は 唇 を 噛んで 、その マジェラン の 星雲 を のぞんで 立ちました 。 その いちばん 幸福な その ひと の ため に ！

「さあ 、切符 を しっかり 持って おいで 。 お前 は もう 夢 の 鉄道 の 中 で なし に ほんとうの 世界 の 火 や はげしい 波 の 中 を 大股 に まっすぐに 歩いて 行か なければ いけない 。 天の川 の なか で たった 一つ の 、ほんとうの その 切符 を 決して おまえ は なくして はいけない 」

あの セロ の ような 声 が した と 思う と ジョバンニ は 、あの 天の川 が もう まるで 遠く 遠く なって 風 が 吹き 自分 は まっすぐに 草 の 丘 に 立って いる のを 見 、また 遠く から あの ブルカニロ 博士 の 足音 の しずかに 近づいて 来る のを ききました 。 「 ありがとう 。 私 は たいへん いい 実験 を した 。 私 は こんな しずかな 場所 で 遠く から 私 の 考え を 人 に 伝える 実験 を したい と さっき 考えて いた 。 お前 の 言った 語 は みんな 私 の 手帳 に とって ある 。 さあ 帰って お やすみ 。 お前 は 夢 の 中 で 決心 した とおり まっすぐに 進んで 行く が いい 。 そして これ から なんでも いつでも 私 の とこ へ 相談 に おいでなさい 」

博士 は 小さく 折った 緑 いろ の 紙 を ジョバンニ の ポケット に 入れました 。 そして もう その かたち は 天気 輪 の 柱 の 向こう に 見え なく なって いました 。 ジョバンニ は まっすぐに 走って 丘 を おりました 。 そして ポケット が たいへん 重く カチカチ 鳴る のに 気 が つきました 。 林 の 中 で とまって それ を しらべて みましたら 、あの 緑いろ の さっき 夢 の 中 で 見た あやしい 天 の 切符 の 中 に 大きな 二枚 の 金貨 が 包んで ありました 。 「博士 ありがとう 、おっかさん 。 すぐ 乳 を もって行きます よ 」ジョバンニ は 叫んで また 走り はじめました 。 何 か いろいろの もの が 一ぺんに ジョバンニ の 胸 に 集まって なんとも 言えず かなしい ような 新しい ような 気 が する のでした 。

琴 の 星 が ず うっと 西 の 方 へ 移って そして また 夢 の よう に 足 を のばして いました 。 ジョバンニ は 眼 を ひらきました 。 もと の 丘 の 草 の 中 に つかれて ねむって いた のでした 。 胸 は なんだか おかしく 熱 り 、頬 に は つめたい 涙 が ながれて いました 。 ジョバンニ は ばね の ように はね起きました 。 町 は すっかり さっき の 通り に 下 で たくさんの 灯 を 綴って は いました が 、その 光 は なんだか さっき より は 熱した と いう ふうでした 。 そして たったいま 夢 であるいた 天の川 も やっぱり さっき の 通り に 白く ぼんやり かかり 、まっ黒 な 南 の 地平線 の 上 で は ことに けむった ように なって 、その 右 に は 蠍座 の 赤い 星 が うつくしく きらめき 、そら ぜんたい の 位置 は そんなに 変わって も いない ようでした 。 ジョバンニ は いっさ んに 丘 を 走って 下りました 。 まだ 夕 ごはん を たべ ないで 待って いる お母さん の こと が 胸 いっぱい に 思いださ れた のです 。 どんどん 黒い 松 の 林 の 中 を 通って 、それから ほの白い 牧場 の 柵 を まわって 、さっき の 入口 から 暗い 牛舎 の 前 へ また 来ました 。 そこ に は 誰 か が いま 帰った らしく 、さっき なかった 一つ の 車 が 何か の 樽 を 二つ 載っけて 置いて ありました 。 「今晩 は 」ジョバンニ は 叫びました 。 「はい 」白い 太い ずぼん を はいた 人 が すぐ 出て 来て 立ちました 。 「なんの ご用 です か 」

「今日 牛乳 が ぼく の ところ へ 来 なかった のです が 」

「あ 、済みません でした 」その 人 は すぐ 奥 へ 行って 一 本 の 牛乳 瓶 を もって 来て ジョバンニ に 渡し ながら 、また 言いました 。 「ほんとうに 済みません でした 。 今日 は ひるすぎ 、うっかり して こうし の 柵 を あけて おいた もん です から 、大将 さっそく 親牛 の ところ へ 行って 半分 ばかり のんで しまい まして ね ……」

その 人 は わらいました 。 「そう です か 。 では いただいて 行きます 」「ええ 、どうも 済みません でした 」「いいえ 」 ジョバンニ は まだ 熱い 乳 の 瓶 を 両方 の てのひら で 包む ように もって 牧場 の 柵 を 出ました 。 そして しばらく 木 の ある 町 を 通って 大通り へ 出て また しばらく 行きます と みち は 十文字 に なって 、その 右手 の 方 、通り の はずれ に さっき カムパネルラ たち の あかり を 流し に 行った 川 へ かかった 大きな 橋 の やぐら が 夜 の そらに ぼんやり 立って いました 。 ところが その 十字 に なった 町 かど や 店 の 前 に 女 たち が 七 、八 人 ぐらい ずつ 集まって 橋 の 方 を 見ながら 何か ひそひそ 談している のです 。 それ から 橋 の 上 に も いろいろな あかり が いっぱい な のでした 。

ジョバンニ は なぜか さあっと 胸 が 冷たく なった ように 思いました 。 そして いきなり 近く の 人 たち へ 、

「何 か あった んです か 」と 叫ぶ ように ききました 。 「こども が 水 へ 落ちた んです よ 」一人 が 言います と 、その 人たち は 一斉に ジョバンニ の 方 を 見ました 。 ジョバンニ は まるで 夢中 で 橋 の 方 へ 走りました 。 橋 の 上 は 人 で いっぱい で 河 が 見えません でした 。 白い 服 を 着た 巡査 も 出て いました 。 ジョバンニ は 橋 の たもと から 飛ぶ ように 下 の 広い 河原 へ おりました 。 その 河原 の 水ぎわ に 沿って たくさんの あかり が せわしく のぼったり 下ったり して いました 。 向こう岸 の 暗い どて に も 火 が 七 つ 八 つ うごいて いました 。 その まん 中 を もう 烏 瓜 の あかり もない 川 が 、 わずかに 音 を たてて 灰 いろ に しずかに 流れて いた のでした 。

河原 の いちばん 下流 の 方 へ 洲 の ように なって 出た ところ に 人 の 集まり が くっきり まっ黒 に 立って いました 。 ジョバンニ は どんどん そっち へ 走りました 。 すると ジョバンニ は いきなり さっき カムパネルラ と いっしょ だった マルソ に 会いました 。 マルソ が ジョバンニ に 走り 寄って 言いました 。 「ジョバンニ 、カムパネルラ が 川 へ はいった よ 」

「どうして 、いつ 」

「 ザネリ が ね 、 舟 の 上 から 烏 うり の あかり を 水 の 流れる 方 へ 押して やろう と した ん だ 。 その とき 舟 が ゆれた もん だ から 水 へ 落っこったろう 。 すると カムパネルラ が すぐ 飛びこんだ んだ 。 そして ザネリ を 舟 の 方 へ 押して よこした 。 ザネリ は カトウ に つかまった 。 けれども あと カムパネルラ が 見え ない んだ 」

「みんな さがして る んだろう 」

「ああ 、すぐ みんな 来た 。 カムパネルラ の お 父さん も 来た 。 けれども 見つから ない んだ 。 ザネリ は うち へ 連れられてった 」ジョバンニ は みんな の いる そっち の 方 へ 行きました 。 そこ に 学生 たち や 町 の 人 たち に 囲まれて 青じろい とがった あご を した カムパネルラ の お 父さん が 黒い 服 を 着て まっすぐに 立って 左手 に 時計 を 持って じっと 見つめて いた のです 。 みんな も じっと 河 を 見て いました 。 誰 も 一言 も 物 を 言う 人 も ありません でした 。 ジョバンニ は わくわく わくわく 足 が ふるえました 。 魚 を とる とき の アセチレンランプ が たくさん せわしく 行ったり 来たり して 、黒い 川 の 水 は ちらちら 小さな 波 を たてて 流れている の が 見える のでした 。

下流 の 方 の 川 は ば いっぱい 銀河 が 大きく 写って 、まるで 水 の ない そのまま の そら の ように 見えました 。 ジョバンニ は 、その カムパネルラ は もう あの 銀河 の はずれ に しか いない と いう ような 気 が して しかたなかった のです 。 けれども みんな は まだ 、どこ か の 波 の 間 から 、

「ぼく ずいぶん 泳いだ ぞ 」と 言い ながら カムパネルラ が 出て 来る か 、あるいは カムパネルラ が どこ かの 人 の 知らない 洲 に でも 着いて 立って いて 誰 かの 来る のを 待っている か という ような 気 が して しかたない らしい のでした 。 けれども にわかに カムパネルラ の お 父さん が きっぱり 言いました 。 「もう 駄目です 。 落ちて から 四十五 分 たちました から 」 ジョバンニ は 思わず かけよって 博士 の 前 に 立って 、ぼく は カムパネルラ の 行った 方 を 知っています 、ぼく は カムパネルラ と いっしょに 歩いて いた のです 、と 言おう と しました が 、もう のど が つまって なんとも 言えません でした 。 すると 博士 は ジョバンニ が あいさつ に 来た と でも 思った もの です か 、しばらく しげしげ ジョバンニ を 見て いました が 、 「あなた は ジョバンニ さん でした ね 。 どうも 今晩は ありがとう 」と ていねいに 言いました 。 ジョバンニ は 何も 言え ず に ただ おじぎ を しました 。 「あなた の お父さん は もう 帰って います か 」博士 は 堅く 時計 を 握った まま 、また ききました 。 「いいえ 」ジョバンニ は かすかに 頭 を ふりました 。 「どうした の か なあ 、ぼく に は 一昨日 たいへん 元気な 便り が あった んだ が 。 今日 あたり もう 着く ころ なんだが 。 船 が 遅れた んだ な 。 ジョバンニ さん 。 あした 放課後 みなさん とうち へ 遊び に 来て ください ね 」

そう 言い ながら 博士 は また 、川下 の 銀河 の いっぱいに うつった 方 へ じっと 眼 を 送りました 。 ジョバンニ は もう いろいろな こと で 胸 が いっぱいで 、なんにも 言えずに 博士 の 前 を はなれて 、早く お母さん に 牛乳 を 持って行って 、お父さん の 帰る こと を 知らせよう と 思う と 、もう いちもくさんに 河原 を 街 の 方 へ 走りました 。
