Eccoci al gran giorno!

È dal 19 che non scrivo più una riga qui nel giornalino, ma ho avuto tanto da fare!

In questi giorni mi sono accorto che i ragazzi possono essere molto utili nelle case quando vi sono circostanze solenni, e quando le persone grandi chiedono loro un piacere con educazione e con garbo.

Giannino qua! Giannino là! Giannino su! Giannino giù! Non riparavo a contentar tutti. Chi voleva il rocchetto di cotone, chi la matassina di seta, chi i campioni di stoffe, chi mi mandava alla posta a ritirar lettere, chi a far telegrammi, insomma arrivavo alla sera stanco morto, ma con la coscienza tranquilla d'aver fatto il mio dovere per l'avvenire di mia sorella. Finalmente il gran giorno è venuto, oggi ci sarà lo sposalizio e stasera farò i fuochi e così dimostrerò a Collalto, che ride sempre quando dice che io son suo cognato, come anche i ragazzi sappiano nutrire l'affetto per i parenti e la gratitudine per le scatole di tinte che ricevono in regalo. È arrivata anche la zia Bettina per assistere allo sposalizio, e così ha rifatto la pace con tutti. Però, mentre la Luisa si aspettava da lei in regalo quel paio di diamanti che ebbe in eredità dalla povera nonna, ha avuto invece una coperta da letto di lana gialla e celeste che la zia Bettina aveva fatto con le sue mani.

Luisa è rimasta mortificata, e io ho sentito che diceva a Virginia:

- Quella vecchia dispettosa si è voluta vendicare dell'altra volta che venne da noi. Però mia sorella ha avuto dei bei regali da tutte le parti!...

Non dico nulla dei dolci che ci son preparati in sala da pranzo!... Una cosa da sbalordire!... Però il migliore è la panna montata coi cialdoni.

Tutti son pronti, e fra pochi minuti si andrà al Municipio. Ma la zia Bettina non verrà, perché ha deciso invece di ritornare a casa sua col treno che parte tra mezz'ora. Nessuno sa spiegarsi il perché di questa improvvisa decisione essendo stata accolta con tutti i dovuti riguardi; e alla mamma che la pregava di dire francamente se qualcuno le aveva mancato di rispetto senza accorgersene, ella ha risposto a denti stretti:

- Vo via, anzi, perché mi si rispetta troppo; e dirai a Luisa che se vuoi rispettarmi anche meglio mi rimandi la coperta di lana che io ho avuto la stupidaggine di farle con le mie mani.

E così se n'è andata via senza voler dire altro. Il bello è che io solo so il vero motivo della partenza della zia, ma non lo dico per non guastare la bella sorpresa che avrà mia sorella.

Un'ora fa io ho detto alla zia Bettina: - Cara zia, vuole un buon consiglio? Riporti via quella copertaccia di lana che ha regalato a Luisa e le regali invece i diamanti ai quali mia sorella aveva fatto la bocca... Così si farà più onore, e mia sorella non avrà più ragione di trattarla di vecchia dispettosa!

Ebbene, bisogna che riconosca che questa volta la zia Bettina si è condotta molto bene. Ella deve aver capito di avere sbagliato, perché ha accettato il mio consiglio e se ne va di corsa a casa sua a prendere i diamanti per Luisa che sarà felicissima, e tutto per merito mio.

È colpa mia, domando io, se stamani il Collalto ha ricevuto un telegramma ed è dovuto partire insieme alla Luisa col treno delle sei, invece di trattenersi la sera come era stato stabilito prima?

Naturalmente io che avevo fatto tutto il mio progetto per fare i fuochi stasera in giardino son rimasto male; ma nessuno si piglia mai pensiero di indagare i dolori che si nascondono nell'anima dei ragazzi, come se fossimo dei pezzi di legno, mentre invece tutti si scagliano addosso a noi quando per sfogare il nostro dolore si è fatto qualcosa che ha urtato i nervi alle persone grandi... E poi, alla fine, che ho fatto mai? Uno scherzo, un semplice scherzo, che, se il Collalto fosse stato meno pauroso, tutti avrebbero preso per il suo verso senza far tanto baccano...

Che scena!

Non potendo fare i fuochi la sera, avevo pensato di accendere almeno una girandola e me n'ero messa in tasca una di quelle più piccole, aspettando il momento opportuno. Quando gli sposi sono scesi dal Municipio, io mi son messo dietro a loro. Erano così commossi, che non mi hanno neanche visto. Allora, non so come, m'è venuto l'idea di attaccar la girandola al bottone di dietro del frak di Collalto e acceso un fiammifero le ho dato fuoco... Non è possibile ridire quel che è successo... ed è meglio che cerchi di riprodurlo con le tinte che mi regalò il Collalto stesso, con quelle tinte per le quali io sentivo tanta gratitudine verso di lui da spendere tutto lo scudo che mi aveva dato sua moglie, che è mia sorella, in tanti fuochi d'artificio!... Che scena!

Il dottore, mentre la girandola gli girava dietro le falde, tremava e urlava senza sapere che cosa fosse accaduto, Luisa era quasi svenuta, gli invitati anch'essi erano tutti impauriti... e io mi divertivo un mondo, quando a un tratto mio padre in mezzo alla confusione generale mi ha preso per un orecchio e mi ha accompagnato fin qui, a forza di parolacce e di pedate. In quel pandemonio mi pareva d'essere, un rivoluzionario russo dopo un attentato allo Zar! Ma io non avevo per niente l'intenzione di attentare alla vita di Collalto, e volevo fare semplicemente uno scherzo per esprimere la mia gioia, tant'è vero che non è accaduto nulla di male, e se la gente che s'è trovata al fatto fosse stata più coraggiosa, tutto sarebbe finito in una risata. Purtroppo, però, le buone intenzioni dei ragazzi non sono mai riconosciute, ed eccomi qui in prigione, vittima innocente delle esagerazioni delle persone grandi, condannato a pane e acqua mentre giù tutti gozzovigliano e si finiscono i dolci!

Ho sentito il rumore della carrozza che portava via gli sposi, poi la voce di Caterina che cantava la solita canzonetta della Gran Via , mentre metteva a posto i piatti:

Tutti sono allegri e contenti, tutti hanno mangiato a crepapelle, e io son qui solo, condannato a pane e acqua, e tutto questo mi succede per il troppo amor fraterno che mi ha spinto a festeggiare lo sposalizio di mia sorella.

Il peggio è che si fa sera e io non ho né candela né fiammiferi... L'idea di dovere star qui solo al buio mi mette i brividi, e ora capisco tutto quello che doveva soffrire il povero Silvio Pellico e tanti altri gloriosi superstiti dalle patrie battaglie [1] ingiustamente perseguitati. Sono uscito di sotto il letto e l'ho abbracciata gridando; ma lei mi ha detto subito: - Silenzio, per carità; il babbo è uscito un momento... Guai, se sapesse che son venuta qui da te!... Prendi!

E mi ha dato un panino gravido col prosciutto e un involtino di confetti.

L'ho sempre detto io: Ada è la migliore di tutte, e io le voglio molto bene perché lei compatisce i ragazzi e non li infastidisce con tante prediche inutili. Mi ha portato anche una candela e una scatola di fiammiferi e Il Corsaro nero del Salgari. Meno male... Almeno potrò leggere e dimenticare le ingiustizie!
