Mentre nell'acqua ei sta fino alla gola, viene a passare un maestro di scuola. - Aiuto, aiuto! - grida quel che annega. Il maestro si ferma, e a lui che prega, con una voce burbera e nasale, gli somministra questa paternale:

- Ah scimunito, ah sciocco, ah babbuasso! Guarda dove si caccia il satanasso. Andate pure a prender dell'affanno per questi tristi, oh sì, che vi faranno morir tisici! ah poveri parenti a cui tocca di questi malviventi! Ah i tempi tristi, oh i figli traditori... -. E quando ebbe finito, il tirò fuori.

Quanti non sono al mondo altri pedanti e brontoloni e critici ignoranti, razza dotta più in chiacchiere che in scienze, che Dio conserva a nostra dannazione! In ogni cosa, a torto od a ragione, bisogna ch'essi sputino sentenze. Prima di pena tirami, se puoi, il bel discorso lo udiremo poi.
