The Polyglot Dream, 10 things you need to know about living in Barcelona - Part 5

10 things you need to know about living in Barcelona - Part 5

The city is simply wonderful, there is everything a tourist hopes to find.

You can walk in the streets in picturesque and still little touristy areas like Gracia, you can walk in parks like the Parc Guell that stand on a hill from which you can see the whole city, and which are dotted with picturesque, original buildings , sinuous, full of colors. An even more beautiful view from above appears before you if you decide to go to Mount Tibidabo or to Montjuic, with its fortress. And then you can decide to visit Chiese, to walk in neighborhoods like the Born, of which some parts are not very touristy, others less, but always attractive. Admire the complexity of the Sagrada Familia, La Pedrera. Walk to Passeig de Gracia, along the Rambla. And then there's the sea. The sea near a city gives it a particular air, embraces it gently, and makes it more romantic when you feel pensive, and carefree when you want to have a party with friends and be enveloped by pleasures that are a bit ephemeral but engaging an alcoholic evening with friends. The beach, with many clubs, with boys playing volleyball, or companies of other kids who spend the afternoon chatting and having fun are another typical and unique show of Barcelona. The wooden pier at the bottom of the lips, the "parked" boats, the seagulls that fly a bit everywhere between sea and sky. Every time I returned from a long chat and walk with some friend or friend, I had in my eyes and in my mind a happiness colored by the incredible beauty of this city. Barcelona is generally not a dangerous city, no more than Rome or Paris, but you have to be careful where you go, some neighborhoods or streets can be dangerous, especially at La Rambla, and in some side streets.

But the thing that happened to me to see more in Barcelona are the pickpockets. Nothing has ever happened to me, but it happened - and not just once - that some friends found their bag open and their wallet or camera disappeared, and I saw people putting their hand into the bag of unsuspecting tourists, especially in the metro. 10.

Il carattere degli abitanti Der Charakter der Bewohner The character of the inhabitants Le caractère des habitants Come dicevo prima, non è facile integrarsi con i Catalani, che conservano gelosamente quello che hanno, e a ragione. As I said before, it is not easy to integrate with the Catalans, who jealously preserve what they have, and with good reason.

They have a firm, determined, sometimes harsh, but also artistic, free character. I am struck by the sometimes almost proud shabbiness with which some people dress. But maybe it's not sloppiness, it's a real style, it's part of the way of life. It's freedom, it's not caring about what people think. Tattoos, "Mohawk-style" hair - that is, with shorter hair in front and a tuft of hair that reaches the base of the neck - wide trousers, earrings on the nose or eyebrows, sometimes at times listless, sometimes firm, but always free . Many young people dress, consume hashish, chat in this way: in a free way, without prejudice, never forced by social norms. The inhabitants make the city, but the city itself is shaped according to a romantic and fascinating disorder, framed by the palaces, statues, frames of Gaudì and many other artists. For the city then there are some real "characters" who cannot escape even the most distracted tourist. One of these is called "the naked man of the Rambla". A 60-70-year-old gentleman who often crosses the Rambla completely naked, apart from a red cap with a visor and tattoos all over his body (just write it on google to read various anecdotes about it and also some images and videos on YouTube) with a do very detached, careless of passers-by, as if to say “I enjoy this wonderful city and I don't give a damn about what people think. In part that man, with his tattoos, piercings and that free and natural way of walking, is the image of Barcelona. Conclusione Fazit
