Bonjour et bienvenue dans ce nouvel épisode du podcast de Français Authentique qui est là pour t'aider à comprendre le français mais surtout passer à l'état d'expression et l'état dans lequel tu es capable de t'exprimer en français. Aujourd'hui, on va répondre à Adama qui m'a envoyé un mail en me demandant d'expliquer l'expression « tomber à pic ». Que signifie « tomber à pic » ?

On va parler de tout ça. En ce moment, on approche de la fin de l'année, on est très proche du nouvel an et ce n'est pas encore à 100 % clair pour moi ce que je ferai au moment du nouvel an. J'enregistre les podcasts à l'avance, donc, il me reste encore un peu de temps. Ma femme Céline travaille puisqu'elle est puéricultrice (infirmière pour enfant) et elle travaille. Chaque année, elle travaille soit pour Noël, soit pour le nouvel an. Cette année, elle travaille au nouvel an. Donc, soit je vais rester avec mes amis dans les Ardennes (d'où je viens), soit je rentrerai chez moi en Moselle pour travailler sur mes objectifs. C'est ce que j'avais fait il y a deux ans. J'étais resté chez moi et c'était sympa. Donc, je ne sais pas encore ; je n'ai pas encore vraiment décidé. En tout cas, j'aime beaucoup la fin de l'année parce que c'est le moment où on peut refléter sur ce qui s'est passé, où on peut se fixer de nouveaux objectifs et où on peut exprimer de la gratitude. On passe à notre expression « tomber à pic » composée du verbe « tomber » dont on a parlé la semaine dernière. On a parlé de « tomber des nues ». Le verbe « tomber », ça veut dire « être amené vers le sol par son poids » et souvent, quand on trébuche quand on marche, on manque un pas et on tombe sur le sol, on finit par terre. On est tombé.

Le mot « pic » a plusieurs sens, mais le plus courant, c'est quelque chose de pointu. Un pic, c'est quelque chose qui a une pointe au bout, qui, lorsqu'on le touche avec son doigt, ça nous fait mal ; on a une petite douleur. Par exemple, en haut de certaines montagnes, c'est pointu, c'est un pic. On appelle ça un pic.

Si vous utilisez des aiguilles pour coudre, eh bien les aiguilles, ce sont des petits pics, ça pique. Les cure-dents (pour enlever les aliments entre les dents), ça pique également. Donc, un pic, c'est quelque chose de pointu.

Quand on comprend ces mots, ce n'est pas suffisant pour comprendre le sens. C'est très souvent le cas avec les expressions idiomatiques et c'est pour ça que chaque dimanche j'en explique une différente parce qu'on comprend les mots, mais on ne comprend pas l'expression et je sais que c'est très frustrant.

Il y a une série télévisée américaine qui s'appelle « The fall guy » et en français, ils ont traduit ça par « L'homme qui tombe à pic ». C'était dans les années 80. C'était un cascadeur qui était toujours là quand il fallait. Donc, l'homme qui tombe à pic, c'était l'homme qui était là toujours au bon moment, qui arrivait toujours exactement quand il fallait.

Prenons quelques exemples, comme d'habitude, pour bien comprendre le sens de l'expression. Imaginons, le premier, il y a une femme qui est à la maison en train de faire les comptes pour aller faire les courses. Ce sont des gens qui ont des petits problèmes d'argent et là, le mari rentre et lui dit : « J'ai eu mon salaire aujourd'hui. » Et là, la femme dit : « Ah, ça tombe à pic parce que je devais aller faire les courses et nous n'avions plus beaucoup d'argent. » Donc, « ça tombe à pic », ça veut dire que ça arrive au bon moment ; le couple, la famille avait besoin d'argent, il y a de l'argent qui arrive, ça tombe à pic, ça tombe au bon moment, c'est exactement ce qu'il fallait.

Imaginez que vous êtes sur votre ordinateur et vous avez un problème et derrière vous, il y a votre frère qui arrive ; votre frère, c'est un expert en ordinateur et il arrive justement à ce moment-là. Vous dites : « Ah ! Tu tombes à pic ! J'ai un problème. » « Tu tombes à pic », ça veut dire « tu arrives au bon moment ». J'ai un problème d'ordinateur, tu es un expert en ordinateur, c'est exactement ce qu'il me fallait ; tu arrives au bon moment, tu tombes à pic.

Un dernier exemple que vous pourriez entendre, c'est un chef qui visite une usine ; il marche dans l'usine et il arrive à un moment où il y a un problème sur la ligne de production. Et juste au même moment, il y a un expert de l'usine qui passe. Le chef – puisque c'est un hasard – il dit : « Ah mais justement, vous tombez à pic ! Nous avons besoin de vous. » « Vous tombez à pic », c'est : il y a un problème, vous êtes une personne qui êtes capable de résoudre le problème, vous tombez à pic.

Je pense que c'est à peu près clair ; ce n'est pas très complexe comme expression. « Tomber à pic », ça veut dire « arriver au bon moment, arriver exactement quand il le fallait ». Et je propose, avant d'aller plus loin, avant de nous quitter, de pratiquer votre prononciation. Il vous suffit pour ça de répéter exactement après moi. On y va !
