Merci de me rejoindre pour ce nouvel épisode du podcast du dimanche de Français Authentique dans lequel j'explique des expressions idiomatiques. Aujourd'hui, on va parler de l'expression « se tourner les pouces » qui m'a été suggérée par notre ami Christophe, un ami allemand, sur Facebook.

Pour l'actualité, il n'y a pas grand-chose à vous dire. En ce moment, je suis très en forme – je suis souvent en forme – je suis en ce moment très très motivé, je lis beaucoup. Je pense que quand on lit beaucoup, ça nous donne – ça dépend de ce qu'on lit évidemment – de la motivation pour travailler, on se sent mieux et je pense que vraiment, l'était d'esprit qu'on a, il correspond à ce qu'on lit et au temps qu'on passe à lire. En ce moment, je lis une heure à une heure trente, plutôt une heure trente chaque jour et je suis très motivé et très content de continuer à travailler pour Français Authentique. Pour le moment, on va étudier une expression française qui est « se tourner les pouces ».

« Tourner », ça veut dire « faire un mouvement en rond, mouvement de rotation ». Par exemple, si je prends ma main et que je fais un cercle avec, eh bien, on dit que je tourne ma main. Si vous êtes en voiture pour conduire pour aller vers la droite ou aller vers la gauche, vous devez tourner le volant. Tourner, c'est faire un mouvement de rotation, un mouvement en rond.

Les pouces, ce sont des parties de votre corps. Le pouce, c'est un doigt ; c'est – si vous regardez votre main – le doigt le plus gros et le plus court. Ça, c'est le pouce. Donc, si vous regardez votre main droite avec la paume (l'intérieur de la main) vers vous, eh bien, votre pouce est à droite. Si vous regardez l'intérieur, le creux de votre main droite (que le creux est en face de vous), eh bien votre pouce est le doigt qui est le plus à droite. Se tourner, ça veut dire faire tourner à soi-même. Donc, se tourner les pouces, ça veut dire faire faire des ronds à ses pouces. Vous prenez vos pouces et vous les faites tourner, ce qui, au sens propre, n'a pas un très grand sens et c'est souvent le cas, vous le savez, avec les expressions idiomatiques. Mais, au sens figuré, c'est une expression qu'on utilise beaucoup et qui signifie « ne rien faire ». Quelqu'un qui se tourne les pouces, c'est quelqu'un qui ne fait rien avec le sous-entendu que c'est quelqu'un de paresseux, de fainéant. Donc, il ne fait rien car il n'a envie de rien faire en fait. Ça, c'est quelqu'un qui se tourne les pouces.

On va prendre, comme d'habitude, quelques exemples de contexte pour bien comprendre le sens de cette expression. Il peut y avoir, par exemple, une femme qui est en train de préparer à manger et puis, elle court pour mettre la table en même temps. Donc, elle fait plein de choses en même temps et son mari est à côté et lui parle ; il ne fait rien et il parle, il lui raconte sa journée, etc. et au bout d'un moment, la femme dit : « Arrête de te tourner les pouces et aide-moi à mettre la table. » Vous voyez, « arrête de te tourner les pouces », ça veut dire : « Arrête d'être à côté de moi à ne rien faire, arrête de ne rien faire, ne sois pas fainéant et viens m'aider à mettre la table. » Imaginons un employé d'une société qui va voir son chef pour se plaindre. Il veut se plaindre d'un de ses collègues et lui dit : « J'en ai marre ! Pendant que moi, je travaille, lui, il se tourne les pouces. » Ce n'est pas une belle attitude, ni l'un ni l'autre. Se tourner les pouces, ce n'est pas beau, mais aller dénoncer au chef, c'est encore moins beau ou c'est… non, c'est pareil. Les deux ne sont pas beaux, mais voilà, vous imaginez la personne qui dit ça : « Pendant que je travaille, lui, il se tourne les pouces. », eh bien, ça veut dire qu'il ne fait rien, que c'est un fainéant qu'il n'y a que la personne qui se plaint qui travaille.

Imaginez un chef qui est sur un chantier de construction et qui arrive et qui dit à son équipe : « Mais arrêtez un peu de vous tourner les pouces ! Nous devons terminer ce chantier demain, donc, faites moins de pauses ! » « Arrêtez de vous tourner les pouces. », ça veut tout simplement dire « arrêtez de ne rien faire, arrêtez de faire tant de pauses, arrêtez de discuter et travaillez. Arrêtez de vous tourner les pouces. » Je pense que c'est à peu près clair pour vous maintenant. Je vous propose de pratique un petit peu, comme à chaque fois, votre prononciation pour que vous amélioriez votre façon de parler le français, de prononcer le français. On y va !
