De but en blanc

Salut et bienvenue dans ce nouvel épisode du podcast de Français Authentique et aujourd'hui, on va parler d'une expression française idiomatique qui m'a été suggérée par notre amie Andréa de Suisse. C'est une membre fidèle qui habite à Lucerne, me semble-t-il, et qui m'a demandé d'expliquer l'expression « de but en blanc », ce qu'on va faire dans un instant.

En ce moment, je trouve que c'est une très belle période de l'année, j'aime toutes les périodes de l'année en principe, moi, je suis heureux en hiver, en automne, en été, au printemps. Je trouve que chaque période a son petit charme, mais j'aime le début du mois de novembre quand les premiers marchés de Noël ouvrent et qu'on a l'occasion de pouvoir être dans l'ambiance de Noël, les enfants sont contents. C'est toujours une chose, moi, qui me rend assez heureux et content.

On passe à l'expression directement, de but en blanc. Le mot « but », ça signifie « objectif ». Par exemple, vous savez, quand on joue au football et qu'on arrive à mettre le ballon dans le but, eh bien, on a marqué un but, on a obtenu un point. On a rempli un objectif. Comme d'habitude, il n'y a rien de tel que des exemples pour bien comprendre le sens d'une expression. Imaginez que vous êtes convoqué par votre chef et là, il vous licencie directement. Vous entrez dans le bureau, vous vous asseyez et il vous dit : « Bah écoutez, on n'est pas satisfait de vos services. Vous êtes licencié. » Et là, en rentrant, vous dites : « Waouh ! Il m'a annoncé mon licenciement de but en blanc. », c'est-à-dire qu'il n'a pas pris de précaution, il n'a pas pris le temps de dire : « Ah ça va ! Vous voulez un café ? » ou : « J'ai une mauvaise nouvelle… » Non ! Il n'a pas cherché à parler d'autres choses, il a directement annoncé la mauvaise nouvelle, de but en blanc, sans précaution, de façon directe et brusque.

On peut dire qu'un médecin a annoncé la maladie à quelqu'un de but en blanc. Encore une fois, là, vous rentrez et le médecin dit : « Je suis désolé de vous annoncer que vous avez un cancer. » Waouh ! Boum ! De but en blanc, absolument sans aucune préparation, sans faire attention aux sentiments, sans prendre de précaution, de façon directe et brusque, de but en blanc.

Vous pouvez entendre, un autre exemple, quelqu'un parler d'une fille qui n'est pas douée avec les sentiments. Elle a annoncé à son ami qu'elle le quittait de but en blanc. Encore une fois, exactement comme dans les deux exemples précédents, la fille n'a pas pris le temps de discuter, n'a pas pris le temps de préparer son ami, elle lui a dit directement : « Ecoute, je ne veux plus être avec toi. » Quelque chose de brusque, direct, sans précaution, on utilise l'expression « de but en blanc ».
