Chapitre 5

Ma très chère Lucy,

Il faut que tu me pardonnes le temps que j'ai pris pour t'écrire, mais j'ai été tout simplement submergée de travail. La vie d'une maîtresse d'école est parfois éprouvante. Je me languis d'être avec toi, au bord de la mer, où nous pourrons causer ensemble librement et construire nos châteaux en Espagne. J'ai travaillé très dur ces temps derniers, pour Jonathan, et j'ai pratiqué la sténographie avec beaucoup d'assiduité. Quand nous serons mariés, je serai utile à Jonathan si je suis capable de sténographier correctement : je pourrai noter ce qu'il veut dire, et le coucher par écrit sur une machine à écrire. Je m'entraîne très dur aussi à la dactylographie. Lui et moi nous nous écrivons parfois en sténo, et il tient un journal de bord sténographié de ses voyages à l'étranger. Quand je serai avec toi je tiendrai aussi le même genre de journal. Je ne veux pas dire l'un de ces journaux que l'on tient « deux-pages-par-semaine-avec-la-page-du-dimanche-cornée", mais un journal où je pourrais écrire à chaque fois que j'en ai envie. Je ne pense pas qu'il puisse être d'un grand intérêt pour les autres, mais il ne leur est pas destiné. Je le montrerai peut-être à Jonathan un jour s'il y a dedans quelque chose qui soit digne d'être partagé, mais ce sera plutôt un cahier d'exercices. J'essaierai de faire ce que je vois faire les femmes journalistes : interviewer et écrire des descriptions, et essayer de retenir les conversations. On m'a dit qu'avec un peu de pratique, on pouvait se souvenir de tout ce qui arrive et de tout ce qu'on entend dans une journée. Enfin, nous verrons bien. Je te parlerai de mes petits projets quand nous nous verrons. Je viens de recevoir quelques lignes rapides de Jonathan, de Transylvanie. Il va bien, et reviendra dans une semaine environ. J'ai hâte d'entendre toutes ses nouvelles. Ce doit être si agréable de découvrir des pays étrangers... Je me demande si nous - je veux dire Jonathan et moi - irons là-bas un jour ensemble. Laisse-moi te dire que je te trouve très injuste quand tu m'accuses de négligence dans notre correspondance. Je t'ai écrit deux fois depuis que nous nous sommes vues, et ta dernière lettre n'était que la seconde. De plus, je n'ai rien à te raconter. Il n'y a vraiment rien d'intéressant pour toi. La ville est très agréable en ce moment, et nous allons beaucoup visiter les galeries d'art, nous promener à pied ou à cheval dans le parc. En ce qui concerne le grand homme aux cheveux bouclés, je suppose qu'il s'agit de l'homme qui m'accompagnait au dernier concert. Quelqu'un a manifestement inventé des histoires. C'était Mister Holmwood. Il vient souvent nous voir, et il s'entend très bien avec Maman; ils ont beaucoup de sujets d'intérêt en

commun. Nous avons rencontré il y a quelque temps un homme qui aurait été parfait pour toi, si tu n'étais pas déjà fiancée à Jonathan. C'est un excellent parti, étant donné qu'il est beau, riche et de haute naissance. C'est un docteur, et des plus intelligents. Imagine-toi qu'il n'a que 29 ans, et il a un immense asile psychiatrique entièrement sous sa responsabilité. Il nous a été présenté par Mister Holmwood, puis il a appelé pour nous voir, et nous rend de fréquentes visites depuis. Je trouve que c'est l'un des hommes les plus déterminés que j'aie jamais vus, et malgré tout d'un calme extrême. Il paraît absolument imperturbable. Je peux imaginer quel merveilleux pouvoir il doit avoir sur ses patients. Il a la curieuse habitude de vous regarder droit dans les yeux comme s'il essayait de lire dans vos pensées. Il le fait beaucoup avec moi, mais je me flatte d'être une dure-à-cuire. Je le sais grâce à mon miroir. Essaies-tu parfois de lire ton propre visage ? Moi je le fais, et je peux te dire que ce n'est pas du tout un exercice inutile, et beaucoup plus difficile que ce que tu pourrais croire sans l'avoir jamais essayé. Il dit que je lui offre un cas curieux d'étude psychologique, et je pense humblement que c'est vrai. Tu sais que je ne m'intéresse pas assez à l'habillement pour être capable de décrire les nouvelles modes. L'habillement est une purge. Voici une expression argotique, mais qu'importe ? (Arthur dit souvent : « qu'importe »).

Voilà, tout est là. Mina, nous nous sommes toujours confié tous nos secrets depuis que nous sommes enfants; nous avons dormi et mangé ensemble, et ri et pleuré; et maintenant, alors que j'ai fini de parler, je voudrais parler encore. Oh Mina, ne peux-tu le deviner ? Je l'aime. J'en rougis alors que j'écris, parce que bien que je pense qu'il m'aime, il ne me l'a jamais formulé. Mais oh, Mina, je l'aime, je l'aime, je l'aime ! Voilà, cela me fait du bien. J'aimerais être avec toi, ma chère, assise près du feu, en chemise de nuit, comme nous en avions l'habitude; et j'essaierais de t'expliquer ce que je ressens. Je ne sais pas comment j'ose écrire ceci, même à toi. J'ai peur de m'arrêter, de crainte de déchirer la lettre, et je ne veux pas m'arrêter, car j'ai une folle envie de tout te raconter. Fais-moi signe immédiatement, et dis-moi ce que tu en penses. Mina, je dois m'arrêter. Bonne nuit. Bénis-moi dans tes prières, et, Mina, prie pour mon bonheur.

Merci, merci, et merci encore pour ta douce réponse ! C'était si agréable de pouvoir tout te dire et d'obtenir ta sympathie.

Mon amie, un bonheur n'arrive jamais seul. Combien de vérité contiennent ces anciens proverbes... Eh bien voilà que moi, qui aurai vingt ans en Septembre, et qui n'ai jamais reçu de véritable proposition de mariage avant aujourd'hui, aujourd'hui j'en ai reçu trois. T'imagines-tu ? Trois demandes en mariage le même jour ! N'est-ce pas abominable ? Je me sens désolée, vraiment sincèrement désolée, pour deux de ces pauvres garçons. Oh, Mina, je suis si heureuse que je ne sais pas quoi faire de moi. Et trois demandes ! Mais, bonté divine, ne le rapporte pas aux filles, ou elles vont développer toutes sortes d'idées extravagantes, et s'imaginer offensées et humiliées si dès leur arrivée à la maison elles n'en reçoivent pas six au minimum. Certaines filles sont si pleines de vanité. Toi et moi, Mina, qui sommes fiancées et qui allons nous établir très bientôt, décemment, comme de vieilles épouses, nous pouvons mépriser la vanité.

Bon, il faut quand même que je te raconte ces trois demandes, mais tu dois garder cela secret, pour tout le monde, à l'exception de Jonathan. Tu le lui diras, parce que moi, à ta place, je le dirais certainement à Arthur. Une femme ne devrait-elle pas tout dire à son mari ? Et je dois être honnête. les femmes leur propre honnêteté - et les femmes, j'en ai bien peur, ne sont pas toujours tout à fait aussi honnêtes qu'elles le devraient.

Enfin, ma chère, le numéro un est arrivé juste avant le déjeuner. Je t'en ai déjà parlé, John Seward, l'homme de l'asile d'aliénés, avec la mâchoire carrée et un beau front. Il avait des dehors très calmes, mais était malgré tout nerveux. Il s'était évidemment chapitré lui-même sur toutes sortes de petites choses, et se remémorait ses propres leçons; mais il réussit presque à s'asseoir sur son chapeau de soie, ce que les hommes ne font pas, en général, quand ils sont calmes, et ensuite pour montrer qu'il était à l'aise, il ne cessa de jouer avec un bistouri, d'une manière qui me fit presque hurler. Il m'a parlé, Mina, de manière extrêmement directe. IL m'a dit combien je lui étais chère, bien qu'il me connaisse si peu, et comment serait sa vie avec moi pour l'aider et le soutenir. Il allait me dire combien je le rendrais malheureux si je me montrais indifférente, mais quand il me vit pleurer il dit qu'il était une brute et ne souhaitait pas ajouter au trouble qui était le mien. Il prit congé et me demanda si je pourrais l'aimer avec le temps; et quand je secouai la tête ses mains tremblèrent, et puis, avec une légère hésitation, il me demanda si mon coeur était déjà pris. Il me le demanda avec beaucoup d'élégance, en disant qu'il ne voulait pas m'arracher une confidence, mais seulement savoir, parce que si le coeur d'une femme était libre, il y avait toujours de l'espoir. Et alors, Mina, je me suis sentie dans l'obligation de lui dire qu'il y avait quelqu'un, en effet. Je ne lui ai dit que cela, et il se leva, avec une apparence de force et de solennité, tandis qu'il me prenait les mains et m'adressait tous ses voeux de bonheur, et me disait que si j'avais un jour besoin d'un ami, je devais le compter parmi mes meilleurs amis. Oh, chère Mina, je ne puis m'empêcher de pleurer, et tu dois m'excuser si la lettre est toute mouillée. Recevoir une demande en mariage est bien sûr très agréable et tout cela, mais ce n'est pas du tout un bonheur de voir un pauvre garçon, dont tu sais qu'il t'aime sincèrement, repartir avec le coeur brisé, et de savoir que, quoi qu'il dise sur le moment, tu es en train de sortir de sa vie. Ma chère, je dois m'interrompre à présent, car j'ai trop de peine malgré tout mon bonheur.

Soir

Arthur vient juste de partir, et je me sens beaucoup mieux que quand je t'ai laissée, et je peux donc continuer à te raconter ma journée. Eh bien, ma chère, le numéro deux est arrivé après le repas. C'est un si brave garçon, un Américain du Texas, et il a l'air si jeune et frais qu'il semble presque impossible qu'il se soit déjà rendu dans tant de lieux et qu'il ait participé à tant d'aventures. Je comprends tellement la pauvre Desdemone, dans l'oreille de laquelle on a versé tant de ces récits dangereux, même s'il s'agissait d'un homme Noir. Je crois que nous les femmes, nous sommes si lâches que nous croyons qu'un homme va nous délivrer de nos peurs, et nous l'épousons. Maintenant je sais ce que je ferais si j'étais un homme et que je voulais séduire une femme... Non, en fait je ne le sais pas, car il y avait Mister Morris qui racontait ses histoires, et Arthur qui n'en racontait aucune, et pourtant - ma chère, je crois que j'ai été trop vite en besogne... J'étais seule lorsque Mister Quincey P. Morris m'a trouvée. Il semble qu'un homme arrive toujours au moment où la jeune fille est seule... Non, c'est faux, car Arthur a essayé de saisir sa chance deux fois, et je l'ai aidé tant que j'ai pu, je n'ai pas honte de le dire maintenant. Je dois te dire avant toute chose que Mister Morris ne parle pas toujours en argot - en fait, il ne parle jamais en argot en présence d'étrangers, tant il est bien élevé et tant ses manières sont exquises - mais il a découvert que cela m'amusait de l'entendre parler l'argot américain, et à chaque fois que j'étais présente, et que personne n'était pas là pour s'en offusquer, il me disait des choses si drôles... Je crains, ma chère, qu'il n'ait cependant tout inventé, car cela convenait trop bien à tout ce qu'il avait à dire. Mais c'est l'une des caractéristiques de l'argot. Je ne sais pas si je parlerai jamais moi-même l'argot; je ne sais si Arthur apprécie cela, étant donné que je ne l'ai jamais entendu en utiliser pour le moment. Enfin, Mr Morris s'assit près de moi et prit l'air le plus heureux, le plus guilleret possible, mais je voyais bien quand même qu'il était très nerveux. Il me prit la main, et me dit très doucement : « Mamzelle Lucy, j'sais bien que je ne suis pas digne de cirer vos bottines, mais si vous restez plantée là en attendant un homme qui le soit, vous risquez bien de prendre racine. Vous ne voudriez pas plutôt vous atteler à ma carriole et nous permettre de faire un bout de chemin, tous les deux ? »

Alors il a dit qu'il avait parlé avec beaucoup de légèreté, et qu'il espérait que ce n'était pas une erreur à un moment aussi crucial pour lui, et que si c'était le cas je la lui pardonnerais. Il avait l'air vraiment sérieux en disant ces mots, et je n'ai pu m'empêcher de me sentir un peu sérieuse aussi. Je sais, Mina, que tu vas me considérer comme une vraie péronnelle, mais je n'ai pu m'empêcher de ressentir une sorte d'exultation à l'idée qu'il était le numéro deux en un seul jour. Et alors, ma chère, avant que je puisse dire un mot, il s'est mis à débiter un torrent intarissable de phrases romantiques, déposant son coeur et son âme à mes pieds. Il était si intense à ce moment que je ne présumerai plus jamais qu'un homme, sous prétexte qu'il est d'humeur gaie par moments, doit être joueur sans cesse, et jamais sérieux. Je crois qu'il a vu quelque chose dans mon visage qui l'a secoué, car il s'est arrêté soudainement et il m'a dit avec une espèce de ferveur virile, qui aurait pu me rendre amoureuse de lui si j'avais été libre:

« Lucy, je sais que vous êtes une fille au coeur pur. Je ne vous parlerais pas ainsi si je n'étais intimement persuadé de votre honnêteté, jusqu'au plus profond de votre âme. Dites-moi, en bonne camarade, y a-t-il quelqu'un d'autre dans vos pensées? Si c'est le cas, je ne vous ennuierai plus le moins du monde, mais je serai pour vous, si vous me laissez le devenir, un ami fidèle. »

Ma chère Mina, pourquoi les hommes sont-ils si nobles quand les femmes sont si peu dignes d'eux ? J'étais là, presque à me moquer de ce véritable gentleman, au coeur si grand. J'ai éclaté en en sanglots - je crains, ma chère, que tu ne trouves cette lettre bâclée à plus d'un titre - et je me suis vraiment sentie mal. Pourquoi ne laisse-t-on pas une jeune fille épouser trois hommes, ou autant de prétendants qui le souhaitent, pour éviter tous ces problèmes ? Mais c'est une hérésie, et je ne dois pas tenir de tels propos. Je suis heureuse d'ajouter que, même en train de pleurer, j'ai été capable de regarder M. Morris droit dans les yeux et de lui dire :

« Oui, il y a quelqu'un que j'aime, bien que ce jeune homme ne m'ait jamais dit encore qu'il m'aimait. » J'ai eu raison de lui parler si ouvertement, parce qu'une lumière est descendue sur son visage, et il a mis mes deux mains dans les siennes - je crois que c'est moi qui les y ai mises - et il a dit avec chaleur :

« Je suis content que vous me disiez cela. Il vaut mieux avoir raté sa chance avec vous que d'avoir encore l'occasion de gagner le coeur de toutes les autres filles du monde. Ne pleurez pas, ma chère. Quant à moi, je suis un dur-à-cuire, et j'affronte tout ceci bravement. Si cet autre garçon ne connaît pas encore son bonheur, eh bien, il devrait s'en enquérir assez rapidement, ou il aura affaire à moi. Jeune fille, votre honnêteté et votre cran ont fait de moi votre ami, ce qui est plus précieux qu'un amant; c'est un amour plus désintéressé. Ma chère, je vais faire une marche bien solitaire entre ici et Kingdom Comme. Ne me donnerez-vous pas un simple baiser ? Ce sera quelque chose qui m'aidera à repousser les ombres, de temps en temps. Vous en avez le droit, vous savez, si vous en avez envie, parce que cet autre gentil gars - il doit être un gentil gars, ma chère, et un gars bien, ou vous ne pourriez pas l'aimer - ne s'est pas encore déclaré. »

Cela m'a tout à fait convaincue, Mina, parce que ces mots envers son rival étaient courageux, et bons, et nobles, n'est-ce pas ? alors je me suis penchée et je l'ai embrassé. Il est resté debout avec mes mains dans les siennes, et alors qu'il se penchait vers mon visage - je crois malheureusement que j'étais en train de devenir écarlate - il a dit :

« Petite fille, je tiens votre main, et vous m'avez embrassé, et si ces choses ne scellent pas notre amitié, rien ne le fera. Merci pour votre douce honnêteté envers moi, et au-revoir. »

Il a lâché ma main, et, prenant son chapeau, est sorti directement de la pièce, sans se retourner, sans une larme ou un frémissement ou une hésitation; et moi je suis en train de pleurnicher comme un bébé. Oh, pourquoi un tel homme doit-il être rendu malheureux lorsqu'il y a un tas de filles autour qui vénéreraient le sol qu'il foule aux pieds ? Je sais que ce serait mon cas si j'étais libre - mais je ne veux pas être libre. Ma chérie, tout ceci me bouleverse, et je sens que je ne peux pas te raconter mon bonheur tout de suite, après t'avoir raconté cela; et je ne veux pas te raconter le numéro trois si je ne suis pas parfaitement heureuse.

PS Oh, à propos du numéro 3 - je n'ai pas besoin de te dire qui est le numéro trois, n'est-ce pas ? En plus, tout était si confus; il n'y a a eu, me semble-t-il, que quelques instants entre son entrée dans la pièce et le moment où il avait ses bras autour de moi et où il m'embrassait. Je suis très, très heureuse, et je ne sais pas ce que j'ai fait pour mériter un tel bonheur. Je peux seulement essayer, à l'avenir, de montrer à Dieu que je ne suis pas ingrate pour toute la bonté qu'Il m'a témoignée en m'envoyant un tel amant, un tel mari, et un tel ami.

Sérieux recul de mon appétit aujourd'hui. Je ne peux pas manger, ni me reposer. Alors je tiens ce journal, plutôt. Depuis la rebuffade que j'ai essuyée hier, j'ai une sorte de sentiment de vide; rien dans le monde ne me paraît suffisamment important pour que je le fasse... Comme je sais que l'unique remède à ces sortes de maux est le travail, je suis descendu voir mes patients, et particulièrement un qui représente un cas d'étude extrêmement intéressant. Il est si singulier que je suis bien déterminé à tout faire pour arriver à le comprendre. Aujourd'hui je me suis approché, plus près que jamais, du coeur de son mystère.

J'ai procédé à un interrogatoire beaucoup plus poussé que les fois dernières, afin de me familiariser avec tous les détails de son délire. Cet interrogatoire, je m'en rends compte à présent, n'était pas dénué d'une certaine cruauté. Comme si je voulais le maintenir dans l'état le plus aigu de sa folie... ce que j'essaie en général d'éviter autant que possible avec les patients. N'est-ce pas une voie capable de mener à l'enfer ? (Nota Bene : dans quelles circonstances est-ce que pourrais m'aventurer dans cette voie infernale ?) Tous les chemins mènent à Rome. Il doit y avoir une récompense au fait de s'aventurer en enfer ! Et s'il y a quelque chose à comprendre, derrière cet instinct étrange, je devrais me lancer sur cette piste sans tarder.

R.M. Renfield, âge 59 ans - Tempérament sanguin; grande force physique; irritable à l'excès; périodes d'abattement, qui s'achèvent en une sorte d'idée fixe que je n'identifie pas clairement. Je pense que le tempérament sanguin lui-même, combiné à une perturbation extérieure, peut avoir de lourdes conséquences mentales; les hommes dans cette configuration sont potentiellement dangereux, et passent souvent à l'acte lorsqu'ils ne sont pas égoïstes. Chez les hommes égoïstes, en effet, la prudence agit comme un bouclier, qui protège à la fois les autres et eux-mêmes : lorsqu'un un homme est centré sur lui- même, la force centripète et la force centrifuge s'équilibrent. Mais quand l'homme se concentre sur un devoir, une cause, ou autre, cette dernière force devient primordiale, et seul un accident ou une série d'accidents peuvent la contrebalancer.

a bien d'autres histoires à raconter, d'autres blessures à panser, et d'autres coups à boire. Est-ce que tu ne voudrais pas continuer la série, demain soir, à mon camp ? Je n'hésite pas à te le demander, puisque je sais qu'une certaine jeune fille est invitée à un certain dîner, et que tu es donc libre. Il n'y aura, en plus de toi, qu'un seul autre convive : notre vieux copain de Corée, Jack Seward. Il vient, aussi, et nous voulons tous les deux noyer notre chagrin dans le vin, et boire, de tout notre coeur, à la santé du plus heureux des hommes, celui qui a gagné le coeur le plus noble que Dieu ait fait, et le plus précieux à conquérir. Nous te promettons un accueil chaleureux, des félicitations fraternelles, et une amitié de fer. Et nous jurerons tous deux de te ramener à la maison si par hasard tu buvais un peu trop en l'honneur d'une certaine paire d'yeux... Viens !
