Je n'enviais pas son sort alors, car je sentais que des millions de bagues de cornaline ne m'auraient pas rendue heureuse après cette punition. Comme c'était bien de la part de M. Laurentz !

– Très bien, répondit tout l'auditoire, très bien !

– Voilà en quoi j'envie les riches, dit Jo. Quand ils ont pu faire dans leur journée une bonne petite chose comme celle-là, ils sont plus heureux que nous.

– Assurément, dit Beth, j'aurais voulu pouvoir être à la place de M. Laurentz dans ce moment- là. »

Les quatre soeurs, ayant raconté chacune leur histoire, prièrent leur mère de leur en dire une à son tour, et celle-ci commença d'un air un peu grave :

« Il parlait avec tant de résignation que je fus honteuse de moi-même qui croyais avoir tant fait en laissant partir mon mari, alors que j'avais gardé tous mes enfants pour me consoler. Je me suis trouvée, à côté de ce vieillard, si riche et si heureuse, que je l'ai remercié de tout mon coeur de la leçon qu'il m'avait donnée sans le savoir.

« J'ai pu, grâce à Dieu, lui faire donner par l'association de l'argent et un bon paquet de provisions pour son voyage.

– Si nous avions été des garçons, dit Beth tout doucement, mère ne nous aurait pas gardées.

– Et elle aurait bien fait, répliqua Meg : « La patrie avant tout ! »

– Racontez-nous encore une autre histoire, mère, dit Jo, après un silence de quelques minutes, une qui ait une morale comme celle-ci. J'aime beaucoup à me les rappeler quand elles sont vraies et qu'elles ne sont pas cachées dans un trop grand sermon. »

Mme Marsch sourit et commença immédiatement :

« Il y avait une fois quatre petites filles qui avaient tous les jours ce qu'il leur fallait en fait de nourriture, de vêtements et encore bien des choses utiles et agréables, de bons parents et des amis qui les aimaient tendrement. Cependant elles n'étaient pas toujours contentes. (Ici les quatre soeurs se jetèrent quelques regards furtifs et continuèrent à coudre très vite.) Ces petites filles désiraient être sages et prenaient beaucoup d'excellentes résolutions, mais elles ne les tenaient pas toujours très bien. Il leur arrivait souvent de dire : « Si nous avions seulement ceci ! » ou bien : « Si nous pouvions seulement faire cela ! » et elles oubliaient alors complètement combien de bonnes choses elles avaient qui, trop souvent, manquent à d'autres, et combien de moments agréables elles pouvaient encore se donner. Elles demandèrent à une vieille femme de leur faire cadeau d'un talisman pour les rendre heureuses, et celle-ci leur dit : « Quand un jour vous ne serez pas contentes, comptez tous vos bonheurs, soit de la veille, soit des jours déjà passés, pensez à tous ceux que l'avenir vous promet encore et soyez reconnaissantes. » (Ici Jo leva vivement la tête comme si elle voulait parler, mais elle se tut, en voyant que l'histoire n'était pas terminée.)

« Elles essayèrent de mettre l'avis à profit, et furent bientôt surprises de voir combien elles étaient mieux partagées que beaucoup d'autres. L'une découvrit que l'argent n'empêchait pas la honte et la douleur d'entrer dans la maison de certains riches ; l'autre, que, quoiqu'elle fût pauvre, elle était bien plus heureuse avec sa jeunesse, sa santé et sa gaieté qu'une certaine vieille dame toujours malade, et par suite toujours impatiente, qu'elle voyait souvent ; la troisième s'avoua que, bien que ce soit peu agréable d'aller gagner son dîner, c'eût été encore bien plus dur de le mendier ; et la quatrième se rendit compte que le plaisir d'avoir une jolie bague de cornaline ne valait pas le témoignage qu'on peut se rendre quand on s'est très bien conduite. Elles prirent donc la résolution de cesser de se plaindre, de jouir des bonheurs qu'elles avaient déjà, et d'essayer de les mériter toujours, de peur qu'ils ne leur fussent enlevés. Je crois, mes chères petites, qu'elles ne furent jamais désappointées ou fâchées d'avoir suivi le conseil de la vieille femme.

– Ce n'est pas très bien, chère maman, de retourner nos paroles contre nous et de nous faire un sermon au lieu de nous raconter une histoire, s'écria Meg.

– J'aime cette espèce de sermon, dit Beth pensivement ; c'est comme ceux que père nous faisait.

– Je crois que je ne me plaignais pas tant que les autres, mais j'y ferai plus attention maintenant, dit Amy, car Susie m'a donné une leçon.

– Nous avions besoin de votre leçon, maman, et nous ne l'oublierons pas, mais si nous l'oublions, vous n'avez qu'à nous dire ce que la vieille Chloé disait dans la Case de l'oncle Tom : « Vous devoir penser à vos bonheurs, enfants !
