La trilogie du Hobbit de Peter Jackson : l'analyse de M. Bobine (2)

Et enfin, scène finale placée sous le signe de l'espoir,

avec en arrière-plan le but final de l'expédition

Si les deux films suivants nous épargnent le même effet miroir,

ls n'en multiplient pas moins les allusions au Seigneur des Anneaux,

entre les clins d'œil en pagaille

les idées visuelles recyclées quasiment telles quelles

et les acteurs d'origine qui renfilent leur costume

dans des scènes absentes du livre

et sensées faire le lien entre les deux trilogies

Esthétiquement aussi,

Le Hobbit et Le seigneur des Anneaux se ressemblent comme deux gouttes d'eau.

Contrairement à George Lucas sur Star Wars,

Peter Jackson s'est entouré de la même équipe artistique :

Andrew Lesnie à la photographie,

Dan Hennah aux décors,

Joe Letteri aux VFX,

John Howe et Alan Lee aux dessins préparatoires, etc, etc.

Et tout ce beau monde joue clairement la carte de la continuité.

Pour beaucoup, Le Hobbit se contente donc de répéter ce qui a été fait dix ans plus tôt,

avec les mêmes batailles, les mêmes legolasseries

et les mêmes choix graphiques, la fraîcheur en moins.

Tout ça paraît d'autant plus dommage que le livre de Tolkien s'adresse avant tout aux enfants.

Il appelait donc naturellement à un traitement différent,

plus léger, plus orienté conte.

Peter Jackson serait donc passé à côté d'une belle occasion

e proposer une version « alternative » de la Terre du Milieu,

et de montrer à quel point il est un artiste plein de ressources.

Le plus rageant dans l'histoire,

c'est que c'est plus ou moins ce qui était prévu au départ !

En 2008, quand le projet d'adaptation du Hobbit commence à se préciser,

Jackson fait savoir qu'il va se contenter cette fois

de la casquette de scénariste et de producteur.

La perspective de replonger dans une aventure filmique

qui va l'occuper à plein temps pendant 5 ans ne l'enthousiasme guère,

pas plus que l'idée de devoir rivaliser avec lui-même.

Pour le remplacer, son choix se fixe sur Guillermo del Toro,

un amoureux des monstres et un geek de compétition,

comme lui, mais aussi un cinéaste doté d'une très forte personnalité.

Avec un créateur d'univers de cet acabit aux commandes,

il ne fait aucun doute que la Terre du Milieu va subir un sacré ravalement de façade.

Écoutez doncce que confiait Del Toro au site Theonering.net en avril 2008,

alors qu'il se mettait tout juste à l'ouvrage :

« Oui, c'est un monde légèrement plus doré que celui du Seigneur des Anneaux,

plus innocent.

Je vais garder ce qui a été posé,

mais le public doit sentir une progression entre Le Hobbit et Le retour du roi.

Il ne faut pas qu'on ait l'impression qu'il s'agit de la même époque

qu'au début de La Communauté de l'anneau.

50 ans dans la Comté, ce ne sont pas 50 années humaines.

Pensez aux changements que notre monde a connus en seulement 7 ou 8 ans.

Ces 50 ans de la Terre du Milieu correspondent donc en réalité

à des décennies d'agitation. ».

Del Toro va bosser pendant un peu plus de deux ans sur le projet,

à la fois sur le scénario avec le trio Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens

et sur les designs avec les illustrateurs John Howe et Alan Lee,

sans oublier les équipes de Weta Workshop et Weta Digital.

Mais en juin 2010, à la surprise générale, il se retire du projet.

La raison officielle : les films sont bloqués au stade de la pré-production

à cause des problèmes financiers de la MGM, détentrice d'une partie des droits,

et Del Toro, artiste boulimique s'il en est,

ne peut pas se permettre de passer une année de plus sans retrouver un plateau de tournage.

Interrogé le lendemain de l'annonce du départ,

Jackson se dit prêt à prendre la relève pour, je cite,

« protéger l'investissement de la Warner ».

Noble sacrifice ? Ça, je vous laisse en juger…

Mais comme il est censé à l'époque réaliser la suite de Tintin,

le studiodresse une liste de remplaçants potentiels

qui comprend, tenez-vous bien,

David Yates, responsable des derniers épisodes de Harry Potter,

David Dobkin, le réalisateur de … euh… Frère Noël

et cette grosse tâche de Brett Ratner.

Ouais, on a vraiment échappé au pire…

Je suis persuadé que Jackson, à un moment,

a dû souffler à la Warner les noms de ses deux protégés

Neil Bloomkamp et Christian Rivers.

Mais c'est vraiment la perspective de son retour derrière la caméra

qui va permettre de décanter la situation

et de greenlighter le projet pour de bon.

Une fois Jackson confirmé au poste de réalisateur,

sa première décision va consister...

à jeter à la poubelle tous les designs de Guillermo del Toro.

Et à réécrire une bonne partie du script tant qu'il y est.

Il explique ses motivations dans cette vidéo pour le site IO9 mise en ligne en 2012.

Dans la vidéo intitulée Battle of the Five Studios,

que je vous encourage à voir dans son intégralité,

la Youtubeuse américaine Lindsay Ellis n'hésite pas

à remettre en question cette version de l'histoire.

Pour elle, Guillermo del Toro s'est fait gentiment pousser vers la sortie

car sa vision ne correspondait pas aux attentes du studio,

et Peter Jackson a reçu comme consigne claire de refaire Le Seigneur des Anneaux.

La Warner serait également à l'origine du découpage tardif en trois volets

pour compenser un manque à gagner.

En effet,

en raison d'un obscur contrat remontant aux années 90,

les tristement célèbres frères Weinstein ont pu réclamer

ne partie des recettes du premier film.

Un montant que le Hollywood Reporter a récemment estimé à 12.5 millions de dollars.

Enfin, le triangle amoureux qui a tant fait hurler les fans aurait été imposé,

non seulement pour appâter le public féminin,

mais aussi pour court-circuiter l'arc narratif de Bilbo et Thorïn

par crainte que celui-ci soit jugé trop « gay » par le public.

Histoire d'en avoir le cœur net,

Lindsay Ellis s'est rendue en Nouvelle-Zélande pour rencontrer l'acteur John Callen,

alias le Nain Oïn.

Et celui-ci confirme en partie ses intuitions.

Alors, je suis le premier à regretter la politique actuelle des studios

qui consiste à dégager les réalisateurs comme es malpropres à la première contrariété.

Mais est-ce vraiment e qui s'est passé sur Le Hobbit ?

Cette image de Peter Jackson transformé en pur yes man

qui laisse ses films se faire saccager par la Warner et ses putains de focus groups

vous semble-t-elle correcte ?

Je veux dire, on parle du gars ui a réussi à mener à terme

un des projets les plus casse-gueule et monumentaux de l'histoire du cinéma.

Ou encore du gars qui n'a pas hésité à traîner New Line en justice

quand il s'était rendu compte qu'on l'avait entourloupé

de quelques millions de dollars sur les recettes du Seigneur des Anneaux.

Et donc, ce modèle d'opiniâtreté serait devenu d'un coup

une espèce de serpillère à la Peyton Reed ?

Du coup, je me demande :

n'y aurait-il pas d'autres raisons qui font que Le Hobbit (le film)

ressemble plus au Seigneur des Anneaux (les films)

qu'au Hobbit (le livre) ?

Et si possible des raisons qui ne relèvent pas de la théorie du complot ?

Essayons voir…

Nous avons vu un peu plus tôt que Le Hobbit avait été

un projet particulièrement compliqué à monter,

notamment en raison du bordel juridique entourant les droits d'adaptation.

Mais la première difficulté concerne le livre lui-même.

Le bon sens voudrait qu'après cet énorme pavé qu'est Le Seigneur des Anneaux,

porter Le Hobbit au cinéma passe pour une promenade de santé.

Ben oui, après tout, il s'agit d'un livre pour enfants, facile à lire,

et dont le récit linéaire se déploie sur moins de 20 chapitres.

Pas de bol, en, fait c'est tout l'inverse !

Dans son aventure, Bilbo est accompagné en permanence de 13 Nains,

que Tolkien caractérise principalement par la couleur de leur capuchon

et l'instrument de musique dont ils jouent.

Rien que leurs noms…

est un gag pour bien nous montrer qu'il est quasiment impossible de les différencier.

Dans le roman,

leurs actions sont très souvent précédées d'un très générique « Les Nains » .

Bah oui, sauf que ça à l'écran, on peut pas !

Faut rentrer dans le détail, et décrire précisément les looks

mais aussi les interactions de chacun des personnages,

ce qui peut très vite tourner au casse-tête.

Dès qu'ils en auront l'occasion,

Peter Jackson et ses co-scénaristes n'hésiteront pas

à scinder le groupe de Nains en deux, histoire de pouvoir souffler un peu.

Le livre Le Hobbit possède une structure épisodique.

Les rencontres et les péripéties s'enchaînent, sans véritable lien entre elles.

Jusqu'au climax où Tolkien tire toutes les ficelles d'un coup.

Gandalf passe son temps à quitter et à retrouver la compagnie,

en jouant les mystérieux quand on lui demande ce qu'il a fait dans l'intervalle.

Le principal méchant de l'histoire, le dragon Smaug,

n'occupe qu'une petite place dans le récit et se fait buter par un personnage secondaire.

Quant à la fameuse bataille finale,

elle reste en grande partie hors champ

puisque notre ami Bilbo se fait assommer au beau milieu des hostilités !

Repris tel quel sur un écran de cinéma,

je pense qu'on tiendrait là une des ellipses les plus frustrantes de l'histoire du cinéma !

Bref, pour pouvoir traduire le roman en images,

il n'y a pas vraiment d'autre choix que de le trahir,

et cela en faisant à peu près l'inverse du travail d'adaptation habituel :

c'est-à-dire ajouter de la matière au lieu d'en ôter.

Ainsi, les événements rapportés à posteriori dans le livre

ont maintenant lieu sous nos yeux,

comme les errances de Gandalf ou la fameuse Bataille des cinq armées.

L'équipe de scénaristes décide également de développer

certains personnages à peine esquissés dans le livre

D'autres, tout juste évoqués le temps d'une phrase, prennent corps,

comme Radagast le Brun ou l'orque Azog,

propulsé grand méchant de la trilogie

Christopher Tolkien a beau clamer partout

que Peter Jackson a « éviscéré » l'œuvre de son père,

cette volonté légitime d'étoffer la trame du Hobbit

se veut aussi respectueuse que possible du matériau de base.

Les ajouts qui ne proviennent pas du Seigneur des Anneaux,

de ses appendices ou encore des Contes et légendes inachevées

se comptent finalement sur les doigts d'une main.

Celui qui a le plus exaspéré les puristes est sans conteste l'elfe Tauriel,

un personnage créé de toutes pièces

et placé au centre d'un triangle amoureux effectivement bien relou.

Après, je peux comprendre que l'absence totale de persos féminins

dans le livre de Tolkien ait pu poser problème aux scénaristes,

surtout quand les plus impliquées dans l'écriture sont elles-mêmes des femmes.

Quant à la place hallucinante prise par le personnage d'Alfrid dans le dernier film,

là j'avoue j'ai pas d'explications.

J'imagine qu'on ne peut pas réaliser un film intitulé Bad Taste,

sans en faire preuve soi-même une fois de temps de temps…

Mis à part ce genre de détails malheureux,

la logique derrière le travail d'adaptation ne me semble pas particulièrement aberrante.

Et elle n'est pas sans rappeler la mise à jour que Tolkien lui-même a fait subir au Hobbit,

quand il a été question de lui donner une suite.

Le chapitre 5 du livre, Énigmes dans l'obscurité,

qui narre la rencontre entre Bilbo et Gollum,

a en effet été entièrement réécrit 15 ans après la première publication

pour mieux « matcher » avec Le Seigneur des Anneaux.

Le vénérable professeur a même été tenté de repasser sur TOUT le texte

ar le ton enfantin lui semblait en décalage complet

avec le reste de ses écrits consacrés à la Terre du Milieu.

Mais il s'est très vite ravisé sur les sages conseils de son entourage

Quand on y réfléchit,

une bonne partie des choix dramaturgiques qui ont fait grincer des dents sur Le Hobbit

étaient déjà au programme du Seigneur des Anneaux.

Comme montrer en full frontal des passages ellipsés par Tolkien.

Ou « gonfler » des personnages inexistants dans les livres

pour augmenter le taux de présence féminine.

A l'époque, on trouvait déjà un triangle amoureux inter-espèces

qui ne menait pas bien loin

Et des intrigues secondaires étaient bouclées à la faveur des versions longues.
