Cœur de tonnerre de Michael Apted, l'analyse de M. Bobine (2)

lui écope de deux peines consécutives de prison à perpétuité

et est incarcéré au pénitencier de Leavenworth au Kansas.

Depuis 1976,

les avocats de Peltier ont multiplié les recours pour tenter de faire réviser son procès.

Selon eux, leur client a été condamné

sur la base de témoignages fallacieux obtenus sous la pression

et de preuves matérielles volontairement falsifiées par le FBI.

En tant que membre actif de l'AIM, Peltier faisait en effet un coupable idéal,

permettant de jeter l'opprobre sur le mouvement au sein de l'opinion publique.

Au fil des années, plusieurs personnalités et organismes se sont exprimée

en faveur de la libération de Leonard Peltier :

Nelson Mandela, le Dalaï-Lama, Mère Teresa, l'archevêque Desmond Tutu,

le prix Nobel de la paix Rigoberta Menchú, la styliste Vivien Westwood,

Amnesty International, le Haut-Commissariat des Nations unies aux droits de l'homme,

l'American Association for Justice, etc.

De nombreuses chansons lui ont été consacrées, signées Rage Against the Machine,

U2, Steven Van Zandt, Buffy Sainte-Marie

et même notre Renaud national.

Revenons-en à Coeur de tonnerre.

Puisqu'ils se contentent de traiter en filigrane de l'affaire Leonard Peltier,

on pourrait en déduire que les auteurs du film, Michael Apted et John Fusco en tête,

prennent moins ouvertement fait et cause que les chansonniers précédemment cités.

Et pourtant, ce serait faire là une monumentale erreur comme dirait l'autre !

Alors Michael Apted est-il cinéaste militant ?

L'idée peut sembler bizarre, surtout pour ceux qui le connaissent avant tout

comme le réalisateur d'un James Bond pas terrible de l'ère Brosnan,

du 3e volet pas terrible de la franchise Narnia

et de quelques thrillers du dimanche soir plus ou moins regardables.

Mais si on remonte un peu le fil de sa filmographie,

on tombe rapidement sur quelques jolies pièces à conviction.

Comme Affaire non classée, qui pointe du doigt le cynisme des constructeurs automobiles,

prêts à faire passer la recherche de profits au détriment de vies humaines.

Ou encore Gorilles dans la brume qui, en plus d'offrir un rôle en or à Sigourney Weaver,

a beaucoup fait pour sensibiliser l'opinion sur le sort des gorilles des montagnes,

victimes du braconnage en Afrique centrale.

Quelques années plus tôt,

la carrière américaine de Michael Apted avait démarré sur les chapeaux de roues

avec le film Nashville Lady.

7 nominations aux Oscars, statuette de la meilleure actrice pour Sissy Spacek,

on a connu pire comme débuts…

Ce biopic de la chanteuse de country Loretta Lynn,

élevée dans une famille de mineurs de fond du Kentucky,

va donner l'occasion au réalisateur anglais de livrer

une peinture très juste de la vie dans Appalaches,

qui n'a rien pas grand chose à envier aux réserves indiennes.

Nashville Lady fait aujourd'hui parti de la liste

des 800 œuvres inscrites au National Film Registry de la bibliothèque du Congrès

pour son “importance culturelle, historique et esthétique”.

Avant cela, Michael Apted s'était fait une belle réputation en Grande-Bretagne

avec la série documentaire Up au concept assez étonnant.

Diffusée à raison d'un épisode tous les 7 ans,

celle-ci se propose de suivre la vie de 14 Anglais venus d'horizons divers.

L'aventure a commencé en 1964, quand ils n'avaient que 7 ans.

Le dernier volet en date, diffusé en 2019, nous les fait retrouver à l'âge de 63 ans.

Michael Apted a participé au choix des enfants sur le premier épisode,

avant de passer réalisateur à partir du second…

et de changer complètement de problématique.

“7 Up était le film de Paul Almond.

Mais ce qui l'intéressait, c'était de faire un beau film sur l'âge de raison.

Alors que moi, j'avais quelque chose de plus vicieux en tête.

Je voulais parler de ces gamins qui ont tout tandis que d'autres n'ont rien”.

En nous faisant suivre dans les épisodes suivants la trajectoire de ces enfants devenus adultes,

puis parents, puis grands-parents,

Michael Apted se fera un plaisir de montrer que l'égalité des chances

reste encore et toujours une illusion au sein du système de classes britannique.

L'année 1991 a été particulièrement chargée pour Michael Apted

puisqu'en plus du tournage de Coeur de tonnerre et du 5e épisode de Up,

il a signé un documentaire destiné cette fois aux salles de cinéma.

Son titre : Incident à Oglala.

Son sujet : l'affaire Leonard Peltier justement.

Pour l'occasion, il a pu compter sur un soutien de poids en la personne de Robert Redford,

qui office à la fois en tant que producteur exécutif et narrateur du film.

Connu pour ses nombreux engagements,

Redford avait déjà fait campagne pour Leonard Peltier dans les années 80.

Apted, lui, s'est pris de passion pour le sujet plus tardivement,

à l'occasion de ses recherches pour Coeur de tonnerre.

Persuadé, comme beaucoup d'autres avant lui, d'être face à une grave erreur judiciaire,

il convoque devant sa caméra de nombreux protagonistes de l'histoire,

qui mettent en lumière les nombreuses aberrations du dossier,

ainsi que son caractère éminemment politique.

L'un des intervenants les plus éloquents est sans conteste John Trudell,

qui était à la tête de l'American Indian Movement à l'époque des événements.

Rien de bien surprenant quand on sait que le monsieur,

en plus de ses activités militantes, était aussi poète, romancier et chanteur.

C'est lui que Michael Apted a choisi pour incarner dans Coeur de tonnerre

le fameux Jimmy Deux Coups d'Oeil.

Un personnage bâti, comme on l'a dit, sur Leonard Peltier,

mais aussi sur John Trudell lui-même.

Tous deux partagent le même passé militaire au Vietnam et les mêmes méthodes de contestation.

Le dernier acte de Trudell en tant que président de l'AIM a en effet consisté à brûler

le drapeau américain devant le siège du FBI à Washington en janvier 1979.

Le lendemain, toute sa famille disparaissait brutalement dans un incendie très suspect.

Un crime d'État ni plus ni moins selon Trudell, destiné à le réduire au silence

Autre exemple de “double casting” entre Coeur de tonnerre et Incident à Oglala :

c'est le scénariste du film, John Fusco,

qui s'est chargé d'écrire le texte de Robert Redford sur le documentaire.

Bien que l'expression n'existait pas encore à l'époque,

on pourrait même parler de stratégie Cross-Media avec un objectif final bien défini :

dénoncer et faire connaître au plus grand nombre

les injustices subies par Leonard Peltier et les indiens d'Amérique en général.

Le Conseil Tribal de la réserve de Pine Ridge a visiblement apprécié la démarche d'Apted

puisque le cinéaste a été autorisé à planter ses caméras partout où il le voulait.

Y compris dans des lieux sacrés pour les Sioux Oglala,

comme le cimetière de Wounded Knee

ou Stronghold Table, théâtre privilégié de la Danse des Esprits.

Sans doute espéraient-ils que le “double programme” concocté par Apted

aiderait à faire bouger les choses.

Après tout, trois ans plus tôt, en 1988, le documentaire Le dossier Adams

alias The Thin Blue Line de Errol Morris avait permis

d'innocenter un homme, condamné à la prison à perpétuité

pour un crime qu'il n'avait pas commis.

L'année même de la sortie de Coeur de tonnerre,

l'impact du JFK d'Oliver Stone a été tel

que les membres du Congrès américain ont pondu dans la foulée

une loi accélérant considérablement la déclassification

de toutes les archives liées à l'assassinat du Président Kennedy.

En certaines occasions, l'art peut donc changer le monde.

Mais ça n'aura pas été le cas avec Coeur de tonnerre.

Comme on l'a dit plus tôt, le film a été un échec cinglant en salles.

Et malgré ses deux nominations aux Political Film Society Awards,

il n'a pas connu de second souffle dans les années suivantes, bien au contraire.

Pour la diffusion du film à la télévision en 1995,

Tristar n'a pas hésité à pratiquer 270 coupes

pour retirer 22 minutes au montage initial.

Comme si ça ne suffisait pas, pour passer sous la barre des 90 minutes

l'image a été accélérée pas seulement sur le générique

mais carrément sur tout le film.

En découvrant le massacre,

Michael Apted va saisir la Directors Guild of America

dont il deviendra plus tard le président.

Tout ce qu'il obtiendra au final,

c'est le droit de remplacer son nom dans les crédits par le fameux pseudo Alan Smithee.

L'année suivante, en 1996,

Bill Clinton, tout juste réélu président des États-Unis,

avait promis qu'il “n'oublierait pas” Leonard Peltier au cours de son second mandat.

Au moment de quitter ses fonctions, il prendra finalement le parti du FBI.

Depuis, aucun de ses successeurs à la Maison-Blanche

n'a souhaité exercer son droit de grâce.

Leonard Peltier est aujourd'hui âgé de 77 ans

et a passé plus de la moitié de sa vie derrière les barreaux.

Il est considéré par ses défenseurs

comme le plus ancien prisonnier politique américain.

Après Coeur de tonnerre,

le triste sort des Indiens d'Amérique n'a pas été un sujet très prisé par Hollywood.

Il faudra attendre une petite quinzaine d'années

pour que le fameux massacre de Wounded Knee ait de nouveau droit aux honneurs de la fiction.

En l'occurrence un téléfilm de luxe pour HBO.

Perso, je retiendrais surtout le très solide Wind River, sorti sur les écrans en 2017.

Il s'agit du premier long-métrage du scénariste Taylor Sheridan,

qui continue de creuser son thème de prédilection : la Frontière,

et plus précisément ce qu'il en reste à l'époque moderne.

L'intrigue de Wind River n'est pas sans rappeler celle du film de Michael Apted.

Elle démarre par la mort violente d'une jeune indienne

dans une réserve paumée au fin fond du Wyoming.

Et on y suit une jeune agent du FBI qui va voir toutes ses certitudes bousculées,

au contact notamment de… notre copain Graham Greene.

Le carton qui clôt le film vient rappeler que le racisme systémique

à l'encontre des Native Americans reste toujours d'actualité.

Ces thématiques devraient être au centre du prochain Scorsese, attendu courant 2022 :

Killers of the Flower Moon.

Cette fois, l'histoire nous entraîne dans l'Oklahoma des années 20,

mais il y est encore question de meurtres d'indiens,

d'investigations du FBI et de gisements qui attirent toutes les convoitises.

Pour l'occasion, Scorsese dispose d'un budget maousse de 200 millions de dollars

et il est parvenu à réunir pour la première fois ses deux acteurs fétiches :

Leonardo Di Caprio et Robert de Niro,

qui était, rappelons-le, le producteur de Coeur de tonnerre.

Bref, tout est réuni pour que le père Marty nous ponde encore un grand film.

Si vous êtes aussi impatient que moi, un bon moyen de calmer l'attente,

c'est de redonner une chance à ce certes plus modeste mais très attachant Coeur de tonnerre

et d'enchaîner avec Incident à Oglala, son indispensable complément.
