Hi! I'm Roy,

and today I'm going to tell you the difference between

two words that are often confused: hear and listen. Sıklıkla karıştırılan iki kelime: duymak ve dinlemek.

'Hear' is the verb we use to talk about the ability. 'Duymak', yetenek hakkında konuşmak için kullandığımız fiildir.

It doesn't mean that we want to hear something. Bu, bir şey duymak istediğimiz anlamına gelmez.

It's about sounds coming to our ears. Kulağımıza gelen seslerle ilgili.

I can hear the air conditioning. Я слышу звук кондиционера. Klimanın sesini duyabiliyorum.

It doesn't mean that I want to hear it, but I can. Bu, duymak istediğim anlamına gelmiyor ama duyabilirim.

The verb 'listen' is often followed by the preposition 'to'. "Dinlemek" fiilini genellikle "etmek" edatı takip eder.

We use this verb when we're paying attention

or focusing on sounds. ya da seslere odaklanmak.

I hope you're listening to me. Надеюсь, вы меня слушаете.

That means I hope you're paying attention. Yani umarım dikkatini veriyorsundur.

Compare these two sentences: Bu iki cümleyi karşılaştırın:

I can hear some music (somewhere). (Bir yerlerde) müzik sesi duyabiliyorum.

I am listening to some music. Я слушаю музыку. Biraz müzik dinliyorum.

I'm listening to a song that I want to listen to. Ich höre ein Lied, das ich hören möchte. Я слушаю песню, которую хочу слушать. Dinlemek istediğim bir şarkıyı dinliyorum.

Anyway, I've got to go. Wie auch immer, ich muss los. Neyse, gitmem gerek.

I can hear my boss calling me. Я слышу, как мой босс зовет меня. Patronumun beni çağırdığını duyabiliyorum.
