1.02 (R) How to navigate the MOOC

Welcome to the Positive Psychiatry and Mental Health MOOC! The course contains 46 video lectures, containing a wide range of topics relating to positive mental health, mental illness and distress. The videos range from 3-10 minutes in length, with a total of around four hours viewing for the course (less than one hour per module). There are also a range of recommended readings and links to further information. As there is much content to get through in the next couple of weeks, here are some advice from us on how to navigate the course: Recommended study style In order to get the most out of this course, we recommend you spend one week per module, watch all the lectures in the order that they appear, provide responses to the in-video questions and complete the set assessments. Doing the course in this way will reinforce your learning, enable you to reflect on what you have learned and how the course content can be applied in real-life situations. However, it is not compulsory to view all the lectures in order to complete the course. Some topics may be more appealing or relevant depending on your circumstances. So for those of you who are time poor, you may wish to be more selective about the course content. We suggest you choose a minimum of 3-4 lectures per module in order to cover the topics adequately. A note on the content of the lectures Some of the video lectures will contain material depicting mental illness and distress, including graphic artwork images. It is possible that some people may find parts of the course upsetting. Lectures are not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Always seek advice from a medical practitioner or mental health provider if you have any concerns or questions regarding your own mental health, or if you experience severe distress as a result of participating in the course. Navigating readings As you will see, there are plenty of readings as part of this Course. For some lectures, you will be provided essential readings. These readings are there to complement your understanding of concepts addressed in the respective lectures. For some lectures, you will be provided recommended resources. These websites, videos, readings, apps etc suggested by us are there for you to explore at your own time if you choose to do so. We encourage you to take advantage of the essential readings and recommended resources, along with the module reading lists, as these will help you complete your graded assessments and engage in the activities. For each video lecture that cites research studies and statistics, you will find a reference list document. You are not expected to read all the references listed - they are provided for those of you who wish to seek further information about the studies cited in the videos. We hope that you will find the course beneficial and enjoyable. Mental health is everyone's business.
