This exercise involves playing an “altruistic prank” on someone while adhering to the “three rules of giving” (contain cost of giving, make it fun for both parties, and register the impact), and then recording how one felt as a result. This is a peer-graded assignment. Assignment less In this exercise, your task is to perpetrate an act of “creative altruism” (detailed instructions can be found in Week 3, Video 10). After you finish your act, you will need to answer four questions for the report: What was your idea/plan? How did you execute the idea? Did you stick to the "3 rules for giving" (contain cost of giving, have fun, and register impact)? If not, why not? What did the recipient feel? In answering this question focus on what the recipient said/did when he/she experienced your act. How did it make you feel? What effect did the entire exercise have on you? Here's the link to the website on which you can find the detailed instructions for this exercise. Review Criteria less This peer reviewed assignment is worth 10 points in total. Your work will be graded on the following criteria: Did your report contain a description of your idea and your plan? – 4 points Did your report contain a description of how you executed your idea and whether or not you managed to adhere to the "3 rules for giving" (contain cost of giving, have fun, and register impact)? – 1 point Did you describe how the recipient felt? And in answering this question, did you describe what the recipient said/did when he/she experienced your act? – 1 point Does your report discuss how the whole experience made you feel at various points (particularly when perpetrating your act and seeing the impact on the recipient)? – 4 points If the student answered the 1st question, give him/her 4 points. You need to get a pretty good idea of what the student's creative altruism idea was; if you were unclear, you can take off 1 point. But so long as the student has written something that looks like an idea for this exercise, he/she should get at least 2 points. If the student has answered the 2nd question (even if the answer is brief and they did not stick to the 3 rules of giving), give him/her 1 point. If the student answered the 3rd question (even if it is just one word—e.g., “joyful”), given him/her 1 point. If the student answered the 4th question give him/her 4 points, even if he/she did not feel good after the exercise. The answer needs to be elaborate enough for you to feel that you have a good idea of how the student felt after the exercise. So, a one-word answer (“happy”) won't suffice; the student needs to elaborate on how at least two components of the exercise (perpetrating the act, and seeing the impact on the beneficiary) had on him/her. Ideally, the student has to elaborate on why he/she felt that way. But so long as the student has written something that conveys at least a brief idea of how the exercise made him/her feel, give at least 2 points. If you happened to deduct points for any of the components, please explain your reasons by answering the relevant questions below: Did the report mention the creative altruism idea/plan? (E.g., You could say, “I deducted 2 points because it wasn't clear what your idea/plan was.”) How did you execute the idea? Did you stick to the "3 rules for giving" (contain cost of giving, have fun, and register impact)? If not, why not? (E.g., you could say, “I deducted 1 point because you did not mention whether or not you executed your plan and how it went.”) What did the recipient feel? In answering this question focus on what the recipient said/did when he/she experienced your act. (E.g., you could say, “I deducted 1 point because there was no mention of how the recipient felt.”) How did it make you feel? What effect did the entire exercise have on you? (E.g., you could say, “I deducted 2 points because you did not elaborate on how you felt at each stage of this exercise.”)
