CHAPTER 15 - Dr. Seward's Diary, part 14

Arthur stood up.

"Professor, are you in earnest, or is it some monstrous joke? Pardon me, I see that you are in earnest. " He sat down again, but I could see that he sat firmly and proudly, as one who is on his dignity. There was silence until he asked again, "And when in the tomb? " "To open the coffin. "This is too much! " he said, angrily rising again. "I am willing to be patient in all things that are reasonable, but in this, this desecration of the grave, of one who . " He fairly choked with indignation. The Professor looked pityingly at him.

"If I could spare you one pang, my poor friend," he said, "God knows I would. But this night our feet must tread in thorny paths, or later, and for ever, the feet you love must walk in paths of flame! " Arthur looked up with set white face and said, "Take care, sir, take care! "Would it not be well to hear what I have to say? " said Van Helsing. "And then you will at least know the limit of my purpose. Shall I go on? " "That's fair enough," broke in Morris. After a pause Van Helsing went on, evidently with an effort, "Miss Lucy is dead, is it not so? Yes! Then there can be no wrong to her. But if she be not dead . . " Arthur jumped to his feet, "Good God! " he cried. "What do you mean? Has there been any mistake, has she been buried alive?

" He groaned in anguish that not even hope could soften. "I did not say she was alive, my child. I did not think it. I go no further than to say that she might be UnDead. " "UnDead! Not alive! What do you mean?

Is this all a nightmare, or what is it? " "There are mysteries which men can only guess at, which age by age they may solve only in part. Believe me, we are now on the verge of one. But I have not done. May I cut off the head of dead Miss Lucy? "

Arthur stood up. Arthur levantou-se.

"Professor, are you in earnest, or is it some monstrous joke? "Professor, está a falar a sério, ou é uma piada monstruosa? Pardon me, I see that you are in earnest. "  He sat down again, but I could see that he sat firmly and proudly, as one who is on his dignity. " Sentou-se de novo, mas eu vi que se sentou com firmeza e orgulho, como quem está na sua dignidade. There was silence until he asked again, "And when in the tomb? " Fez-se silêncio até que ele voltou a perguntar: "E quando no túmulo? " "To open the coffin. "Para abrir o caixão. "This is too much! "Isto é demasiado! " he said, angrily rising again. ", disse ele, levantando-se de novo com raiva. "I am willing to be patient in all things that are reasonable, but in this, this desecration of the grave, of one who . "Estou disposto a ser paciente em tudo o que é razoável, mas nisto, nesta profanação da sepultura, de alguém que . "  He fairly choked with indignation. " Quase se engasgou de indignação. The Professor looked pityingly at him. O Professor olhou-o com pena.

"If I could spare you one pang, my poor friend," he said, "God knows I would. "Se eu pudesse poupar-te a uma dor, meu pobre amigo", disse ele, "Deus sabe que o faria. But this night our feet must tread in thorny paths, or later, and for ever, the feet you love must walk in paths of flame! " Mas esta noite os nossos pés devem pisar caminhos espinhosos, ou mais tarde, e para sempre, os pés que tu amas devem andar em caminhos de chamas! " Arthur looked up with set white face and said, "Take care, sir, take care! Artur olhou para cima com a cara branca e disse: "Tenha cuidado, senhor, tenha cuidado! "Would it not be well to hear what I have to say? "Não seria bom ouvir o que tenho para dizer? " said Van Helsing. " disse Van Helsing. "And then you will at least know the limit of my purpose. "E então, pelo menos, saberás o limite do meu objetivo. Shall I go on? " Devo continuar? " "That's fair enough," broke in Morris. "Isso é justo", interrompeu Morris. After a pause Van Helsing went on, evidently with an effort, "Miss Lucy is dead, is it not so? Após uma pausa, Van Helsing prosseguiu, evidentemente com um esforço: "Miss Lucy está morta, não é verdade? Yes! Then there can be no wrong to her. But if she be not dead . Mas se ela não estiver morta . . " Arthur jumped to his feet, "Good God! Artur pôs-se de pé: "Santo Deus! " he cried. "What do you mean? Has there been any mistake, has she been buried alive? Terá havido algum engano, terá ela sido enterrada viva?

"  He groaned in anguish that not even hope could soften. " Ele gemeu com uma angústia que nem mesmo a esperança poderia suavizar. "Umudun bile yumuşayamayacağı bir acı içinde inledi. "I did not say she was alive, my child. "Eu não disse que ela estava viva, minha filha. I did not think it. I go no further than to say that she might be UnDead. " Não vou mais longe do que dizer que ela pode ser uma não-morta. " "UnDead! Not alive! What do you mean?

Is this all a nightmare, or what is it? " Isto é tudo um pesadelo, ou o que é? " "There are mysteries which men can only guess at, which age by age they may solve only in part. "Há mistérios que os homens apenas adivinham e que, com o passar dos anos, só conseguem resolver em parte. Believe me, we are now on the verge of one. Acreditem, estamos agora à beira de um. But I have not done. Mas eu não o fiz. May I cut off the head of dead Miss Lucy? " Posso cortar a cabeça da falecida Miss Lucy? "
