A wild taxi ride from Kosovo to Bosnia

We needed a bus, but there were not any leaving. We didn't want to wait another day, for the next one to depart, as we had to get to Bosnia. Why we hadn't planned in advance, I couldn't tell you. But here we were, feeling stuck, yet needing a way out. Our friend negotiated a good price with a taxi driver and we set out on an overnight road trip. Our driver seemed to be in a hurry, because he drove fast, even around sharp mountain curves. There were times when we would look at each other like, are we going to survive this? What are we doing? Is this crazy? I have never since been on another taxi ride like this one, and I don't have any plans to do it ever again. We approached the border crossing to Bosnia and you could cut the tension with a knife. It was dark, which of course makes everything 10 times scarier. The taxi driver and the border guard were having what appeared to us as a heated discussion. It seemed that the taxi driver didn't have the right papers to cross into Bosnia, but we couldn't understand a word of either language. We sat there, waiting and hoping. Five minutes passed by, then 10, then 20. “Would we be able to pass through?” we thought. Finally, the border guard suddenly let us through into Bosnia. Our taxi driver hit the gas. We all breathed sighs of relief. We pulled unto the empty streets of Sarajevo at 2am. Our contact rode up on his motorcycle (like out of a movie) to lead us to his house. It's all a bit of a blur if I'm being honest, but I remember being so relieved, so happy to be out of the car and to be able to stretch my legs on solid ground.
