In May 1946, the first post-war parliamentary elections were held, which the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia won in the Czech lands with 40% of the vote.

Not only did it get the most out of the post-war growth in popularity of the left and the Soviet Union as the victor over Nazism, but thanks to promises of further land reform, it won a majority of the votes of the rural population. In Slovakia, on the other hand, the Democratic Party clearly won with 62% of the vote and the Communists only 30%, but despite this failure, the Communists together won 38% of the vote and became the strongest party in the country. The result of the election was reflected in the composition of the government. The Communists not only retained influential positions in the Ministries of the Interior, Information and Agriculture, but also won the seat of the Prime Minister, in which the party's chairman, Klement Gottwald, took the seat. A secret member of the Communist Party, General Ludvík Svoboda, became the Minister of Defense and externally acted as a non-partisan.

V únoru 1948 vrcholí vládní krize v Hradeckém programu KSČ. Im Februar 1948 erreichte die Regierungskrise im Programm der Kommunistischen Partei in Hradec Králové ihren Höhepunkt. In February 1948, the government crisis culminated in the Hradec Králové program of the Communist Party. Program požaduje další znárodňování a rozparcelování statků nad 50 ha. The program requires further nationalization and subdivision of farms over 50 ha. The Communists also continue to penetrate important positions in the power forces (8 members of the SNB leadership were replaced by the Communists). Na protest proti tomu podává většina 20. února nekomunistických ministrů demisi. Die meisten der nichtkommunistischen Minister traten am 20. Februar aus Protest zurück. In protest, a majority of non-communist ministers resign on February 20. Například Jan Masaryk a Ludvík Svoboda zůstávají ve vládě. For example, Jan Masaryk and Ludvík Svoboda remain in government. The resigners assumed that President Beneš would not accept the resignation or would appoint a new caretaker government. To se ale nestalo a prezident 25. února demisi přijal. But that did not happen, and the president accepted his resignation on February 25. V těchto pěti dnech komunisté vyvíjeli na prezidenta silný nátlak organizováním demonstrací, stávek a vyzbrojováním Lidových milicí. During these five days, the Communists put strong pressure on the president by organizing demonstrations, strikes, and arming the People's Militia. A new government of the National Front was formed, headed by Klement Gottwald. The only truly non-communist minister in this government, Jan Masaryk, died under unclear circumstances.
