What is face?
面子 ，最 简单 的 意思 就是 ：一个 人 的 脸 ，一个 人 的face。
Face, the simplest meaning is: a person's face, a person's face.
但是 在 中国 文化 里 ，面子 不仅仅 是 “脸 ” 的 意思。
But in Chinese culture, face means more than just "face".
我们 常常 说 ，一个 人 “有 面子 ” ，或者 一个 人 “没面子” 。
We often say that a person "has face", or a person "has no face".
这是 什么 意思 呢？
What does it mean?
别 担心 ，现在 ，我会 给 大家 两个 例子 ，给 大家 解释 ：什么 是 有 面子 ，什么 是 没面子。
Don't worry, now, I will give you two examples to explain to you: what is face and what is no face.
什么 是 有 面子？
What is having a face?
如果说 ，你 是 一个 中国 的 爸爸 或者 一个 中国 的 妈妈 ，你 有 一个 孩子。
If you are a Chinese father or a Chinese mother, you have a child.
这个 孩子 去 了 中国 最好 的 大学 ——北京大学。
This kid went to the best university in China - Peking University.
你 告诉 你 的 亲戚 ，或者 告诉 你 的 同事 ，说 ： “我 的 孩子 去 北京大学 了” 。
You tell your relatives, or tell your colleagues, "My child has gone to Peking University".
你 的 亲戚 和 朋友 ，他们 都 会 说 ： “你 的 孩子 真 厉害 ，因为 他 去 中国 最好 的 大学 ——北京大学 了！
Your relatives and friends, they will all say: "Your child is amazing, because he went to the best university in China - Peking University!

这 就是 有 面子 和 没面子 的 区别。
That's the difference between having face and having no face.
我们 觉得 自己 有 面子 ，因为 大家 都 觉得 我们 很 厉害 ，大家 都 羡慕 我们 ，envy 我们。
We feel that we have a face, because everyone thinks we are very good, everyone envy us, envy us.
我们 觉得 自己 没面子 ，是因为 大家 觉得 我们 不太 厉害。
We feel ashamed of ourselves because people think we are not very good.

在 英语 里面 ，面子 可以 被 翻译成 ：prestige，dignity，或者honor。
In English, face can be translated as prestige, dignity, or honor.

面子 是 中国 人 的 传统。
Face is a Chinese tradition.
很 久 ，很久以前 ，中国 人 就 喜欢 面子 ，中国 人 就 知道 要 面子。

比如说 ，两千年 前 ，在 中国 的 秦朝 Qin Dynasty，有 一个 国王 ，他 的 名字 叫 项羽。

Everyone said to Xiang Yu: "You have been defeated, go home by boat!
以后 我们 再 出来 打仗。
We'll go out to fight later.
” 但是 项羽 说 ：“我 不能 回家 ，因为 我 被 打败 了。
" But Xiang Yu said, "I can't go home because I was defeated."
如果 我 回家 ，我 怎么 有 面子 看 我 的 家人 呢？
If I go home, how can I have the face to look after my family?
”所以 最后 ，他 在 河边 自杀 了。
"So in the end, he committed suicide by the river.
你 看 ，对 中国 人 来说 ，面子 真的 非常 重要。
You see, for the Chinese, face is really very important.
在 中文 里 ，我们 也 有 一句 俗语 ，一句 idiom，关于 面子。
In Chinese, we also have a saying, an idiom, about face.
这句 俗语 就是 “死要面子 活受罪” 。
This proverb is "to die to save face and live to suffer".
諺にもあるように、「面目を保つためには、罪を背負って生きなければならない」。
我 重复 ， “死要面子 活 受罪” 。
I repeat, "To die for face and to suffer".
这句 话 什么 意思？
What does this sentence mean?
这句 话 是 说 ，一个人 太 要 面子 了 ，一个人 太 喜欢 面子 了。
This sentence means that a person wants face too much, and a person likes face too much.
比如说 ，我们 继续 刚才 的 故事。
For example, let's continue the story just now.
如果 你 的 孩子 最后 还是 决定 不去 北京大学 ，他 还是 决定 去 找 工作。
If your child finally decides not to go to Peking University, he still decides to find a job.
你 很 没面子 ，但是 你 不 告诉 别人。
You are embarrassed, but you don't tell others.

If you want to go to school, you go to school.
如果 你 想 工作 ，你 就 工作。
If you want to work, you work.
如果 你 想 做 一件 事情 ，你 就 去 做。
If you want to do something, you do it.
你 不 需要 想 ，我 有没有 面子 ，我 的 爸爸妈妈 有没有 面子 ，等等。
You don't need to think that I have no face, my mom and dad have no face, and so on.
不过 ，如果 你 知道 中国 的 “面子 文化 ” ，你 就 会 更加 明白 中国 人。
