ولكنه يعطي الماشي فيه إحساسا بالدوام والاستمرار but it|gives|the walker|in it|a feeling|of permanence|and continuity But it gives the walker in it a sense of permanence and continuity

والبيت في القصيدة and the house|in|the poem And the house in the poem

ينتهي في ذاته إلا أن عمله يستمر في ما بعده ends|in|itself|except|that|his work|continues|in|what|after it It ends in itself, but its work continues afterwards.

عمله النحوي وعمله الوزني وعمله البلاغي his work|grammatical|and his work|metrical|and his work|rhetorical His grammatical work, his metrical work, and his rhetorical work.

كأن طراز المسجد يملي على المسجد as if|style|mosque|dictates|on|mosque As if the style of the mosque dictates to the next mosque.

وأن يفوقه معا and that|he surpasses him|together And to surpass it together

كما يملي بيت الشعر على الذي يليه as|he dictates|a house|of poetry|to|the one who|follows it As a line of poetry dictates to the one that follows it

أن يوافقه في الوزن والقافية that|he agrees with him|in|meter|and rhyme To agree with it in meter and rhyme

وأن يختلف عنه في المعنى and that|he differs|from it|in|meaning And that it differs from it in meaning

مع انتسابه إليه اختلاف الولد عن أبيه مع إشباهه له with|his affiliation|to it|difference|son|from|his father|with|his resemblance|to him While being related to it like the difference between a child and his father, with a resemblance to him

ولا أسموا الوحدة بيتا من فراغ and not|I call|the unit|a house|from|emptiness And I do not call unity a house from emptiness.

القصيدة مبنية من بيوت كالتي يعيش فيها الناس the poem|built|from|houses|like those|he lives|in them|people The poem is built from houses like those in which people live.

وترتكز على أوتاد وتشد بأسباب and it is based|on|pegs|and it is tied|with ropes And it is anchored on pegs and tied with ropes.

فتتحول الكسرة ياء والضمة واوا والفتحة ألفا then it transforms|the kasra|into a ya|and the damma|into a wa|and the fatha|into an alif So the kasra turns into a ya, the damma into a wa, and the fatha into an alif

ولا سكون يدوم إلا إذا كف الناس عن الكلام and not|silence|it lasts|except|if|they stop|people|from|talking And no stillness lasts except if people stop talking

الكلام عند العرب علامة الحياة the speech|among|the Arabs|a sign|of life Speech among Arabs is a sign of life.

ومن سكن أو سكت فقد فارقها and whoever|he became silent|or|he was silent|he has|he left it And whoever is silent or quiet has departed from it.

ولذلك فقد اخترعوا كلاما لا يسكن and therefore|they have|they invented|speech|not|it becomes silent Therefore, they invented speech that does not cease.

كلاما يبقى ويكرر آلاف السنين وأسموه الشعر speech|it remains|and it repeats|thousands|of years|and they called it|poetry Speech that remains and is repeated for thousands of years, and they called it poetry.

وهذا الشارع القصيدة كلام يرفض أن يسكن and this|street|poem|words|refuses|to|settle And this street, the poem, is a speech that refuses to settle.

أزوره وأعيد زيارته كما أعيد قراءة قصائد العباسيين I visit him|and I repeat|his visit|as|I repeat|reading|poems|Abbasids I visit it and revisit it just as I reread the poems of the Abbasids.

كلما قرأتها فاجأتك بحسن جديد whenever|I read it|I surprised you|with beauty|new Every time I read them, they surprise you with a new beauty.

بمعنى جديد أي بكلام جديد in meaning|new|that is|with words|new In a new meaning, that is, with new words.

وكان يقول الحسن بن هانئ and he was|he says|Al-Hasan|son of|Hani Al-Hasan ibn Hani used to say

يزيدك وجهها حسنا it increases you|her face|beauty Her face adds to your beauty

إذا ما زدته نظرا if|not|I increased him|a glance If I gaze at it more

ما لجوئي إلى هذا الشارع إلا لجوء المستنجد not|my resort|to|this|street|except|resort|the one seeking help My resort to this street is nothing but the resort of one in need

هو سجل لحكام مصر في الزمان الغابر he|recorded|for rulers|Egypt|in|time|past It is a record of the rulers of Egypt in ancient times.

وقد أتعبني ما رأيته من حكام زماني تعبا شديدا and|it tired me|what|I saw|from|rulers|my time|tiredness|severe And I have been greatly troubled by what I have seen from the rulers of my time.

وهم يشعون ثباتا واستمرارا واستقرارا وبقاء في الحكم and they|they radiate|stability|and continuity|and stability|and permanence|in|rule They radiate stability, continuity, and permanence in power.

تنظر إلى وجوههم وتقول: you look|at|their faces|and you say You look at their faces and say:

يا الله هل سنبقى معهم للأبد؟ O|God|whether|we will stay|with them|forever Oh God, will we stay with them forever?

هل قضي علينا وعلى أعمارنا whether|it was decided|upon us|and on|our lives Have we been doomed and our lives?

أن تكون كفئران الزينة الراكضة داخل عجلة that|you are|like rats|decorative|running|inside|wheel To be like the ornamental mice running inside a wheel?

فلا تصل إلى شيء إلا ضحك الزمان وأهله منها؟ so not|you reach|to|anything|except|laughter|time|and its people|from it So that we achieve nothing but the laughter of time and its people at us?

أهو أحمد بن الحسين المتنبي في غضبه التاريخي is he|Ahmad|son of|Al-Hussein|Al-Mutanabbi|in|his anger|historical Is it Ahmad ibn al-Husayn al-Mutanabbi in his historical anger?

يثبت للمرة الألف أنه على صواب؟ he proves|for the time|thousand|that he|on|right Does he prove for the thousandth time that he is right?

سادات كل أناس من نفوسهم leaders|every|people|from|their souls The masters of every people are from their own souls.

وسادة المسلمين الأعبد القزم leaders|Muslims|the most enslaved|dwarf And the masters of the Muslims are the dwarf slaves.

هل غاية الدين أن تحفوا شواربكم؟ is|the goal|of religion|to|you trim|your mustaches Is the purpose of religion to trim your mustaches?

يا أمة ضحكت من جهلها الأمم O|nation|laughed|at|its ignorance|nations O nation that has made the nations laugh at its ignorance.

أتيت إلى شارع المعز I came|to|street|Al-Muizz I came to Al-Muizz Street.

ليلقنني درسا عن أن كل هذا مؤقت to teach me|lesson|about|that|all|this|temporary To teach me a lesson that all of this is temporary.

وألا أصدق الدوام الدهني الثقيل في وجوه الحكام and not|I believe|the permanence|mental|heavy|in|faces|rulers And I do not believe in the heavy mental permanence on the faces of the rulers.

إن السلاطين يمضون وإن الشارع يبقى that|the sultans|they pass|and|the street|it remains The rulers come and go, but the street remains.

إن المعز لدين الله نفسه حين دخل مصر that|the one who honors|for the religion|God|himself|when|he entered|Egypt Indeed, Al-Mu'izz for the religion of God himself when he entered Egypt.

قال له ابن هانئ الأندلسي he said|to him|son of|Hani|the Andalusian Ibn Hani' Al-Andalusi said to him.

ما شئت لا ما شاءت الأقدار not|you wanted|not|what|they wanted|fates What you want, not what fate wants.

فاحكم فأنت الواحد القهار so judge|you are|the one|the overpowering So rule, for you are the one who prevails.

فكأنما أنت النبي محمد so as if|you are|the prophet|Muhammad It is as if you are the Prophet Muhammad.

وكأنما أنصارك الأنصار and as if|your supporters|the helpers And as if your supporters are the Ansar.

فقال أهل مصر: " أول القصيدة كفر " he said|the people of|Egypt|the beginning of|the poem|disbelief The people of Egypt said: "The beginning of the poem is disbelief."

وذهبت مثلا and it became|a proverb And it became a proverb.

ولكن القصيدة نفسها but|the poem|itself But the poem itself,

أي المدينة التي بناها المعز لم تكن كفرا that|the city|that|he built|Al-Mu'izz|not|it was|disbelief the city that Al-Mu'izz built was not disbelief.

كانت القصيدة ببساطة القاهرة وتاريخها كله it was|the poem|simply|Cairo|and its history|all The poem was simply about Cairo and its entire history.

إن السلاطين يمضون indeed|the sultans|they pass Indeed, the sultans pass away.

حتى إن كانوا كراما كالمعز والعزيز even|if|they were|generous|like the goats|and the dear Even if they were noble like Al-Mu'izz and Al-Aziz.

وصلاح الدين والعادل والصالح وقلاوون وابنيه and Salah|the religion|and the just|and the righteous|and Qalawun|and his two sons And Salah al-Din, Al-Adil, Al-Salih, Qalawun, and his two sons.

أو أخسة أنذالا كبعض من تعرفون or|disgraceful|scoundrels|like some|who|you know Or the worst of scoundrels like some you know

وأن يكون أول القصيدة كفرا and that|it is|first|the poem|disbelief And for the beginning of the poem to be disbelief

خير من أن يكون آخرها كفرا better|than|to|it is||disbelief Is better than for its end to be disbelief

والثورة كانت قصيدة and the revolution|it was|a poem And the revolution was a poem

فإن كان هذا الذي نحن فيه آخرها فنحن في أسوأ حال then|was|this|that|we|in it|its last|then we|in|worst|state If this we are in is its end, then we are in the worst condition.

وفي أمس الحاجة لقصيدة جديدة and in|most|need|for a poem|new And we are in dire need of a new poem.
