فيا ليلى كم من حاجة لي مهمة so|Layla|how many|of|need|to me|important Oh Layla, how many important needs I have.

إذا جئتكم بالليل لم أدر ما هيا if|I came to you|at night|not|I knew|what|it is If I come to you at night, I do not know what it is.

فما أشرف الأيفاع إلا صبابة so not|I approached|the young men|except|longing Nothing elevates the youth except longing.

ولا أنشد الأشعار إلا تداويا and not|I recited|the poems|except|healing And I do not recite poetry except for healing.

وقد يجمع الله الشتيتين بعدما and indeed|He gathers|God|the two separated ones|after And God may unite the two estranged after a while.

يظنان كل الظن أن لا تلاقيا they think|all|suspicion|that|not|they met They both think with all their might that they will not meet.

خليلي ما أرجو من العيش بعدما my friend|what|I hope|from|living|after My friend, what do I hope for in life after.

أرى حاجتي تشرى ولا تشترى ليا |my need|is bought||is bought| I see my needs being sold and not bought for me.

خليلي لا والله لا أملك الذي My friend, by God, I do not possess what.

قضى اللَه في ليلى ولا ما قضى ليا he decreed|God|in|Layla|and not|what|he decreed|for me Did God decree for Layla or not decree for me?

قضاها لغيري وابتلاني بحبها he decreed it|for someone else|and he tested me|with loving her He decreed it for someone else and afflicted me with love for her.

فهلا بشيء غير ليلى ابتلانيا so why not|with something|other than|Layla|he tested me So why not with something other than Layla did He afflict me?

وخبرتماني أن تيماء منزل لليلى and you informed me|that|Tayma|a place|for Layla And you informed me that Tayma is the dwelling place of Layla.

إذا ما الصيف ألقى المراسيا if|not|summer|he threw|the anchors When summer casts its anchors

فهذي شهور الصيف عنا قد انقضت so these|months|summer|from us|already|they have passed These summer months have passed us by

وأخرج من بين البيوت لعلني and I go out|from|among|the houses|perhaps I And I go out from among the houses, perhaps I.

أحدث عنك النفس بالليل خاليا Can talk to myself about you in the night, alone.

على مثل ليلى يقتل المرء نفسه For like Layla, a person kills himself.

وإن كنت من ليلى على اليأس طاويا and if|I was|from|Layla|on|despair|bearing And if you are from Layla, embracing despair

خليلي إن ضنوا بليلى فقربا my friends|if|they were stingy|with Layla|then bring me closer My friends, if they are stingy with Layla, then bring her closer
