أصابك عشق أم رميت بأسهم T'a frappé||ou bien|as-tu lancé|leurs flèches has struck you|love|or|you were struck|by arrows Have you been struck by love or have you been hit by arrows?

فما هذه إلا سجية مغرم Ce n'est que||rien que|Nature innée|Amoureux passionné so what|this|only|nature|in love This is nothing but a natural inclination of a lover.

ألا فاسقني كاسات راح وغن لي |Verse-moi|Coupes de vin|vin de palme|et chante-moi| oh not|give me to drink|cups|wine|and sing|for me So pour me cups of wine and sing to me,

بذكر سليمه والكمان ونغني Avec la mention||| I mention|Salim|and the violin|and we sing In remembrance of Salima, with the violin, and let us sing.

فدع عنك ليلى العامرية إنني so leave|from you|Layla|the Amiriya|for I am So leave Layla Al-Amiriya alone, for I

أغار عليها من فم المتكلم I am jealous|of her|from|mouth|speaker am jealous of her from the mouth of the speaker.

أغار عليها من أبيها وأمها I envy|on her|from|her father|and her mother I am jealous of her from her father and mother

إذا حدثاها في الكلام المغمغم if|he talked to her|in|speech|mumbled when they speak to her in a murmuring tone.

أراك طروبا والها كالمتيم I see you|joyful|in a daze|like one in love I see you joyful and distracted like a lovesick person.

تطوف بأكناف السجاف المخيم Circles|Around|The tent|The camp You wander around the edges of the camp's canopy.

أصابك سهم أم بليت بنظرة struck you|arrow|or|afflicted|by a glance Did an arrow strike you or were you afflicted by a glance?

فما هذه إلاسجية من رمي so what|this||of|throwing This is nothing but a poetic expression of a shot.

على شاطيء الوادي نظرت حمامة on|beach|valley|The dove looked|dove On the shore of the valley, I saw a dove.

أطالت علي حسرتي وتندمي prolonged|over|my regret|and my remorse It prolonged my regret and sorrow.

فإن كنت مشتاقا إلى أيمن الحمى then|you were|longing|to|Ayman|fever If you are longing for the right side of the camp,

وتهوى بسكان الخيام فأنعم and loves|the inhabitants|of the tents|so bless and you love the inhabitants of the tents, then be blessed.

أغارعليها من أبيها وأمها I am jealous of her|from|her father|and her mother I am jealous of her from her father and mother.

ومن خطوة المسواك إن دار في الفم and from|step|miswak|if|rotates|in|mouth And from the movement of the miswak when it turns in the mouth.

أغارعلى أعطافها من ثيابها |her shoulders|from|her clothes I am jealous of her shoulders from her clothes.

إذا ألبستها فوق جسم منعم if|you dressed her|on top of|body|soft When I dress her over a soft body.

وأحسد أقداحا تقـبل ثغـرها and I envy|cups|that receive|her smile And I envy the cups that approach her lips.

إذا أوضعتها موضع اللثم في الفم if|you placed it|position|of the tongue|in|mouth When I place them in the spot of kisses on the mouth.

خذوا بدمي منها فإني قتيلها take|with my blood|from her|for I|am her slain Take my blood from them, for I am their slain.

ولا مقصدي الا تجود وتنعمي and not|my intention|except|to be generous|and you enjoy And my only intention is for you to be generous and indulge.

ولاتقتلوها إن ظفرتم بقتلها And do not kill it|if|you prevail|in killing it And do not kill her if you manage to kill her.

ولكن سلوها كيف حل لها دمي but|ask her|how|solved|for her|my blood But ask her how it is permissible for her to shed my blood.

وقولوا لها يامنية النفس إنني And say|to her|O desire|soul|that I And say to her, O desire of my soul, if only you knew.

قتيل الهوى والعشق لو كنت تعلمي slain|passion|and love|if|you were|to know I am a victim of love and passion, if you only knew.

ولا تحسبوا إني قتلت بصارم and not|you think|that I|killed|with a sword And do not think that I was killed by a sword.

ولكن رمتني من رباها بأسهم but|shot me|from|her upbringing|with arrows But I was struck by arrows from her heights.

لها حكم لقمان وصورة يوسف it has|wisdom|Luqman|and the image|of Joseph She has the wisdom of Luqman and the image of Joseph.

ونغمة داود وعفة مريم and the melody of|David|and the purity of|Mary And the melody of David and the chastity of Mary.

ولي حزن يعقوب ووحشة يونس I have|sadness|Jacob|loneliness|Jonah And I have the sorrow of Jacob and the loneliness of Jonah.

وآلام أيوب وحسرة آدم |Job|regret|Adam And the pains of Job and the regret of Adam.

ولما تلاقينا وجدت بنانها and when|we met|I found|her fingers And when we met, I found her fingers.

مخضبة تحكي عصارة عندم a woman who is adorned with henna|tells|juice|when Stained, telling the essence of the past.

فقلت خضبت الكف بعدي أهكذا I said|stained|the hand|after me|like this I said, did you dye your hand after me, is this how it is?

يكون جزاء المستهام المتيم will be|reward|lovesick|infatuated Is this the reward for the lovesick and infatuated?

فلا تك بالبهتان والزور متهمي so do not|be|with falsehood|and lies|my accuser So do not accuse me with falsehood and lies.

ولكنني لما وجدتك راحلا but I|when|found you|leaving But when I found you departing,

وقد كنت لي كفي وزندي ومعصمي and|were|to me|my hand|and my support|and my wrist And you had been my support, my arm, and my wrist.

بكيت دما يوم النوى فمسحته I cried|blood|the day|separation|and I wiped it I cried blood on the day of separation, and I wiped it away

بكفي فاحمرت بناني من دمي my hand|turned red|my fingers|from|my blood with my hand, and my fingers turned red from my blood

ولو قبل مبكاها بكيت صبابة and if|before|her crying|I would cry|out of longing And if I had cried before her weeping out of longing

لكنت شفيت النفس قبل التندم I would have been|healed|soul|before|regret I would have healed my soul before regretting

ولكن بكت قبلي فهيجني البكا but|cried|before me|stirred me|crying But she cried before me, which made me weep.

بكاها فكان الفضل للمتقدم He cried for her|so it was|the merit|to the one who advanced Her crying was such that the credit goes to the one who cried first.

بكيت على من زين الحسن وجهها I cried|for|who|adorned|beauty|her face I wept for the one whose beauty adorned her face.

وليس لها مثل بعـرب وأعجم and there is not|for it|like|among Arabs|and non-Arabs And there is no one like her among Arabs and non-Arabs.

عراقية الألحاظ .. مكية الحشا Iraqi|of the eyes|Meccan|of the heart Iraqi in looks .. Meccan in heart

هلالية العينين طائية الفم crescent-shaped|of the eyes|full|of the mouth With crescent-shaped eyes and a tongue like a Ta'i

وممشوطة بالمسك قد فاح نشرها and adorned|with musk|already|fragrant|its spreading And perfumed with musk, its fragrance has spread

بثغر كأن الدر فيه منظم with a smile|as if|pearl|in it|arranged With a mouth like a pearl, arranged within it

أشارت بطرف العين خيفة أهلها She signaled|with the corner|of the eye|fear|her family She signaled with her eye, fearing for her family.

إشاره محزون ولم تتكلم gesture|sad|and not|speak A sad signal, and she did not speak.

فأيقنت أن الطرف قد قال مرحبا so I realized|that|the other party|already|said|hello So I was certain that her glance had said welcome.

وأهلا وسهلا بالحبيب المتيم and welcome|and easy|to the beloved|deeply in love And welcome to the beloved who is infatuated.
