Adjective

Adjective

An adjective is an independent part of speech that indicates the object feature and answers the questions ինչպիսի՞ (What kind of?), ո՞ր (which?) and etc.

E.g. մեծ (big), փոքր (small)

Like English in Armenian too, an adjective doesn't change when the noun changes. For example:

  1. Masculine to feminine example: Սա իմ կրտսեր դուստրն է (this is my little daughter)

  2. Singular to plural example: Սա իմ սպիտակ կատուն է (this is my white cat) becomes: Սրանք իմ սպիտակ կատուներն են (these are my white cats).

Adjectives in Armenian precede the nouns they refer to.

Սա սիրուն տուն է։ This is a nice house.

DEGREES OF COMPARISON

There are three degrees of comparison: positive, comparative, superlative.

E.g. շատ-much, many

  հետաքրքիր-interesting

✓ The comparative degree is used when there are two objects or actions which are compared or contrasted.

In Armenian comparison is usually expressed by using ավելի (more) +adjective or պակաս(less) +adjective

A.Comparison may be introduced by the usage of the word քան․
e.g. Ամերիկան ավելի մեծ է,քան Հայաստանը։ America is bigger than Armenia.

Comparisons may also appear in the ablative case.

e.g. Ամերիկան Հայաստանից մեծ է։America is bigger than Armenia.

✓ The superlative degree is used when more than two objects or actions are compared or contrasted. It is formed with the help of the prefix ամենա- or the word ամենից (from all), which are the equivalents of the English ending –est. or most.

e.g. երկար-ավելի երկար-ամենաերկար-long-longer-the longest

Some adjectives are made superlative with the suffix –գույն․This form of superlative formation is rarely used in colloquial speech. Very few adjectives can form the superlative degree with this ending.

E.g. մեծ-ավելի մեծ-մեծագույն-big-bigger-the biggest

լավ-ավելի լավ-լավագույն-good-better-the best
