Spanish Pick Up Lines You Should Try!

Whether you‘re on vacation in Guatemala or the new girl you’ve been crushing on is from Venezuela, it might be worth it to have a few Spanish pick up lines in your back pocket.

Spanish pick up lines, or piropos, run generally along the same lines as metaphors in a different language: they usually don‘t translate as well. Regardless of the lost-in-translation effect, most of these pick up lines play with Spanish jokes or puns and are a surefire way to get the girl, or at least break the ice.

There is some bad news: we’ll go over some grammar here! Let‘s work through it fast so we can get to the invaluable information.

Using the Past Subjunctive

The past subjunctive is used to express desires or, like in most pick up line situations, unlikely occurrences.

To quickly go through what you need to know about past subjunctives, let‘s give an example using the Spanish verb hablar, which means “to talk”.

To start the somewhat “complicated” process of conjugation, begin with the third-person plural of the preterite, which in this case is hablaron.

Once you‘ve done that, move on to snipping off the -ron part and then choose one of the two verb endings.

The past subjunctive is used in pick up lines when you‘re referring to these cases:

Speaking to someone about a desire, want or, um, need. You should use it when expressing emotion in the past.

Yo quería que bailaras conmigo. (I wanted you to dance with me.)

Speaking to someone about your current emotion or doubts about what has already happened.

Estaba nervioso porque te habías visto tan hermoso. (I was nervous because you looked so beautiful.)

Speaking and using the word ojalá, which is generally used to express an uncertainty.

Si solo ella dijera sí. (If only she said yes.)

Sometimes when you‘re flirting you will be talking about unlikely circumstances. In these cases, you are going to be including one verb in the past subjunctive and another in the conditional tense.

Si no tuviera tarea, podría llevarte a cenar. (If I didn‘t have homework, I could take you out to dinner.)

Okay, the grammar has been covered, now let‘s move on to the good stuff (warning: Some are extremely cheesy! However, they are efficient!).
