罗钢 是 我 的 第一个 扒手 朋友 ， 也 是 我 在 九号 碰到 的 举止 最像 电影 中 的 西方人 的 “ 同犯 ”（ 这是 干部 要求 人犯 互相 称呼 的 称号 ）。 他 皮肤 白而 白皙 ， 大眉大眼 ， 喜欢 用 夸张 的 表情 和 动作 来 表达 他 的 感情 。 比如 大张 着 嘴巴 ， 将 下巴 一歪 ， 表示 吃惊 或 不屑 ， 或 示意 他 述说 的 事情 不凡 ， 用 耸肩 或 向上 翻眼 表示 无可奈何 等等 。 从 中国 人 眼中 看来 ， 这种 举止 给 人 轻浮 、 不安分 的 印象 。

文化 革命 的 高潮时 真是 扒手 的 “ 盛大 节日 ”（ 列宁 曾 说 革命 是 人民 的 盛大 节日 ）。 罗钢 自得 地 告诉 我 ， 他 参加 了 “ 湘江 风雷 ”， 参加 了 抢枪 。 在 24 中 附近 的 武装冲突 中 ， 被 保守派 击中 负 了 伤 ， 成 了 英雄 。 他 和 他 的 战友 们 抢 了 军火库 中 的 几辆 卡车 ， 他 学会 了 开车 ， 但 却 从来不 挂 高速 档 。 他 学会 了 使用 59 式 手枪 、 半 自动步枪 、 机枪 ， 却 从来 不能 拆开 枪支 。 文革 前 的 中国 ， 这些 事 老百姓 从来 不能 问津 ， 更 不用说 经常 出入 看守所 的 扒手 了 。

虽然 罗钢 从未 向 我 说明 他 是 个 扒手 ， 但他却 毫不掩饰 地向 我 讲述 各种 只有 扒手 才 知道 的 事 。 他 满嘴 黑话 ， 我 开始 很难 听懂 他 那些 黑社会 的 专用词 。 比如 他 从不 称 士兵 或 战士 ， 而 叫 他们 粮子 ，“ 当兵 吃粮 ” 的 意思 。 他 不 说 “ 三 、 四 、 五 、 六 、 七 ” 而 说 “ 江 、 都 、 神 、 少 、 拐 ”。 称钱 为 大 叶子 ， 称 粮票 为 小 叶子 。

罗钢 对 我 非常 友好 ， 大概 是因为 我们 都 是 造反派 的 缘故 。 他 喜欢 哼 电影 《 流浪者 》 中 的 《 拉兹之歌 》， 还有 一只 不 知名 的 小调 “ 取下 你 的 口 鼻罩 ， 看看 你 的 长 模郎 ， 你 如果 没有 嫁人 ， 可 一定 要 嫁给 我 ”。 罗钢 是 恶作剧 的 好手 ， 他 告诉 我 ， 他 小学 快 毕业 时 和 他 的 男同学 一块 对 女同学 逐渐 隆起 的 乳房 产生 了 浓厚 的 兴趣 ， 他们 很 想 摸 一摸 那 奇怪 的 东西 ， 看 是 什么 感觉 ， 但 又 不敢 冒失 。 他 的 同学 与 他 打赌 ， 如果 罗钢 能 摸 到 那 东西 又 不 惹 女孩子 生气 ， 他 就 能 赢 一块钱 。 罗钢 马上 答应 ：“ 我们 打赌 ， 如果 我 做 不到 ， 我付 你 一块钱 ！ ” 第二天 ， 他 与 这个 同学 一边 交谈 一边 朝 迎面 走来 的 女孩子 走 去 。 罗钢 有意 不看 女孩子 而 专心 于 他 的 同学 扯谈 ， 等 他 与 女孩子 擦身而过 时 ， 他 故作 无意 地 转过 头 吐痰 ， 痰 正好 吐 在 女孩子 胸口 。 他 故作 吃惊 ， 马上 掏出 手帕 ， 不迭 声 地 道歉 ， 并用 手帕 在 女孩子 的 胸口 擦起来 。 当然 那 女孩子 没生气 ， 还 不断 说 “ 没关系 ， 没关系 。 ” 罗钢 体面地 赢 了 一块钱 ， 也 满足 了 他 的 好奇心 。

有次 罗钢 问 我 “ 世界 上 什么 东西 最 好玩 ？ ” 我 说 不 知道 ， 他 自己 回答 “ 人玩人 ”。 显然 他 指 的 是 性 ， 他 的 享 乐观 实在 令人 为 他 害羞 。 他 有时 站 在 床上 做出 双手 按着 女人 乳房 的 样子 ， 闭着 眼睛 扭 屁股 ， 润 着 他 味 ， 那种 有 经验 的 样子 使 肖福祥 悄悄 对 我 说 ，“ 他 的 案子 一定 与 强奸 之类 的 事 有关 。 ” 我 虽然 没 去 探究 他 究竟 是不是 单为 扒窃 案 进来 的 ， 但 可以 肯定 的 是 ， 他 从 不敢 正面 澄清 号子 里 关于 他 的 案子 与 强奸 女人 有关 的 谣传 ， 这 本身 就 说明 这件 事 已够 糟糕 的 啦 。 有天 我 问 肖福祥 ，“ 你 怎么 想到 罗钢 的 案子 与 强奸 有关 呢 ？ ”“ 上周 ， 他 预审 回来 ， 显得 咪劳 的 ， 我 问 他 ‘ 大 河里 浮 菩萨 —— 来刹 了 神 呀 ？ ' 他 像 垫 在 床角 的 蛤蟆 ， 颤 是 个 颤 ， 还要 硬撑 ， 告诉 我 ， 一个 好 厉害 的 预审员 —— 还是 个 女 的 —— 问 他 ‘ 进去 没有 '，‘ 出 了 水 没有 ' 你 想想看 ， 还是 个 女 的 ！ ” 罗钢 另 一件 最 感兴趣 的 事 是 “ 打狗 ”， 即 拣 烟屁股 。 每次 被 提讯 或者 出去 挨批 斗时 （ 这 在 文化 革命 中是 常有 的 事 ）， 罗钢 都 要 打 很多 “ 狗 ” 回来 。 下象棋 ， 下围棋 ， 猜谜语 ， 做 数学题 ， 我 看不起 罗钢 ， 但 在 没有 火柴 的 条件 下用 最 原始 的 办法 生火 ， 他 却是 我 望尘莫及 的 。 他 首先 从 床上 的 草席 上 扯 出 几根 草 搓成 一根 细细的 草绳 ， 然后 用 被褥 上 的 一团 小 棉絮 包 起来 ， 用 一块 木板 压着 这团 包紧 的 棉团 在 床板 上 猛 擦 ， 他 擦 得 满身 大汗 时 ， 棉团 开始 冒烟 ， 他 马上 解开 棉团 ， 轻轻 将 冒烟 的 草绳 吹 出 明火 ， 然后 几个 抽烟 的 家伙 凑 过去 ， 用 那根 草绳 上 的 火 点燃 他们 用 烟蒂 卷成 的 香烟 ， 大口 大口 地过 烟瘾 。

另 一件 叫罗钢 头疼 的 事 自然 是 饥饿 。 肖福祥 比罗 钢早 进 号子 两三年 ， 他 已 坐 了 4 年 牢 。 他 饭量 比罗 钢 小得多 ， 但 4 年 下来 已 瘦 得 不成人 样 ， 才 不到 30 岁 的 年纪 ， 头发 已 由于 缺乏营养 而 掉 了 一大半 。 再 大 的 胖子 ， 在 这里 饿 半年 就 会 瘦 得 亲人 都 认不出来 。 每天 吃饭 前 ， 人犯 都 站 在 门旁 ， 像 在 等待 盛大 的 事情 一样 。 饭 一 进来 ， 罗钢 这类 身强力壮 的 人马 上 抢 着 去 挑 那些 看去 满 一些 的 钵子 。 菜 是 由 值日 的 人犯 用勺分 在 各人 自己 的 菜 钵 里 ， 分菜 时菜 钵 拢 在 地上 ， 人们 围着 观看 ， 眼睛 都 鼓得 像 牛 眼睛 ， 好像 在 观看 一件 利害相关 的 决策 。 有些 人 不时 为了 分 菜 不均 而 发生冲突 。

罗钢 对 这 折磨 人 的 饥饿 想尽 了 办法 来 对付 。 他 能 做 的 真正 有效 的 事 大概 只有 两件 。 一件 是 他 趁 每次 放风 时 ， 在 院子 里 扯 几根 野草 。 放风 是 不定期 的 ， 我 记得 我 在 左家塘 近两年 ， 只放 了 三次 风 。 肖福祥 说 文革 前 每个 月 要 放次 风 。 每次 放风 时 ， 所长 和 看守 士兵 轮流 把 每个 号子 的 人犯 放在 院子 里 ， 让 他们 散步 十 来 分钟 。 每次 放风 时罗钢 居然 抓到 了 一只 癞蛤蟆 。 一进 号子 ， 他 就 把 这 只 蛤蟆 生剥 了 皮 ， 还 没 等 它 停止 动弹 ， 就 活活 吞进 肚里 。 为了 帮助 吞咽 ， 他 还 自己 拍拍 胸和肚 。 另 一件 罗钢 能 做 的 事 就是 “ 买饭 ”。 号子 里 一些 最穷 ， 家里 没有 人送 衣物 ， 食量 又 不大 的 人 ， 发觉 饭 是 号子 里 价值 最高 的 东西 ， 于是 有 了 饭 的 交易 。 罗钢 向 大家 称为 “ 少 老板 ” 的 人 和 另 一个 乡下 进 长沙 做生意 （ 那时 任何 非官方 的 生意 都 是 非法 的 ） 的 人 买饭 。 少 老板 是 位 30 开外 的 小个子 。 据说 他 的 家族 原来 是 长沙 有名 的 有 国民党 背景 的 资本家 。 他 父亲 是 很 有钱 的 大 老板 ，1949 年 后 被 共产党 革了 命 ， 这位 少 老板 失 了 生计 ， 于是 学会 了 做 非法 的 粮票 生意 ， 自然 成 了 左家塘 的 常客 。 他 在 九号 不失 他会 做生意 的 本性 ， 看见 饭 是 做生意 的 好 对象 ， 于是 以 一件 旧衣服 或近 一元 监票 的 价格 卖 一钵饭 。 监票 是 左家塘 当局 发 的 一种 只能 在 左家塘 流通 的 油印 纸币 。 我们 只准 使用 监票 请 干部 买 东西 ， 不能 使用 和 保留 现金 。 少 老板 每星期 能卖 一钵饭 ， 卖饭 的 那天 ， 他 睡 在 床上 不 起来 ， 早饭 就免 了 ， 快到 吃 午饭 时 ， 他 饿 得 只 翻白眼 ， 睡不着 ， 也 起不来 。 这种 交易 自然 是 违反 监规 的 事 ， 谈 交易 都 是 躲过 众人 的 耳目 在 屋 角落里 进行 ， 其他人 很少 知道 讨价还价 的 过程 ， 但据 罗钢 讲 ， 一钵饭 的 价钱 大概 相当于 当时 工人 一天 的 工资 或 外面 一钵饭 价钱 的 10 倍 左右 。 不要 多久 ， 罗钢 能 换 饭 吃 的 衣服 和 监票 都 换掉 了 。

家里 有 资助 的 人 想尽办法 让 家属 送 食物 进来 。 他们 一般 是 托 被 释放 的 人 带口 讯 回去 ， 请 家里人 用 非法 的 办法 送 食物 进来 。 比如 把 猪油 装在空 牙膏 皮中 送进来 ， 把 猪肉 松装 在 棉衣 里 或 棉絮 中 送进来 ， 把 葡萄糖 当药 送进来 等等 。 用 饥饿 惩罚 犯人 大概 是 中国 监狱 的 传统 ， 因为 民间 早有 饿 牢 鬼 的 说法 。 文化 革命 中 共产党 加强 了 这个 传统 ， 连 允许 送 牢饭 的 传统 也 改 了 。 有次 罗钢 饿 得 实在 难受 ， 开始 哼夜 歌子 来 转移 自己 对 饥饿 的 注意 ：“ 人 在 世上 哪般 好 ， 顶 不得 路边 一兜 草 ， 草是 逢 春 又 发生 ， 人死 一去不复 生 ……” 突然 刘 所长 哗啦一声 把门 打开 叫 肖福祥 提讯 。 肖福祥 慌慌张张 地 从 床上 跳下来 穿鞋 。 这时 刘 所长 向罗钢 吼道 ：“ 唱 什么 呀 ？ 唱 什么 呀 ？ ” 罗钢 正好 逮着 了 机会 ， 迎上去 对 刘 所长 说 ：“ 报告 干部 ， 我 实在 饿 得 想 吊头 ， 我犯 了 什么 事 ， 你 要判 就 判 ， 要 杀 就 杀 ， 把 我 五花大绑 吊起来 ， 打 50 大板 ， 我 都 愿意 ， 总 比 这样 活活 挨饿 要 好 。 ” 刘 所长 知道 罗钢 是 那种 冰冻 的 豆腐 不进 油盐 的 家伙 ， 面 带 一丝 笑意 地 答道 ，“ 你 还 想 过 修正主义 腐化 生活 呀 ， 可 没 那么 便宜 的 事 ， 这 就是 要 改造 你 的 腐化 思想 。 我们 共产党 从不 打人 ， 也 不会 判乱 刑 ……” 罗钢 马上 接上去 ：“ 只是 要 把 我们 饿 服帖 ！ ” 刘 所长 面转 怒容 ：“ 老实 点 ， 不要 胡说八道 。 ” 刘 所长 的话 并 没有 兑现 。 不久 他 就 被 新来 的 军人 所长 徐 络腮 代替 了 。 徐 络腮 是 当时 对 湖南 实行 军事管制 的 47 军 的 一个 排长 。 军队 来 的 干部 大约 于 1968 年 中 全部 代替 了 老公 （ 安局 ） 检 （ 察院 ） 法 （ 院 ） 的 干部 。 他们 带来 的 第一个 重要 变化 就是 打人 。 左家塘 看守所 的 人犯 有 “ 打电话 ” 的 习惯 ， 这 就是 邻居 号子 里 的 人 通过 相邻 的 两个 窗子 互相 交谈 、 传递信息 ， 或者 两个 对面 号子 的 人 站 在 前 窗上 用 手划 字 传递信息 （ 被 大家 称为 “ 长途电话 ”）。 有天 徐 络腮 抓 到 一个 “ 打电话 ” 的 人 ， 把 他 带到 看守所 的 办公室 去 ， 接着 就 听到 一阵 用 木棍 打人 的 声音 。 我 爬 到 窗前 去 看 ， 可以 隐约 见到 徐 络腮 挥动 木棍 打人 的 影子 。 被 打 的 人用 手护 着 头 和 眼镜 。 从 他 的 眼镜 ， 我 发觉 他 很 像 和 我 同一个 案子 被 抓进来 的 湖南大学 的 学生 领袖 周国辉 。 为了 肯定 我 的 判断 ， 我 大声 叫 道 ：“ 周国辉 ！ ” 被 打 的 人 果然 回头 看 了 我 一眼 。 这 是 徐 络腮 又 抡 棍 乱打 。 我 忍不住 喊起来 ：“ 不要 打人 ！ ” 这一下 惊动 了 整个 监房 ， 很多 趴在 窗口 观看 的 人 都 叫 起来 ：“ 不要 打人 ， 要 文斗 ， 不要 武斗 ！ ” 喊声 此起彼伏 。 徐 络腮 掉头 朝 九号 走来 。 我 知道 今天 少不了 一顿 毒打 ， 马上 加 了 一件 衣服 。 罗钢 一定 要 替 我 戴 一顶 帽子 ， 被 我 拒绝 了 。 他 小声 道 ：“ 挨打 的 时候 用 手护 着 头 和 肚子 ， 别的 地方 都 有骨头 撑 着 ， 这 两个 地方 千万别 让 他们 打坏 了 ”。 徐 络腮 打开 九号 的 门 ， 怒 声道 ：“ 刚才 谁 叫喊 ？ ”“ 是 我 。 ”“ 给 我 出来 ！ ” 我 一进 办公室 ， 徐 络腮 抡 棍 就 打 ， 铺 头盖 脑 。 这时 所有 的 监房 都 叫 起来 ：“ 不准 打人 ， 要 文斗 ， 不要 武斗 ！ ” 看守 的 士兵 站 在 院子 中间 听见 哪边 叫 就 朝 哪边 扔 石头 ， 跳来跳去 。 他 向 北边 扔 石头 时 ， 南边 的 吼声 又 起 ， 他 向 南边 扔 石头 时 ， 北边 又 是 一片 吼声 。 罗钢 自然 是 最 积极 的 一位 ， 我 听得出 他 的 声音 。 不久 监房 院子 大门 敞开 了 ， 几十个 荷枪实弹 的 士兵 拥进来 ， 散布 到 每个 号子 门口 ， 大门口 架起 两挺 机枪 。 来 了 几个 大官 模样 的 军人 ， 把 我 与 周国辉 叫 到 监房 外 的 预审 室 ， 态度 出人意料 地 温和 。 其中 一个 瘦 小个子 对 我 说 ：“ 你 有 什么 意见 可以 向 我们 提 ， 不许 闹事 。 ” 我 的 意见 很 简单 ：“ 他们 这 几天 几乎 天天 打人 ， 毛主席 说 要 文斗 ， 不要 武斗 ， 你们 不是 要 按 毛主席 指示 办事 吗 ？ ”“ 打人 当然 不 对 ， 闹事 就 更 不 对 了 。 ” 当时 中国 的 政治形势 非常 微妙 ， 造反派 与 保守派 之间 的 冲突 正在 朝 有利于 造反派 的 方向 发展 ， 而 我 和 周国辉 过去 所在 的 “ 省无联 ” 的 成员 正在 利用 这个 机会 要求 为 被 打成 反革命 的 “ 省无联 ” 平反 。 47 军 的 人 当时 也 搞不清 政局 会 如何 发展 ， 他们 也 看见 过 1967 年 夏天 “ 湘江 风雷 ” 平反 的 情形 。 所以 47 军 的 官员 当时 对 因 “ 省无联 ” 问题 坐牢 的 人 采取 一种 谨慎 和 不作 结论 的 态度 。 因此 那次 闹事 没有 导致 官方 的 报复 ， 打人 的 事 渐渐 减少 了 。

罗钢 与 我 的 英文 老师 吴德显 都 是 正统 的 造反派 组织 （ 他们 在 省 革委会 筹备 小组 有 席位 ） 工联 的 “ 治安 指挥部 ” 挨 过重 打 的 人 ， 他们 都 有 丰富 的 挨打 经验 。 吴 老师 的 肝脏 被 治安 指挥部 打坏 了 ， 时常 疼痛 。 他 是 国民党 时代 的 飞行员 ， 四十年代 曾 在 美国 受过 训练 。 1949 年 他 随 程潜 起义 ， 投降 了 共产党 。 他 后来 被 送到 一所 干部学校 洗脑 ， 洗脑 后 被 分配 到 一个 钟表店 当 职员 。 1964 年 四清 （ 清 政治 ， 清 思想 ， 清 组织 ， 清 经济 ） 运动 时 ， 每个 单位 都 需要 一个 “ 阶级 敌人 ” 作为 阶级斗争 的 “ 活靶子 ”， 他 的 美国 和 国民党 背景 自然 是 最好 的 活靶子 。 他 被 人 检举 “ 奸污妇女 ” 而成 了 批判 对象 。 四清运动 过后 ， 事情 也 就 过去 了 。 但 文化 革命 在 1968 年 开始 的 清理 阶级 队伍 运动 中 他 又 成 了 靶子 ， 他 被 关在 治安 指挥部 ， 被 打 得 半死 ， 然后 被 转到 左家塘 看守所 。 他 的 英文 很 好 ， 每天 自编 课本 向 我 教授 英文 。 他 后来 被 以 奸污妇女 和 “ 国民党 残渣余孽 ” 罪 被判 了 15 年 徒刑 。

九号 的 人们 都 称 扒手 为 “ 钳工 师傅 ”， 而罗钢 却 喜欢 叫 扒窃 为 “ 捉鱼 ”。 每次 游斗 后 回到 号子 里 ， 他 总要 叹气 ：“ 今天 鱼真 多 呀 ！ 可惜 我 的 钳子 被 拷 起来 了 ， 只能 做 牛 胯 子里 的 蝇子 —— 随卵 摇 。 ” 我 对 他 的 钳工 手艺 有点 好奇 ， 有次 冒昧 地问 他 ：“ 我 真难 想象 ， 怎么 可能 从 一个 大 活人 身上 把 钱包 拿走 呢 ？ 有没有 什么 特别 的 工具 捉鱼 ？ ” 他 说 工具 当然 有 ， 比如 刮胡子 刀片 ， 用 食指 和 中指 夹 着 轻轻 一晃 就 能 开个 口子 让 鱼 出来 。 “ 不过 我 很少 用 工具 。 ” 终于 我 有次 机会 看到 他 的 手艺 。 他 是 属于 “ 二进宫 ” 有 劳改 经验 的 人 ， 很会 识别 号子 里 的 KGB（ 犯 人们 将 告密者 称为 KGB）。 有天 他 小声 对 我 说 ：“ 那个 姓 刘 的 家伙 是 个 ‘ 滔 老倌 '， 他 经常 向 干部 递条子 ， 我们 得 让 他 懂 点味 。 ” 姓 刘 的 是 个 被 当局 指控 犯 了 贪污罪 的 五十多岁 的 老头 ， 他 在 国民党 时代 当 过 大官 。 在 九号 他 对 干部 最 尊敬 ， 对 监规 遵守 得 最好 。 他 平时 对 我 颇 友好 ， 尽管 对 扒手 们 很 不 恭敬 。 我 对 罗钢 的话 半信半疑 ：“ 你 怎么 知道 他 是 ‘ 滔 老倌 '？ ”“ 他 是 历史 反革命 ， 共产党 在 号子 里 总是 利用 历史 反革命 监视 现行 反革命 ， 利用 刑事犯 整 反革命 犯 。 你 注意 没有 ， 每天 早晨 这 刘 老倌 总是 起得 最早 ， 争着 去 倒 马桶 ， 端盛 热水 的 桶 进来 ， 你 以为 他 勤快 呀 ， 他 是 趁 干部 开门 和 大家 没 起来 的 机会 ， 向 干部 递小 报告 。 ” 一两天 后 ， 罗钢用 他 的 钳工 技术 扒 来 这位 刘 老倌 写 的 一份 小 报告 。 这是 一张 预审员 给 他 写 交代 材料 的 纸 ， 上面 写 着 ：“ 报告 干部 ， 九号 的 文少甫 每天 背诵 和 默写 封建 毒草 唐诗三百 首 ， 唐德 一 在 默写 诸葛亮 的 出师表 。 罗钢 六月 七日 向 人 介绍 他 的 扒窃 经验 。 赵 德文 六月 十一日 说 他 现在 的 工资 在 解放初 可以 买 比 现在 多一倍 的 东西 ， 攻击 新 社会 ， 发泄 对 社会主义 的 不满 。 报告 人 刘 ××。 ” 第二天 刘 老倌 的 墨水 、 笔 、 纸 都 不翼而飞 。 他 像 热锅上的蚂蚁 ， 在 那里 找 他 的 报告 ， 嘟嘟哝哝 地骂 ：“ 谁 把 我 的 笔 拿走 了 ？ 怕 是 活得 不耐烦 了 ！ ” 渐渐 地 ， 他 是 瞎子 吃 汤丸 心里有数 ， 知道 是 有人 在 报复 他 的 小 报告 ， 也 是 哑巴吃黄连 有苦 说不出 。 他 看到 过 扒手 合伙 打 KGB 的 事 ， 只 丢 了 纸 和 笔 真是 算 客气 的 了 。

一两个 月 后 ， 刘 老倌 在 一个 打击犯罪 的 运动 中 被 判处 无期徒刑 。 他 知道 共产党 是 在 跟 他 算 国民党 时代 的 账 ， 他 大叫 “ 不 公正 ”。 在 判刑 后 到 离开 九号 的 几天 内 ， 他 完全 变 了 个人 ， 天天 骂 共产党 社会 是 个人 吃 人 的 社会 ， 罗钢 对 他 的 敌意 也 随着 这个 变化 而 消失 了 。
