This new season of fresh stories all about personal experiences. Today's story is about my own personal Spanish journey. As you are aware, I am not a native Spanish speaker. While you can read a bit about why I'm a Spanish teacher on my blog, a couple of listeners have asked me to share the story of my Spanish journey in Spanish.

Today's story is told in the first person using both the present and past tenses. Important vocabulary in the story includes: “viaje” (journey), “idioma” (language), “seguir” (to continue), “tuve” (I had), and “extranjero” (foreign). Wichtige Vokabeln in der Geschichte sind: "viaje" (Reise), "idioma" (Sprache), "seguir" (weitergehen), "tuve" (ich hatte) und "extranjero" (fremd). Cuando yo tenía catorce (14) años, tuve la oportunidad de aprender un idioma. عندما كان عمري أربعة عشر (14) عامًا ، أتيحت لي الفرصة لتعلم لغة. Als ich vierzehn (14) Jahre alt war, hatte ich die Möglichkeit, eine Sprache zu lernen. When I was fourteen (14) years old, I had the opportunity to learn a language. En mi escuela, solo había dos opciones: español o alemán. في مدرستي ، كان هناك خياران فقط: الإسبانية أو الألمانية. An meiner Schule gab es nur zwei Möglichkeiten: Spanisch oder Deutsch. At my school, there were only two options: Spanish or German. Decidí tomar el español porque creía, a los catorce años, que era un idioma más atractivo que el alemán, más romántico. قررت أن أتعلم الإسبانية لأنني اعتقدت ، في سن الرابعة عشرة ، أنها لغة أكثر جاذبية من الألمانية ، وأكثر رومانسية. Ich entschied mich für Spanisch, weil ich mit vierzehn Jahren dachte, dass diese Sprache attraktiver und romantischer ist als Deutsch. I decided to take Spanish because I thought, at the age of fourteen, that it was a more attractive language than German, more romantic. J'ai décidé de prendre l'espagnol parce que je pensais, à l'âge de quatorze ans, que c'était une langue plus attirante que l'allemand, plus romantique.

El primer año de español no fue fácil. لم تكن السنة الأولى للغة الإسبانية سهلة. Das erste Jahr in Spanisch war nicht einfach. The first year of Spanish was not easy. Tuve que aprender mucha información de memoria. كان علي حفظ الكثير من المعلومات. Ich musste eine Menge Informationen auswendig lernen. I had to memorize a lot of information. Tuve listas de vocabulario y conjugaciones de verbos. Ich hatte Vokabellisten und Verbkonjugationen. I had vocabulary lists and verb conjugations. No sabía cómo poner información en contexto. لم أكن أعرف كيف أضع المعلومات في سياقها. Ich wusste nicht, wie ich die Informationen in einen Zusammenhang bringen sollte. I didn't know how to put information in context. Я не знав, як помістити інформацію в контекст. Hasta ese punto, la escuela me fue muy fácil. حتى تلك اللحظة ، كانت المدرسة سهلة للغاية بالنسبة لي. Bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt war die Schule für mich sehr einfach. Up to that point, school was very easy for me. До цього моменту школа давалася мені дуже легко. El español fue mi primera clase desafiante y no fue un fracaso completo, pero no hice bien. كانت اللغة الإسبانية هي أول فصل دراسي مليء بالتحدي ولم يكن ذلك فاشلاً تمامًا ، لكني لم أبلي بلاءً حسنًا. Spanisch war mein erster anspruchsvoller Kurs, und ich bin nicht völlig gescheitert, aber ich war nicht gut. Spanish was my first challenging class and it wasn't a complete failure, but I didn't do well. Іспанська була моїм першим складним предметом, і це не був повний провал, але я не дуже добре впорався.

A pesar de no comprender mucho del español, me gustó la clase. Obwohl ich nicht viel Spanisch verstehe, hat mir der Kurs Spaß gemacht. Despite not understanding much Spanish, I liked the class. Незважаючи на те, що я не дуже добре розумію іспанську, мені дуже сподобалося заняття. Me gustaron los videos que miramos sobre las culturas. Ich mochte die Videos, die wir uns über die Kulturen angesehen haben. I liked the videos we watched about the cultures. Мені сподобалися відео, які ми дивилися про культури. Me gustó aprender de la comida. Es hat mir Spaß gemacht, etwas über das Essen zu erfahren. I liked learning about food. Sobre todo, me gustó la música que escuchamos. Ich mochte vor allem die Musik, die wir hörten. Most of all, I liked the music we listened to. Перш за все, мені сподобалася музика, яку ми слухали.

Decidí seguir mis estudios en el español y me inscribí para el segundo año. Ich beschloss, mein Spanischstudium fortzusetzen und schrieb mich für das zweite Jahr ein. I decided to continue my studies in Spanish and enrolled for the second year. Tuve un maestro diferente el segundo año. I had a different teacher the second year. Todavía fue mucha gramática y vocabulario. Es war immer noch eine Menge Grammatik und Vokabeln. It was still a lot of grammar and vocabulary. Це все ще було багато граматики та лексики. Tuve mucha tarea para la clase. I had a lot of homework for class. Recuerdo distintamente que para cada pregunta en el libro, tuve que copiar la pregunta en español, traducir la pregunta al inglés, responder a la pregunta en español y traducir mi respuesta al inglés. Ich erinnere mich genau daran, dass ich für jede Frage im Buch die Frage auf Spanisch abschreiben, die Frage ins Englische übersetzen, die Frage auf Spanisch beantworten und meine Antwort ins Englische übersetzen musste. I distinctly remember that for each question in the book, I had to copy the question in Spanish, translate the question into English, answer the question in Spanish, and translate my answer into English.

Mientras trabajábamos en las prácticas de gramática y vocabulario, mi maestro, Señor Franklín, sacaba su guitarra y nos cantaba. Während wir Grammatik und Vokabeln übten, holte mein Lehrer, Señor Franklin, seine Gitarre heraus und sang für uns. While we were working on the grammar and vocabulary practices, my teacher, Mr. Franklín, would take out his guitar and sing to us. Le gustaba mucho cantar las canciones de los Eagles, como Desperado. Er liebte es, Eagles-Songs zu singen, wie zum Beispiel Desperado. He really liked singing Eagles songs, like Desperado. Він любив співати пісні Eagles, наприклад, Desperado. Durante mi segundo año del español, fui con el coro a Nueva York. During my second year of Spanish, I went with the choir to New York. На другому курсі іспанської мови я поїхала з хором до Нью-Йорка. Allá tuve una experiencia que me impactó. Ich habe dort eine Erfahrung gemacht, die mich sehr geprägt hat. There I had an experience that impacted me. Там я отримав досвід, який вплинув на мене. Wir hatten einige ausländische Schüler, aber als ich diese Inseln besuchte, all diese Menschen sah und all diese Sprachen hörte, wurde mir klar, wie groß die Welt ist. We had some foreign students, but by visiting these islands and seeing all those people and hearing all those languages, I realized the size of the world. У нас було кілька іноземних студентів, але відвідавши ці острови, побачивши всіх цих людей і почувши всі ці мови, я зрозумів, наскільки великий світ. Oí varios idiomas y quería ser como ellos. Ich hörte mehrere Sprachen und wollte so sein wie sie. I heard several languages and I wanted to be like them. J'ai entendu plusieurs langues et j'ai voulu être comme eux. Я чула кілька мов і хотіла бути схожою на них. Quería hablar y comprender más que solo el inglés. Ich wollte mehr als nur Englisch sprechen und verstehen. I wanted to speak and understand more than just English.

Había otra muchacha en el coro que estaba en mi clase de español. Es gab noch ein anderes Mädchen im Chor, das in meiner Spanischklasse war. There was another girl in the choir who was in my Spanish class. Ella y yo tratamos de hablar en español para ser “chévere” como los turistas que hablaron otros idiomas. Sie und ich versuchten, Spanisch zu sprechen, um "chévere" zu sein wie die Touristen, die andere Sprachen sprachen. She and I tried to speak in Spanish to be “cool” like the tourists who spoke other languages. Ми з нею намагалися говорити іспанською, щоб бути "шевере", як туристи, які розмовляють іншими мовами. En ese momento, decidí que iba a tomar otro año de español. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt beschloss ich, ein weiteres Jahr Spanisch zu studieren. At that point, I decided that I was going to take another year of Spanish.

En mi tercer año de español, todo el vocabulario y gramática de los primeros dos años empezó a tener sentido en mi mente por una razón: cuentos. In meinem dritten Spanischjahr begannen die Vokabeln und die Grammatik der ersten beiden Jahre in meinem Kopf aus einem Grund Sinn zu machen: Geschichten. In my third year of Spanish, all the vocabulary and grammar from the first two years started to make sense in my mind for one reason: stories. En mi tercer año de español leímos, y leímos mucho. In meinem dritten Spanischjahr haben wir gelesen, und zwar sehr viel. In my third year of Spanish we read, and we read a lot. Leímos cuentos cortos y novelas como una versión simplificado de «Lazarillo de Tormes». Wir lesen Kurzgeschichten und Romane wie z. B. eine vereinfachte Version von "Lazarillo de Tormes". We read short stories and novels like a simplified version of "Lazarillo de Tormes." Nous avons lu des nouvelles et des romans comme une version simplifiée de "Lazarillo de Tormes". Ми читаємо оповідання та романи, наприклад, спрощену версію "Ласарільйо де Тормеса". Cuando leí, comprendí todas las palabras y formaciones de verbos que no había comprendido antes. When I read, I understood all the words and verb formations that I had not understood before. Quand je lisais, je comprenais tous les mots et toutes les formes de verbe que je n'avais pas compris auparavant.

Descubrí un amor por el español. Ich entdeckte meine Liebe zum Spanischen. I discovered a love for Spanish. Я відкрила для себе любов до іспанської мови. Quería estudiar. Wanted to study. Je voulais étudier. Compré discos compactos de Ricky Martin y Shakira (eran los años noventa) y los escuché todo el tiempo, bailando y cantando con ellos. Ich kaufte CDs von Ricky Martin und Shakira (es waren die neunziger Jahre) und hörte sie ständig, tanzte und sang mit. I bought Ricky Martin and Shakira CDs (it was the nineties) and I listened to them all the time, dancing and singing with them. J'ai acheté des CD de Ricky Martin et de Shakira (c'était dans les années 90) et je les écoutais tout le temps, en dansant et en chantant. Tuvimos unos estudiantes extranjeros en la escuela. We had some foreign students in the school. Nous avions quelques étudiants étrangers à l'école. Uno era de España y uno era de Colombia. Einer kam aus Spanien und einer aus Kolumbien. One was from Spain and one was from Colombia. Practiqué mi español con ellos cuando posible y aprendí mucho de esas conversaciones. Ich habe mein Spanisch mit ihnen geübt, wann immer es möglich war, und habe bei diesen Gesprächen viel gelernt. I practiced my Spanish with them when possible and learned a lot from those conversations.

En clase mi cuarto (4th) año, miramos más películas y estudiamos las culturas precolombinas de las Américas. In meiner vierten Klasse sahen wir uns weitere Filme an und beschäftigten uns mit den präkolumbianischen Kulturen Amerikas. In class my fourth (4th) year, we watch more movies and study the pre-Columbian cultures of the Americas. Jugamos Scrabble en español y aprendimos poemas de memoria. We played Scrabble in Spanish and memorized poems. Durante ese año decidí que iba a estudiar el español en la universidad para hacerme maestra. In diesem Jahr beschloss ich, Spanisch an der Universität zu studieren, um Lehrerin zu werden. During that year I decided that I was going to study Spanish at the university to become a teacher.

Cuando tenía dieciocho (18) años, fui a Concordia College en Moorhead, Minnesota para estudiar el español y el teatro. Als ich achtzehn (18) Jahre alt war, ging ich auf das Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, um Spanisch und Theater zu studieren. When I was eighteen (18) years old, I went to Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota to study Spanish and theater. Tomé clases de gramática, literatura, cine y traducción. Ich belegte Kurse in Grammatik, Literatur, Film und Übersetzung. I took grammar, literature, film and translation classes.

En el año dos mil dos (2002) fui a España para pasar un semestre. Im Jahr zweitausendzwei (2002) ging ich für ein Semester nach Spanien. In the year two thousand two (2002) I went to Spain to spend a semester. Asistí a la Universidad de Navarra en Pamplona porque tenía un programa de intercambio con Concordia. Ich besuchte die Universität von Navarra in Pamplona, weil ich ein Austauschprogramm mit Concordia hatte. I attended the University of Navarra in Pamplona because I had an exchange program with Concordia.

Hice muchos amigos en España y tomé clases de literatura, geografía, historia y gramática. Ich fand in Spanien viele Freunde und belegte Kurse in Literatur, Geografie, Geschichte und Grammatik. I made many friends in Spain and took classes in literature, geography, history and grammar. Participé en eventos en la universidad e hice excursiones con mis nuevos amigos. Ich nahm an Veranstaltungen der Universität teil und unternahm Ausflüge mit meinen neuen Freunden. I participated in events at the university and went on excursions with my new friends. Practiqué todo el tiempo y me enamoré del español aún más. I practiced all the time and fell in love with Spanish even more.

Vivir en España fue una gran experiencia. Living in Spain was a great experience. Vivre en Espagne a été une expérience formidable. Viví con una familia encantadora. I lived with a lovely family. La madre de la familia era de Valencia y preparó la mejor paella. Die Mutter der Familie stammte aus Valencia und bereitete die beste Paella zu. The mother of the family was from Valencia and she prepared the best paella. Мати родини була родом з Валенсії і готувала найкращу паелью. El padre vio partidos de fútbol en las noches. Der Vater sah sich abends Fußballspiele an. The father watched football games at night. Батько вечорами дивився футбольні матчі. Me gustó el equipo de Galicia. Ich mochte das Team aus Galicien. I liked the Galician team. Мені сподобалася команда з Галичини. ¡Su portero era muy guapo! Ihr Pförtner war sehr gut aussehend! His doorman was very handsome!

Volví a los Estados Unidos determinada a seguir con el español. Ich kehrte in die Vereinigten Staaten zurück und war entschlossen, Spanisch weiter zu lernen. I returned to the United States determined to continue with Spanish. Tuve profesores excelentes en la universidad que venían de varios países, incluyendo Paraguay, Chile, México, España, Perú y Minnesota. An der Universität hatte ich hervorragende Professoren, die aus verschiedenen Ländern kamen, darunter Paraguay, Chile, Mexiko, Spanien, Peru und Minnesota. I had excellent professors at the university who came from various countries, including Paraguay, Chile, Mexico, Spain, Peru, and Minnesota. Cuando me gradué de la universidad, encontré un trabajo y empecé a enseñar. Als ich mein Studium abgeschlossen hatte, fand ich eine Stelle und begann zu unterrichten. When I graduated from university, I found a job and started teaching.

En dos mil catorce (2014), decidí volver a mis estudios y obtener mi maestría, o posgrado, en la enseñanza del español. Zweitausendvierzehn (2014) beschloss ich, mein Studium fortzusetzen und meinen Master-Abschluss (Postgraduierten-Abschluss) in Spanisch zu machen. In two thousand fourteen (2014), I decided to return to my studies and obtain my master's degree, or postgraduate degree, in teaching Spanish. Mis hijos tenían tres años y dos meses cuando empecé mi primera clase en línea, pero me esforcé y terminé el programa en dos años. Meine Kinder waren drei Jahre und zwei Monate alt, als ich meinen ersten Online-Kurs begann, aber ich habe mich durchgesetzt und das Programm in zwei Jahren abgeschlossen. My children were three years and two months old when I started my first online class, but I worked hard and finished the program in two years. Como parte de mi maestría, pasé dos semanas en clases en Costa Rica. Im Rahmen meines Masterstudiums habe ich zwei Wochen lang in Costa Rica studiert. As part of my master's degree, I spent two weeks in classes in Costa Rica. В рамках магістерської програми я провів два тижні на заняттях у Коста-Ріці. También estudié más de la historia política de Latinoamérica y el cine hispano. Außerdem habe ich mehr über die politische Geschichte Lateinamerikas und das hispanische Kino gelernt. I also studied more about the political history of Latin America and Hispanic cinema. Я також більше вивчав латиноамериканську політичну історію та іспаномовне кіно.

Mi viaje español no se ha acabado. Meine spanische Reise ist noch nicht zu Ende. My Spanish journey is not over. Моя іспанська подорож ще не закінчилася. Sigo estudiando el español todo el tiempo. Ich lerne die ganze Zeit über Spanisch. I keep studying Spanish all the time. Я постійно вивчаю іспанську мову. Escucho a música, miro programas, leo y hablo en español todos los días. Ich höre Musik, sehe Sendungen, lese und spreche jeden Tag Spanisch. I listen to music, watch programs, read and speak in Spanish every day. A veces se me olvidan unas reglas de gramática y necesito investigar y practicar un poco. Manchmal vergesse ich einige Grammatikregeln, und ich muss nachforschen und üben. Sometimes I forget some grammar rules and I need to do some research and practice.

El español ha sido parte de mi vida por veinticinco (25) años ahora. Spanisch ist seit fünfundzwanzig (25) Jahren ein Teil meines Lebens. Spanish has been a part of my life for twenty five (25) years now. Estoy agradecida que empecé mi viaje español y que decidí ser maestra. Ich bin dankbar, dass ich meine Reise in die spanische Sprache angetreten und beschlossen habe, Lehrerin zu werden. I am grateful that I started my Spanish journey and that I decided to be a teacher. No puedo imaginar mi vida de otra manera. Ich kann mir mein Leben nicht mehr anders vorstellen. I can't imagine my life any other way. Hablar el español ha abierto puertas, ha causado amistades que no tendría sin el español. Spanisch zu sprechen hat mir Türen geöffnet und Freundschaften geschlossen, die ich ohne Spanisch nicht hätte. Speaking Spanish has opened doors, has made friends that I wouldn't have without Spanish. Іспанська відкрила мені двері, знайшла друзів, яких у мене не було б без іспанської. Y aprender el español me da la oportunidad de compartir este viaje con ustedes y compartir este deseo de aprender y comunicar con el mundo y estoy agradecida por eso todos los días. Und das Erlernen der spanischen Sprache gibt mir die Möglichkeit, diese Reise mit Ihnen zu teilen und diesen Wunsch, zu lernen und mit der Welt zu kommunizieren, zu teilen, und dafür bin ich jeden Tag dankbar. And learning Spanish gives me the opportunity to share this journey with you and to share this desire to learn and communicate with the world and I am grateful for that every day. А вивчення іспанської мови дає мені можливість розділити цю подорож з вами і розділити це бажання вчитися і спілкуватися зі світом, і я вдячна за це кожен день.
