Evangelium secundum Ioannem, Caput 19

Caput 19

Propterea qui me tradidit tibi, majus peccatum habet.

Caput 19 Kapitel 19 Chapter 19

1 Tunc ergo apprehendit Pilatus Jesum, et flagellavit. 1 Then Pilate took Jesus and scourged. 2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and a purple robe. And the soldiers wove a crown out of thorns and placed it on his head, and clothed him in a purple cloak, 3 Et veniebant ad eum, et dicebant : Ave, rex Judæorum : et dabant ei alapas. 4 Exivit ergo iterum Pilatus foras, et dicit eis : Ecce adduco vobis eum foras, ut cognoscatis quia nullam invenio in eo causam. 4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and said, Behold, I bring him out, to know that I find in him. Once more Pilate went out and said to them, "Look, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may know that I find no guilt in him. 5 (Exivit ergo Jesus portans coronam spineam, et purpureum vestimentum.) 5 (Then Jesus went out bearing a crown of thorns and a purple garment.) So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple cloak. Et dicit eis : Ecce homo. And he says to them: Behold a man. And he said to them, "Behold, the man! Pilate says to them: Take him yourselves, and crucify him: for I find no reason in him. Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and crucify him. I find no guilt in him.

7 Responderunt ei Judæi : Nos legem habemus, et secundum legem debet mori, quia Filium Dei se fecit. 7 The Jews answered him: We have a law, and according to the law he must die, because he made himself the Son of God. 8 Cum ergo audisset Pilatus hunc sermonem, magis timuit. 8 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he feared. Now when Pilate heard this statement, he became even more afraid, 9 Et ingressus est prætorium iterum : et dixit ad Jesum : Unde es tu ? 9 He entered his headquarters again and asked Jesus, where are you? and went back into the praetorium and said to Jesus, "Where are you from? Jesus autem responsum non dedit ei. 10 Dicit ergo ei Pilatus : Mihi non loqueris ? 10 Then Pilate says to him: Do you not speak to me? nescis quia potestatem habeo crucifigere te, et potestatem habeo dimittere te ? do you not know that I have power to crucify you, and I have power to release you? 11 Respondit Jesus : Non haberes potestatem adversum me ullam, nisi tibi datum esset desuper. Propterea qui me tradidit tibi, majus peccatum habet. Therefore, it has given me a greater sin. For this reason, the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin. 12 Et exinde quærebat Pilatus dimittere eum. 12 And thenceforth Pilate sought to release him. But the Jews cried out, saying: If you let this man go, you are not Caesar's friend. For everyone who makes himself a king contradicts Caesar. Everyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar.

13 Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down on a bench at a place called Pavement, but in Hebrew. 14 was the preparation of Passover, at about noon, and the Jews, Behold your King. 15 Illi autem clamabant : Tolle, tolle, crucifige eum. 15 But they cried out, Take him away. Dicit eis Pilatus : Regem vestrum crucifigam ? Responderunt pontifices : Non habemus regem, nisi Cæsarem. 16 Tunc ergo tradidit eis illum ut crucifigeretur. 16 Then he handed him over to them to be crucified.

17 And flattering himself with the cross, he went out to it, which is called the place of Calvary, but in Hebrew Golgotha: 18 where they crucified him, and with him two others on this side and on this side, but Jesus in the middle. 17 and carrying the cross himself he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle. 19 Pilate also wrote the title and placed it on the cross. Erat autem scriptum : Jesus Nazarenus, Rex Judæorum. And it was written: Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews. It read, "Jesus the Nazorean, the King of the Jews. 20 Hunc ergo titulum multi Judæorum legerunt : quia prope civitatem erat locus, ubi crucifixus est Jesus, et erat scriptum hebraice, græce, et latine. 20 Therefore many of the Jews: for the city, near the place where Jesus was crucified, and it was written in Hebrew, Latin and Greek. 20 Now many of the Jews read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek. 21 Dicebant ergo Pilato pontifices Judæorum : Noli scribere : Rex Judæorum : sed quia ipse dixit : Rex sum Judæorum. 21 Jews said to Pilate, Write not, King of the Jews, 'but he said, King of the Jews. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write 'The King of the Jews,' but that he said, 'I am the King of the Jews. 22 Respondit Pilatus : Quod scripsi, scripsi. 22 Pilate answered: What I wrote, I wrote. 23 soldiers crucified Jesus, took his garments (and made four parts, to every soldier a part) and a coat. Now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout the whole. 24 They said to one another, not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it is. In order to fulfill the Scripture, said, They parted my garments among them and for my clothing they cast lots. Et milites quidem hæc fecerunt. The soldiers did.

27 Deinde dicit discipulo : Ecce mater tua. 27 Then he says to the disciple: Behold your mother. And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. And from that hour the disciple took her into his home./ Et ex illa hora discipulus accepit eam in sua (casa). 28 Postea sciens Jesus quia omnia consummata sunt, ut consummaretur Scriptura, dixit : Sitio. 28 Afterwards Jesus, knowing that all things were finished, that the Scripture might be finished, said: I am hungry. 29 Vas ergo erat positum aceto plenum. 29 vessel was set full of vinegar. Illi autem spongiam plenam aceto, hyssopo circumponentes, obtulerunt ori ejus. A sponge full of vinegar and hyssop, put it to his lips. So they put a sponge soaked in wine on a sprig of hyssop and put it up to his mouth. He bowed his head.

31 The Jews therefore (since it was a holy day) so that their bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that was a great day on the Sabbath), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Now since it was preparation day, in order that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, for the sabbath day of that week was a solemn one, the Jews asked Pilate that their legs be broken and they be taken down. 32 Venerunt ergo milites : et primi quidem fregerunt crura, et alterius, qui crucifixus est cum eo. 32 Then the soldiers came and broke the legs, and the other who was crucified with him. 33 And when they came to Jesus, when they saw him already dead, they did not break his legs, 34 but one of the soldiers opened his side with a lance, and immediately blood and water came out. 35 And they saw the witness and his testimony is true. And he knows that the truth, that you may believe. For this happened so that the scripture passage might be fulfilled: "Not a bone of it will be broken. 37 Et iterum alia Scriptura dicit : Videbunt in quem transfixerunt. 37 And again another scripture says: They will look on him whom they pierced.

38 After this, Joseph of Arimathea, secretly a disciple of Jesus for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate if he could remove the body of Jesus. Et permisit Pilatus. And Pilate permitted it. So he came and took the body of Jesus. 39 And Nicodemus also came, who had come to Jesus first at night, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. 41 Now there was a garden in the place where he was crucified: and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had yet been placed. 42 There, then, because of the prescenium of the Jews, because it was near the tomb, they placed Jesus there.
