Hello, I'm Justine. Today I'm going to
tell you a story about the day that my
horse fell into a big hole. My horse
Wilf, his name is Wilf, he fell down
into a big hole. And I'm going to tell
you how we got him out of the hole.
First, I need to explain
about the hole.
We had this little shed. This is a shed.
A shed is a small building.
The shed was covering the hole. The big
hole was inside the shed.
The hole had equipment in the bottom.
The hole had some stuff in the bottom of
the hole. [snorts] There was some
equipment in the bottom of the hole.
This is because the equipment was for
pumping water.
On our farm, we had water in a well.
A well is a long hole,
but it's a small hole. This is the long
well.
It was very deep, but there was water in
the bottom of the hole. So there was
some equipment that would pump the water
up
the hole and then the water would go to
our house. The water would get pumped up
this deep hole and over to our house.
So that's why the hole was there.
But one day I was in the house and there
was no water.
There was no water coming out of the tap
in the house. So I walked over to the
shed.
I walked
over to the shed to look
to look at
the hole. I needed to look
at the equipment down in the hole to see
why there was no water.
Why is there no water?
But when I looked in the hole at the
equipment, what did I see? I saw
my horse.
My horse was in the big hole.
[laughter]
This is my horse, Wilf
Wilf was down in the hole. This is my
horse, Wilf. Wilf fell down into this
big hole.
You can see the equipment
that is for our water. Wilf broke the
equipment. But Wilf was okay.
He was just standing
in the hole
waiting for help. He was not scared.
He was just standing there.
He was probably in shock. In shock. When
something is very scary, your body stays
very still so that you don't get hurt.
So, Wilf was probably in shock.
Wilf also broke this ladder.
This ladder was attached to the side of
the hole so that humans could climb down
the ladder to work on the equipment. But
the ladder was broken.
You can also see pieces of wood. There
are pieces of wood here.
That's because Wil broke the cover that
we had on the hole.
This is the hole.
And this is the door. So, Wilf the horse
went in the door and fell in the hole.
[snorts]
We did have a cover on the hole. The
hole was covered by a piece of wood. And
the wood had a door in it so that humans
could climb down the ladder.
Humans could go down the ladder. That
was going down the side of the hole. So,
there was a little door, a little door
for humans to open and close. And then
this was a big
wooden
cover that was on top of the hole.
But when Wilf went through the door, a
horse is very heavy. A horse is very big
and heavy. and Wilf broke
this wooden cover and fell down the
hole.
So, we had to move the shed.
Of course, it happened at sunset. It was
almost dark. There was not very much
sun.
So the picture is dark. So in order to
get Wilf out of the hole, we needed some
big machinery,
but we needed to move the shed. This is
the shed.
This is the hole right here.
So we needed to take the shed off.
We used this big machine. This big
machine is called a loader.
It looks like this.
The loader has big arms and a big
bucket.
A big bucket for lifting.
And it's very strong. So, we used the
loader to move the shed. We moved the
shed
off of the hole.
This is my dad and this is my mom. They
came to help.
Now, the hole is open and the horse is
still down in this hole. Wilf is in the
hole.
This is everybody who came to help. And
everybody is looking down into the hole.
They are looking at Wilf in the hole.
This is my mom.
This is my husband, Kvy.
This is my neighbor, Chad. This is my
dad. And this is my other neighbor,
Marcel.
Chad and Marcel came to help us.
Everybody is looking down in the big
hole.
And Marcel is holding a long strap. He
is holding a strap. I'll show you why in
the next picture.
This is how we decided to get Wilf out
of the hole.
Marcel
climbed down the ladder. The ladder
right here.
We put another ladder in the hole. So
Marcel climbed down this other ladder
and he tied this strap
around Wilf's belly.
He tied the strap
around Wilf's belly here and here so that
there was two straps around Wilf.
Marcel is standing
on Wilf's back.
Marcel
stood on Wilf's back and put the straps
around Wilf's belly.
Then we attached the straps
to the loader. We attached the straps to
the machine and we used the machine to
lift Wilf out of the well. We use the big
arms on the machine on the strong
machine and we use the straps to slowly
lift Wilf out of the hole. Here the
machine
there's the light from the machine and
you can see it's very dark but you can
see the machine is here and the arms are
here and the bucket is here
and we are going to attach the straps to
the bucket but the picture is very dark.
We're going to attach the straps to the
machine
and then lift the arms of the machine
and lift Wilf.
I don't have any pictures of lifting
Wilf because we were all paying close
attention. We were watching very
closely.
But this is what the hole looked like
when we were done.
All of the equipment from our well pump
is broken and this tank is knocked over.
It's sideways.
But Wilf was okay.
We all looked at Wilf in [snorts] the
dark and we could not find anything
wrong with Wilf. There was no broken
bones. There was no big cuts.
And Wilf seemed fine. There was no
problems with Wilf, but it was dark, so
we couldn't see very well.
The next day, we went out to look at
Wilf, and Wilf is fine. Wilf is happy.
[sighs]
I looked closely at Wilf, and he had a
little scratch beside his eye. He must
have scraped his head on something hard
when he fell.
But there was a little scratch beside
his eye and a little scratch on his
cheek
and a little scratch on his leg. This is
Wilf's leg.
And he had a little scratch on his nose.
He had some blood
and some injury on his nose, but he was
okay. And now he's looking at this hole,
and now he knows, don't go close to that
hole. [laughter]
Then later we put the shed back on the
hole and we put a stronger cover on top.
We put a much stronger cover on top of
the hole.
And that is the story of how my horse
Wilf fell down a big hole and how we got
