Once upon a time, a long time ago, there lived a grandfather and a grandmother.

The grandfather went to the mountain to mow his shibachi, and the grandmother went to the river to wash her clothes.
すると 、 大きな 桃 が 流れて きました 。

Then, a big peach washed up on the river.
「 なんと 大きな 桃 じゃ ろう !

What a big peach!
家 に 持って 帰ろう 。」
いえ||もって|かえろう
Let's take it home.
と おばあ さん は 背中 に 担いで 帰えて いきました 。

She carried it on her back and went home.
桃 を 切ろう と する と 、 桃 から 大きな 赤ん坊 が 出て きた 。
もも||きろう||||もも||おおきな|あかんぼう||でて|
As she was about to cut the peach, a big baby came out of it.
「 おっと たまげた 。」
"Oh, my goodness!"
二人 は 驚いた けれども 、 とても 幸せでした 。

They were surprised, but very happy.
「 何という 名前 に しましょう か 。」

What shall we name him?
「 桃 から 生まれた から 、 桃 太郎 と いう の は どう だろう 。」

How about Momotaro, since he was born from a peach?
「 それ が いい 。」

桃 太郎 は あっと言う間 に 大きく なり 、 立派な 優しい 男の子 に なりました 。

「 鬼ケ島 に 悪い 鬼 が 住んで いる と 聞きました 。」

"I heard that a bad ogre lives on Onigashima."
「 時々 村 に 来て 悪い こと を する ので みんな 困って いる 。」
ときどき|むら||きて|わるい||||||こまって|
"Sometimes he comes to our village and does bad things, so we are all in trouble,"
と お じいさん が 言いました 。

The grandfather said.
「 それでは 私 が 行って 退治 しましょう 。

"Then I will go there and exterminate it.
お かあさん 、 きび 団子 を 作って 下さい 。」

おばあ さん は とても おいしい 日本 一 の きび 団子 を 作りました 。

桃 太郎 は 腰 の 袋 に 入れる と さっそく 鬼ケ島 に 向けて 旅立ちました 。

Momotaro put them in the bag on his waist and set off for Onigashima.
途中 、 桃 太郎 は 犬 に 会いました 。

On the way, Momotaro met a dog.
「 桃 太郎 さん 、 袋 の 中 に 何 が 入って いる だい 。」

Momotaro gave the dog a dumpling and the dog became his servant.
桃 太郎 と 犬 が 歩いて 行く と 、 猿 が やってきました 。

As Momotaro and the dog walked along, a monkey came along.
「 桃 太郎 さん 、 袋 の 中 に 何 が 入って いる ん だい 。」

Pheasant received a dumpling from Momotaro and became his retainer.
しばらく 行く と 鬼ケ島 が 見えて きました 。

After a while, the island of Onigashima came into sight.
「 あれ が 鬼ケ島 に 違いない 。」

"That must be Onikeshima."
犬 が 吠えました 。

The dog barked.
鬼ケ島 に 着く と 、 お 城 の 門 の 前 に 、 大きな 鬼 が 立って いました 。

When they arrived at the island, they found a big ogre standing in front of the castle gate.
桃 太郎 は 大きな 石 を つかむ と 鬼 に 向かって 投げました 。

Momotaro grabbed a big stone and threw it at the ogre.
猿 は 門 に 登り 鍵 を 開けました 。
さる||もん||のぼり|かぎ||あけました
Monkey climbed up to the gate and unlocked it.
キジ は 鬼 の 目 を つつきました 。

The pheasant poked the demon in the eye.
「 これ は 参った 。」

"Oh, no!"
鬼 は 逃げて いきました 。

The demon ran away.
「 助けて くれ ~!」
たすけて|
Help me!
と お 城 から 沢山の 鬼 が 出て ききました 。
||しろ||たくさんの|おに||でて|
And many ogres came out from the castle.
ついに 大きな 鬼 が 出て ききました 。

Finally, a big demon came out.
「 生意気な 小僧 。
なまいきな|こぞう
I'm going to teach you a lesson.
俺 様 が 懲らしめて やる 。」
おれ|さま||こらしめて|
I will teach you a lesson.
大きな 鉄棒 を 振り回し ながら 言いました 。
おおきな|てつぼう||ふりまわし||いいました
He said while swinging a big iron bar.
「 あなた が かしら です か 。」
"Are you the one?"
と 言う と 桃 太郎 は すばやく 鉄棒 の 上 に 飛び乗りました 。

said Momotaro, and he quickly jumped onto the bars.
「 悪い 鬼 、 村人 に 悪い こと を した からに は 許せない 。

"I can't forgive the bad ogre for what he did to the villagers.
私 の こぶし を 受けて みろ 。」
わたくし||||うけて|
Take my fist."
「 アイタタタタタ 、 ごめん 、 ごめん 。
"Aita-ta-ta-ta! I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
許して くれ 。
ゆるして|
Let me go.
降参 だ 。」

「 本当に 約束 する か 。」

"Do you really promise?"
「 約束 する 。

"I promise.
嘘 は つきません 。

I'm not lying.
宝物 は 優し いい 上げます 。」

I will return your treasures graciously."
桃 太郎 は お 城 の 金 や 銀 や 織物 や 、 荷車 一 杯 の 宝物 を 手 に 入れました 。

Momotaro got the gold, silver, textiles, and a cart-load of treasure from the castle.
こうして 、 桃 太郎 は お じいさん と おばあ さん の 待つ 家 に 帰り 、 みんな で 幸せに くらしました 。
