When the book Asia Against the West was published in 1356, it received a lot of attention from intellectuals and, of course, Iqbal revolutionaries.
Because the hot topic of those days was the discussion of Westernization and the West's fault for Iran's backwardness and the pathology of the West's thinking, and the late Shaygan, under the influence of the ideas of Henry Karbon and Ahmed Fardid, tried to address these issues in this book.
Although Shaygan later and in an important work such as New Enchantment found a gentler and conciliatory view with Western thought and discussed a concept called cultural and identity intermingling, but in this book we witness a conflict between Western thought and civilization and ancient Asian civilizations. Are.
A struggle that does not lead to the rejection and excommunication of Western thought, but contains a critical view influenced by Nietzsche and Dostoyevsky and critical thinkers of modernity.
It may be thought that dealing with a book that was written forty-four years ago in the atmosphere of Iranian society has no place for Arabs.
How could a writer who lived in this society four decades before us have an idea of the future, in a society where the next generation has a kind of lack of understanding compared to the previous generation.
Although the late Shaygan admitted that this book has become subject to the passage of time and some of its issues are not relevant now, but in my opinion, many of the issues discussed in this book are better and more tangible for us today.
Raising issues such as the lack of identity that is our identity today, or the emergence and expansion of a mass and fragmented society in Iran, or the acceptance of Western culture without any analysis, are issues that can be raised and questioned even today, which was my first reason for writing this book.
My next reason for addressing this book is the late Shaygan himself.
Unfortunately, the treatment of such thinkers has been negative or servile.
Usually, we see that instead of having a dialogue with the author and a fundamental criticism of the work, the author and the work are either attacked or accepted without any analysis and bigotry.
Criticism, which is more similar to obscenity, is a problem that Shaygan also mentioned in this book, this criticism closes the way to the beginning of any dialogue that results in the growth of people and the author.
Dramatic reviews that are accompanied by words like garbage are more like personal opinions and attacks on the work than serious and constructive criticism.
The book Asia vs. the West was not without its share of these criticisms and of course unwarranted worships, and perhaps one of the reasons that caused Shaygan to pass the concepts that he raised in this book more quickly is the misunderstanding and unnecessary praise that has been given to the book.
But the third reason for me to discuss this book is personal. I first read the book Asia vs. the West about eight years ago at the suggestion of one of my friends. At that time, I was researching about the perfect human being in various religions and cultures.
Although Asia compared to the West has references to the perfect human being, especially in Asian cultures, the impact of the book on me was more than these. When I picked up the book for the podcast, I realized the interest I found in the contemporary history of Iran, sociology and philosophy, and the interest I had in Writers such as Dostoyevsky, Camus and Nietzsche were created in me under the influence of this book.
In my opinion, the main concern of Shaygan in this book is to show the confusion of the intellectuals and thinkers of Asian societies, the confusion that was caused by the confrontation of Asian civilizations with Western civilization, this confusion caused Asian civilizations to fall into neither this nor that, in the sense that these societies They are neither related to their past spiritual heritage, nor are they blessed with western thinking.
Part of this confusion is due to not knowing the Western thought and part is due to the separation of Asian civilizations from their traditions.
Shaygan believes that Asian civilizations have passed the stage of encountering a more advanced civilization and the resulting astonishment that was evident in Abbas Mirza and accepted that they should go the way of Western civilization, but at the same time they do not want to lose their ancient cultural heritage and identity.
The reason why Asian civilizations were able to maintain their identity even after being defeated by another Asian civilization is that Asian civilizations generally had common roots and their beliefs did not differ much from each other, for this reason the mixing of these civilizations did not cause much of a problem, but Western thinking is not like that. And in general, it is placed in the direction of negating all this cultural heritage, which makes it impossible to mix cultures.
Asian civilizations are delusional that they can benefit from the gifts of Western thought and technology and preserve their cultural and ethnic heritage.
Proponents of this illusion call it double illusion.
Shaygan says that in these societies, because neither western thought is properly known nor is there accurate information about cultural heritage, it is impossible to prevent the effects of western thought on cultural heritage.
But the Asian civilizations do not know that such a thing is not practically possible, and they are also ignorant of this fact, as a result, they are caught in a double illusion.
A double illusion that takes two forms: westernization and alienation from oneself.
Shaygan says that those who had this illusion and thought that by importing western technology they could benefit from the gifts of western civilization and preserve their ethnic identity, finally realized that one of the two must be sacrificed, that generally this heritage and It was the memory of a nation that was lost.
Shaygan admits that Gandhi failed and India will have no choice but to introduce modernity, Japanese cultural schizophrenia is not possible in the long run.
India's defeat and China's victory changed the fate of Asian civilizations, in the sense that there is no escape from modernity.
So what to do? Shaygan's suggestion is to know one's own place in history, this is possible with accurate knowledge of cultural heritage and proper knowledge of western thought.
When these two are known correctly, then one can decide which path to choose, or at least one can consciously step in the chosen path.
For this reason, the book of Asia against the West is divided into two general parts, the first part is entitled nihilism and its impact on the historical fate of Asian civilizations, is dedicated to the pathology and identification of Western thought and nihilism, and the second part is entitled the position of Asian civilizations against the course of development. Western thought examines the four great Asian civilizations and tries to get a general view of them and express their points of commonality and their differences with Western thought.
When Nietzsche announced the death of God at the end of the 19th century and announced the age of nihilism, and when Dostoyevsky took his blade of attack towards the nihilists and saw the way out of meaninglessness as a return to religion, perhaps few people thought that nihilism would affect all aspects of our lives. to include
The important thing about nihilism is that we in Asian societies were exposed to it without being involved in the emergence of this phenomenon, and according to the late Shaygan, we are losing our spiritual heritage or in other words, our identity.
Of course, in a sense, nihilism also existed in the East, but the difference between Eastern nihilism and Western nihilism is that it exists mostly in Eastern mysticism, and negation means the destruction of everything, even human existence, on the way to reach the origin and God.
Nihilism was the product of a dual view of the origin, a duality that arose in the course of Western thought with the confrontation between Christianity and Greekness and caused the dynamism of Western thought.
Christian thinkers were trying to make a connection between Christian beliefs about the origin and the intellectual heritage that was inherited from Greece, which resulted in the worldization of the origin and God, which occurred in the first step with the gradual demythologizing of the phenomena.
As a result of these actions, values gradually turned into anti-values until Nietzsche interpreted it as the death of God.
Nietzsche regarded Socrates as the initiator of the downward course of Western thought, because Socrates believed that any truth can be obtained through rational methods, and in this way, the world of myth was destroyed and human thought was gradually replaced by divine revelation.
