1 Ut ergo cognovit Iesus quia audierunt pharisaei quia Iesus plures discipulos facit et baptizat quam Ioannes 2 (quamquam Jesus non baptizaret, sed discipuli ejus), 3 reliquit Judæam, et abiit iterum in Galilæam. 1 When, therefore, Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus makes and baptizes more disciples than John 2 (though Jesus did not baptize, but his disciples), 3 He left Judea, and went again into Galilee. 1 Cuando Jesús supo, pues, que los fariseos habían oído que Jesús hacía y bautizaba más discípulos que Juan 2 (aunque no bautizaba Jesús, sino sus discípulos), 3 salió de Judea y se fue de nuevo a Galilea. Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John 4 Oportebat autem eum transire per Samariam. 4 He needed to go through Samaria.

5 Venit ergo in civitatem Samariæ, quæ dicitur Sichar, juxta prædium quod dedit Jacob Joseph filio suo. 5 came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Erat autem ibi fons Jacob. 6 Now Jacob's spring was there. Jesus ergo fatigatus ex itinere, sedebat sic supra fontem. Jesus therefore, being weary from his journey, sat thus above the spring. Hora erat quasi sexta. It was about noon. 7 Venit mulier de Samaria haurire aquam. 7 A woman came from Samaria to draw water. Dicit ei Jesus : Da mihi bibere. Jesus said to him: Give me to drink. 8 (Discipuli enim ejus abierant in civitatem ut cibos emerent.) 8 (For his disciples had gone into the city to buy food.) 9 Dicit ergo ei mulier illa Samaritana : Quomodo tu, Judæus cum sis, bibere a me poscis, quæ sum mulier Samaritana ? 9 Then the Samaritan woman said to him: How can you, being a Jew, ask me to drink, since I am a Samaritan woman? non enim coutuntur Judæi Samaritanis. for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. 10 Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei : Si scires donum Dei, et quis est qui dicit tibi : Da mihi bibere, tu forsitan petisses ab eo, et dedisset tibi aquam vivam. 10 Jesus answered and said to her: If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee: Give me to drink, perhaps you would have asked of him, and he would have given you living water. 10 Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God and who is saying to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him and he would have given you living water. 11 Dicit ei mulier : Domine, neque in quo haurias habes, et puteus altus est : unde ergo habes aquam vivam ? 11 The woman said to him: Lord, you have no where to draw water, and the well is deep: where then do you get living water? The woman said to him, "Sir, you do not even have a bucket and the cistern is deep; where then can you get this living water? 12 Numquid tu major es patre nostro Jacob, qui dedit nobis puteum, et ipse ex eo bibit, et filii ejus, et pecora ejus ? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us a well, and he drank from it, and his sons and his cattle? 13 Respondit Jesus, et dixit ei : Omnis qui bibit ex aqua hac, sitiet iterum ; qui autem biberit ex aqua quam ego dabo ei, non sitiet in æternum : 14 sed aqua quam ego dabo ei, fiet in eo fons aquæ salientis in vitam æternam. Jesus answered and said to him: Whosoever shall drink of this water shall thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never thirst. 14 But the water that I will give him will become a fountain of water springing up to life eternal. 15 Dicit ad eum mulier : Domine, da mihi hanc aquam, ut non sitiam, neque veniam huc haurire. 15 The woman said to him: Lord, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw water. 16 Dicit ei Jesus : Vade, voca virum tuum, et veni huc. 16 Jesus said to him: Go, call your husband and come here. 17 Respondit mulier, et dixit : Non habeo virum. 17 The woman answered and said: I have no husband. Dicit ei Jesus : Bene dixisti, quia non habeo virum ; 18 quinque enim viros habuisti, et nunc, quem habes, non est tuus vir : hoc vere dixisti. Jesus says to him: You have said well, because I have no husband; 18 For you have had five husbands, and now the one you have is not your husband: you have truly said this. Jesus answered her, "You are right in saying, 'I do not have a husband.' 18 For you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true." 19 Dicit ei mulier : Domine, video quia propheta es tu. 19 The woman said to him: Lord, I see that you are a prophet. 20 Patres nostri in monte hoc adoraverunt, et vos dicitis, quia Jerosolymis est locus ubi adorare oportet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you say that Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain; but you people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem. 21 Dicit ei Jesus : Mulier, crede mihi, quia venit hora, quando neque in monte hoc, neque in Jerosolymis adorabitis Patrem. 21 Jesus said to her: Woman, believe me, for the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 Vos adoratis quod nescitis : nos adoramus quod scimus, quia salus ex Judæis est. 22 You worship what you know not; we worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews. 23 Sed venit hora, et nunc est, quando veri adoratores adorabunt Patrem in spiritu et veritate. 23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. Nam et Pater tales quærit, qui adorent eum. For the Father also seeks such as those to worship him. and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him. 24 Spiritus est Deus : et eos qui adorant eum, in spiritu et veritate oportet adorare. 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship him must worship in Spirit and truth. 25 Dicit ei mulier : Scio quia Messias venit (qui dicitur Christus) : cum ergo venerit ille, nobis annuntiabit omnia. 25 The woman said to him: I know that the Messiah (who is called Christ) is coming: therefore when he comes, he will tell us everything. 26 Dicit ei Jesus : Ego sum, qui loquor tecum. 26 Jesus said to her, "I am he, the one who is speaking with you. 27 Et continuo venerunt discipuli ejus, et mirabantur quia cum muliere loquebatur. 27 And immediately his disciples came, and were amazed that he was talking with a woman. Nemo tamen dixit : Quid quæris ? but still no one said, "What are you looking for aut, Quid loqueris cum ea ? or, What are you talking about with her? / or "Why are you talking with her?" 28 Reliquit ergo hydriam suam mulier, et abiit in civitatem, et dicit illis hominibus : 29 Venite, et videte hominem qui dixit mihi omnia quæcumque feci : numquid ipse est Christus ? 28 The woman therefore left her pitcher, and went into the city, and said to those men: 29 Come, and see the man who told me all things that I have done: is he not the Christ? 30 Exierunt ergo de civitate et veniebant ad eum. 30 So they went out of the city and came to him. 31 Interea rogabant eum discipuli, dicentes : Rabbi, manduca. 31 Meanwhile the disciples begged him, saying: Rabbi, eat. 32 Ille autem dicit eis : Ego cibum habeo manducare, quem vos nescitis. 32 But he says to them: I have meat to eat, which you know not. 33 Dicebant ergo discipuli ad invicem : Numquid aliquis attulit ei manducare ? 33 Then the disciples said to one another: Has anyone brought him something to eat? So the disciples said to one another, "Could someone have brought him something to eat?" 34 Dicit eis Jesus : Meus cibus est ut faciam voluntatem ejus qui misit me, ut perficiam opus ejus. 34 Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to finish his work. 35 Nonne vos dicitis, 'Adhuc quatuor menses sunt, et messis venit ?' 35 Do you not say, 'In four months the harvest will be here'? Ecce dico vobis : levate oculos vestros, et videte regiones, quia albæ sunt jam ad messem. Behold, I say unto you: lift up your eyes, and see the regions, for they are already white for the harvest. / I tell you, look up and see the fields ripe for the harvest. 36 Et qui metit, mercedem accipit, et congregat fructum in vitam æternam : ut et qui seminat, simul gaudeat, et qui metit. 36 And he that reaps receives a reward, and gathers fruit to eternal life, so that both the sower and the reaper may rejoice together. 37 In hoc enim est verbum verum : quia alius est qui seminat, et alius est qui metit. 37 For in this there is a true word: because there is one who sows, and another who reaps. 38 Ego misi vos metere quod vos non laborastis : alii laboraverunt, et vos in labores eorum introistis. 38 I have sent you to reap that which you did not labor: others have labored, and you have entered into their labors. I sent you to reap what you have not worked for; others have done the work, and you are sharing the fruits of their work. 39 Ex civitate autem illa multi crediderunt in eum Samaritanorum, propter verbum mulieris testimonium perhibentis : Quia dixit mihi omnia quæcumque feci. 39 Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me everything I have done." Autem multi Samaritanorum ex civitate illa crediderunt in eum, propter verbum mulieris testimonium perhibentis : Quia dixit mihi omnia quæcumque feci. 40 Cum venissent ergo ad illum Samaritani, rogaverunt eum ut ibi maneret. 40 When the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay there. Et mansit ibi duos dies. And he stayed there two days. 41 Et multo plures crediderunt in eum propter sermonem ejus. 41 And many more believed in him because of his speech. 42 Et mulieri dicebant : Quia jam non propter tuam loquelam credimus : ipsi enim audivimus, et scimus quia hic est vere Salvator mundi. 42 And they said to the woman, We no longer believe because of what you say; for we ourselves (we have heard for ourselves) have heard it and know that this is indeed the Saviour of the world.

43 Post duos autem dies exiit inde, et abiit in Galilæam.44 Ipse enim Jesus testimonium perhibuit, quia propheta in sua patria honorem non habet.45 Cum ergo venisset in Galilæam, exceperunt eum Galilæi, cum omnia vidissent quæ fecerat Jerosolymis in die festo : et ipsi enim venerant ad diem festum.46 Venit ergo iterum in Cana Galilææ, ubi fecit aquam vinum. 43 And after two days he departed thence and went into Galilee. 44 For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. for they had also come to the feast. 46 He came therefore again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. 43 After the two days, he left there for Galilee. 44 For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honour in his native place. 45 When he came into Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, since they had seen all he had done in Jerusalem at the feast; for they themselves had gone to the feast. 46 Then he returned to Cana in Galilee, where he had made the water wine. Et erat quidam regulus, cujus filius infirmabatur Capharnaum.47 Hic cum audisset quia Jesus adveniret a Judæa in Galilæam, abiit ad eum, et rogabat eum ut descenderet, et sanaret filium ejus : incipiebat enim mori.48 Dixit ergo Jesus ad eum : Nisi signa et prodigia videritis, non creditis.49 Dicit ad eum regulus : Domine, descende priusquam moriatur filius meus.50 Dicit ei Jesus : Vade, filius tuus vivit. Now there was a royal official whose son was ill in Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and asked him to come down and heal his son, who was near death. 48 Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will not believe." 49 The royal official said to him, "Sir, come down before my child dies." 50 Jesus said to him, "You may go; your son will live." Credidit homo sermoni quem dixit ei Jesus, et ibat.51 Jam autem eo descendente, servi occurrerunt ei, et nuntiaverunt dicentes quia filius ejus viveret.52 Interrogabat ergo horam ab eis in qua melius habuerit. The man believed what Jesus said to him and left. 51 While he was on his way back, his slaves met him and told him that his boy would live. 52 He asked them when he began to recover. Et dixerunt ei : Quia heri hora septima reliquit eum febris.53 Cognovit ergo pater, quia illa hora erat in qua dixit ei Jesus : Filius tuus vivit ; et credidit ipse et domus ejus tota.54 Hoc iterum secundum signum fecit Jesus, cum venisset a Judæa in Galilæam. They told him, "The fever left him yesterday, about one in the afternoon." 53 The father realized that just at that time Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live," and he and his whole household came to believe. 54 (Now) this was the second sign Jesus did when he came to Galilee from Judea.
